Regardless of the false claims of their owner about the magical powers of the roof early on, for the stadium size, Sporting Park at SKC is the model to follow.

Sporting Park is a great facility, but at 20K isn't it a bit on the big side for a - new - NASL franchise?

OKC will only be in the NASL for 1 season before MLS waives the expansion fee to get us in...

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. I even overheard someone at Skinny Slim's this morning say, "...from what I hear it will only be 4-5 yrs before we get an MLS team.." Really?! Really?

2017 MAPS IV may play into the future of our adding soccer to the OKC sports menu. Why? We learned from MAPS I that we should have spent more money on the indoor sports arena initially. NHL doubted that we could build an arena for under $90 million. We had to invest another $100 million into the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

If the city decides to put some kind of stadium proposal on the ballot, which I'm sure they will do--the invitation for a private-pubic investment has already been laid. I don't see Funks or Lund's group investing $100 million in a stadium alone. I do foresee MAPS IV passing $100 million and getting $50 million in private funding.

This will put us in a position with a stadium approved to eventually get into Major League Soccer who plans to add four teams by 2020. Getting that soccer specific stadium approved in 2017 will put us on the MLS's top priority radar.

When I found out OKC was getting an NASL team I freaked out with excitement. If OKC get's an MLS team...I think I'll ship my pants...

Mr. Warmth, it's a Holiday weekend and my batteries are spent. Is this sarcasm??? Do you really believe just one year? Do you really believe we get an MLS team period???

So... when's the state of Oklahoma gonna create the STARbonds to build this magical facility which the fans will flock to like scissortails?

I agree. I would love some water front property. Right up by the river somewhere. That would be most ideal for people coming from any direction.

If ever Tulsa and Oklahoma City could work together (Oklahoma STARbonds) a mid-way twin stadium baseball/football complex (MLB, NFL, MLS) in Stroud, high speed Turner Turnpike commuter rail would be great with both cities sharing the environment; we know that will never happen (a pipe bomb dream), this state is too cheap to build safe rooms in schools for its students.

The State of Oklahoma has in excess of $500 million in its 'rainy day' fund. It's been raining...

Oklahoma City will eventually get its own SSS facility funded with the MAPS IV 2017 Initative which just may include a public-private partnership investment.

More than likely you are going to see something on the south riverfront like the defunct old downtown airpark property near the Boardman (SW 11th between Western/Exchange) currently owned by former Mayor Kirk Humphreys. There are plans to house an amphitheater-like setting with a stage, tents and the likes, possibly Grant Humphreys' Ferris Wheel. If this doesn't scare all the carp and catfish from the Oklahoma River, nothing will.

He (Humphreys) paid in excess of $7 million for that property and it's probably worth 3-7 times that amount now.

I know some of the Humphrey family. I've talked to them a little bit about this scenario and he (this particular Humphrey) didn't really think that would happen. I'll dig deeper next time I see him and see what else he says.

Basically what he told me was... That particular piece of land was originally bought with the plans for a downtown air park (and yes the ferris wheel is part of the deal). not sure what they'll do with it as of now. He (in his opinion) didn't think that MAPS IV would start by 2017. He doubts that MAPS III will be finished by then. Also, that he would suspect another upgrade addition to the arena to keep the Thunder happy before building a SSS.

I know Craig Humphrey is good friends with Brad Lund so who knows...

There are a number of parcels just south of the river which would be ideal for a development.

Sometime in 2017 is when the current MAPS III sales tax expires; so you want to continue the penny sales tax with the idea that there will be no new taxes.
(MAPS IV (2017) will probably be a big package in the $800-$900 million range (expand canal, commuter rail, fire-police vehicles & equipment, soccer specific stadium...).

You menioned about the arena upgrade; that will be an option. They just may tear down the Cox Convention Center and build a new state-of-the-art NBA style arena on that site (Thunder anchor tenant) and work the Chesapeake Energy Arena into the new convention center-hotel plans.

    That's actually a terrible scenario

That's actually the individual counties & school districts that are too cheap to build them. Stand alone shelters tend to cost about $450/$550 per square foot to meet FEMA 361, depending on if they are above or below ground, like these...

Eufaula Boarding School / Sequoyah Schools

If designed into a new school/building, that cost can be brought down to about $300/SF, like the ones at these buildings,

Idabel Child Development Center / Wilburton Head Start / Broken Bow Head Start / Jones Academy Academic Building

The only thing holding back funding of storm rooms and shelters is that the legislators haven't quite figured out how to enrich themselves and their buddies over building these.

    Those are always the best

    Mr. Warmth?

The state could kick in money to encourage schools to build safe rooms or do we need to have a "MAPS to Save Our Kids (saferooms)?

And cost 3 times what a nice stadium on the bank would costs and require much higher O&M

Could? Possibly. Will? Again, not until they find some corporation to come in and kickback a bunch of money and jack up the construction costs. The current legislature is not about building facilities or infrastructure for ANY thing. They would sell off the state parks if they could get away with it and are willing to let the Capitol building fall apart around them. They are for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on consultants to come up with a redundant school grading system or a couple million on standardized testing that can't communicate with it's cloud server
