    Up in the skyway

I never said anything about elite South Americans because I don't think Dempsey is in that category. No, MLS isn't going to be buying the next Neymar, but for 41 million they could get their hands on players as good as Dempsey. Saying 10 players was going a bit overboard though.

The reason I bring it up is because I've heard it was considerably less.
I think even Socalyid said something to the effect of £50k week in another thread, which works out to around $4M / year.
If that's true, to double one's salary at the age of 30 is no small thing.

Dempsey has to play well in MLS to retain his spot. Donovan was "out of form" and lost his spot within the National Team. It will depend on form, but if Zusi, Landon, FJ, AJ, EJ, Shea, etc. are all playing very well leading up to the World Cup and Dempsey isn't, he could lose his spot.

Klinsmann isn't afraid of making tough decisions. He put his captain into retirement, left off his star striker off a WCQ roster because of a tweet, and left off the best player the country has ever produced from a WCQ roster because he wasn't in good form.

Good as done? Seattle Times article http://seattletimes.com/html/sounders/2021528004_sounders03xml.html.

Well, Clint will get playing time ...

Will the Sounders' contract allow him to pull a post-MLS season, Landon excursion back to Europe???

Some may reasonably question the soccer soundness of the Sounders' sojourn, but perhaps it's also a family decision. ???

We can delete this thread. Dempsey is no longer a "yank abroad'

SO one of our best players comes back to the US to get consistent playing time on a turf field?

This is like looking at a really great screenwriter that writes small, indie dramas compared to a really great screenwriter that writes blockbusters. Dempsey has been in Europe for years, he was on a 22 million 3 year deal at Tottenham and probably wasn't hugely off that when at Fulham. His quote is more, it costs a lot more to get him. I wasn't making a statement about their skills or marketability, I was making a statement about the kind of wages they've been earning over the past 5 years. Dempsey is just worth way more.

People often wonder where Donovan would play upon returning to the full national team. They talk about on the right or left but I noticed klinsmann played him off the striker the entire gold cup. With zusi's growth wide I think logic dictates klinsmann views Donovan as a off the striker, the exact spot Dempsey plays normally. I could see Dempsey not playing abroad puttin a sees of doubt in klinsmann's mind as to who may be best there. Anyways if true will be interesting to see if it hurts his national team chances

The man without a position wasn't able to fill that role? What exactly was his role supposed to be last season?

Facilitate the other attackers and bag a few goals, I would imagine, with more one or the other depending on where he was playing at any given moment. "Man without a position" is just a term, I was trying to say he didn't fit in that well in the attack.

Until there's a picture of Dempsey holding a jersey it's not a done deal. Regardless of how many organizations are reporting it, Tottenham and Seattle haven't said a word.

did anyone "fit in that well" in their attack last year? It seemed like they had players suited to 3 or 4 different styles. I'm just not sure why they'd want to get rid of Dempsey before some of their other forwards/attackers. If Soldado gets hurt, they're screwed.

Not the strikers, which you'll notice I've already called out.

Because he's not part of their plans, why pay him a remaining several millions of dollars to not play very much? If they didn't get a transfer offer near their valuation, I'm sure he would be staying put. Bottom line is they have bigger fish to fry when this Bale money comes in. If Soldado gets hurt they will have to figure something out, I agree, but starting Dempsey up top obviously isn't the answer.

I actually think this is a good thing for the USMNT. Here's why...
    1. At 30 he is the finished product. He's competitive and pushes himself. He's already learned in Europe what he is going to learn.
    2. Less travel on his body for the qualifiers.
    3. At the end of the MLS season , he can rest until February, with the season starting in March. He'll play two month before heading to USMNT camp. He won't enter the WC after the long and grueling european season.
Odds are he will be fresher and be recovered more fully from slight knocks for the WC by moving to Seattle.

I would not mistake Clint as a "world class striker". World class strikers do not have to worry about finding playing time for a CL-wannebe team like the Spurs...

I would just like to point out that several players who had no no significant playing experience outside MLS at the time have done very well at the last few World Cups: Donovan, McBride, Pope

When I first heard the rumor maybe it was denial or whatever but I thought it wasnt possible. Now that it's looking more likely to happen it feels like a kick in the balls to see arguably the best american coming back to the US when he is still in his prime. However I am holding out that it will either fall through or was just a bunch of really ellaborate lies...
Whose to say he's still going to be competitive and push himself? Before I wouldnt have had a doubt. If this move is true and happens, I dont know if Dempsey really cares anymore.

However I do realize that I am coming off as all doom and gloom. Because that is how I currently feel about the situaton.

I have a hard time believing he'd let both clubs off the hook for $3 million a year when it was contractually owed to him. Goff said $4 million a year base salary, but when he publishes MLS player salaries every year there are two categories; base salary and guaranteed compensation. I would expect that 2nd category to at least match the Spurs salary and in that context $8 million sounds plausible, especially if there are performance and team bonuses thrown in.

(What is guaranteed compensation? I assume marketing, endorsements, cut of jersey sales, that type of thing.)

I actually like Donovan, but I think he has limited himself because of his desire to stay in the U.S. His resume is pretty thin from that perspective and I just don't see him getting the kind of money Dempsey is getting (if they $8M/year rumors are true)-- especially if he stays in MLS.

What about Texas? Seriously, I think it's a good move. Even though he will play some games on turf, this may prolong his career, if he wants to, and keep him playing consistently, if he wants to. I'm sure he will be compensated well enough to be able to eat out twice a week. And as ambassadors of American Football go, he brought the bar way up. Who's next? Anyway, enjoy the fruits, bro!

The Sounders pay no rent at CenturyLink. That was a big part of the reason they brought Paul Allen into the ownership group.

At a certain point, we as USMNT fans are going to have to start believing a bit in our league's quality. There is not always a correlation between national team performance at World Cup's and the rankings of the leagues where the rosters play.

Right now the best thing for the development of the game in this country is revenue and the biggest hurdle yet to be crossed is TV money. And if Deuce generates even a little excitement and dollars and is more accessible as an idol for kids...that can only be a good thing. Because it is TV dollars that will be the larger driving force that should ultimately trickle down to player pool expansion at the youngest levels and investment in development...all while the league and minor leagues expand, kids forego college....were seeing it now more and more. Deuce is fiery and driven and, not unlike Robbie Keane, is capable of playing at a high level for both club and country.
