I'm reading that Seattle was the only team willing to pay the 9 million dollar transfer fee. Maybe Clint had other plans, but at the end of the day the Sounders won this one.

It's Joe Roth with the deep pockets but I suspect the club itself is profitable and has cash reserves to draw from for the transfer fee.

    This transfer is weak. Gutted.

You can't better the USMNT with their best players playing in the mls.

    WINNERS:
Seattle - looking like a serious contender
Clint - heaps of playing time, heaps of money, good club atmosphere, what's not to like?
MLS - more people tuning in to check it out, more good players thinking about moving there
USMNT - Dempsey stays sharp with lots of PT, won't need to travel as far for qualifiers

    LOSERS:
Spurs - a better adjusted Dempsey was always going to be improved in year two
The rest of MLS West - *Gulp*
NY Cosmos - return debut might be a bit overshadowed...

For the here and now I think it's a big deal. We don't need the captain of our national team making a move like this going into a WC year. Sure leave Spurs but don't leave Europe all together. Take your talents to Villa, Sunderland, hell anywhere in a Top 4 league but not MLS, not yet. After the World Cup? fine no problem Clint make the move, but don't do it NOW. I wonder if this will have any effect on Clint's standing within the national team, how will Jurgen view this move by Clint?

With that said, beyond 2014 I think it's pretty irrelevant. Clint's on the wrong side of 30 and this just speeds up the process of him being a bit player for the national team during the 2018 cycle. Not a big deal in the long run with Jozy, Aron, Green, Parker, Agudelo, etc. waiting in the wings.

So is this the end of DEUCE in Europe or will he be allowed to go on 2-3month loans each year?

This may be a PLUS for MLS and Dempsey's bank account but it leaves you wondering what if? I mean it would be 1 thing if Dempsey had gone to Spurs last year and scored no goals and was a flop and thus this would be Fantastic but he had a pretty decent season. He was so close to the CL. Want him to achieve that for himself and for fans to watch him in it. I'm not hating on MLS. Props to them. Just wanted to see our best player achieving success with Spurs as he did with Fulham.

    Gutted.

But so far I can keep driving my Mini Marcos, eating my black puddings, and watching Bottom re-runs, I'll be ok.

    Cheers, mates!

Seattle probably came in with a crazy offer (9m USD), and Spurs jumped at it right away. Seattle probably initially offered Dempsey high wages, but no where near as the reported 8m USD per year. Dempsey probably didn't want to leave Tottenham for a slight pay increase. In the end, Seattle probably went for broke and decided to massively overpay Dempsey because they know what he could do for their club. Dempsey at that point could not refuse the amount of money that Seattle was offering.

There aren't exact figures, but Dempsey figures to be one of the 40-50 highest paid players around the world if the 8m USD wages for Dempsey are correct.

$9m was the fee Tottenham paid for Clint.

    So Levy just broke even.

He probably is at the point where accepting $32m (vs losing ~$10m outstanding on his Spurs contract I believe, so a gain of $22m) is good business.

His happiness and family seemed fine in UK.

But with Seattle's big pile of $, plus probably several more sizeable piles of marketing $$$, I suspect Clint's happiness and family will be just fine in Seattle.

Like McBride is? Does that warm us on a winter's night? You only get one career, do what you want with it...the US has never had a player with the drive to climb the ladder like Dempsey (well, now Bradley, maybe Altidore following in his footsteps)...personally, I think he's done more for US soccer players abroad and YA fans than any US player in history.

    He's earned the right

Sure as hell not worth 4 times more than LD. That's assuming he's worth more, which unless you are factoring in merchandise sales and such, not sure how you came to that conclusion.

BTW I'm not saying Clint isn't worth 8 million, more to do with me believing Landon is worth a lot more than the 2 million he's currently on.

Really don't see Dempsey figuring into the USMNT plans past 2014. He will be 35 years old by the time that the 2018 WC comes around. Whether he is playing with Spurs or Seattle at that age, his chances to make the 2018 World Cup aren't likely.

For the 2014 World Cup, this move makes no sense. He could have waited a year. You would like to see your best players playing at a high level before the World Cup, and MLS isn't a high level. If Seattle agreed to loan Dempsey to the EPL once the MLS season ends, then this deal wouldn't be so awful. If Dempsey doesn't get a loan to a better club in a better league than MLS before the World Cup, he could be in for a poor World Cup.

Dempsey took this deal because of the ridiculous salary that he was offered. Having a player like Dempsey in the league helps MLS, but does it help US Soccer? If Dempsey isn't prepared for the World Cup, that could be costly to the USA's chances of advancing out of the group. This is a great move for Seattle, but its a very selfish move by Seattle. This move does not help Dempsey going into the 2014 World Cup. Can't fault Dempsey for taking the deal, Seattle is giving him a crazy amount of money.
