So you want your national team captain sitting on the bench and NOT PLAYING a large percentage of the time in a world cup year? It doesn't matter what flippin' league you're in if you're sitting on the bench!

At his age and salary, there probably just weren't a lot of options that could want him, afford him, and give him the playing time he desires.

If he's getting beckham money plus beckham perks like future ownership then
it is not football any more but fortune building. That is easily more respectable than CL.

Other than having to fight and scrap for minutes on an overcrowded roster, I don't see any negatives. The guy has done his fair share of scrapping and fighting. Maybe it's time for him to take on a new challenge - that of being the main man on a team.

This is what's wrong with people's mentalities, you'd have him playing at Krasnodar over MLS if it was available. Who cares about the other countries, maybe he doesn't want to go to a non-English speaking country? Why is American soccer automatically inferior to these middling clubs?

Big question also: We saw reports of West Brom and Sunderland looking for him, what if Levy didn't want to sell him to another European club without some kind of extortionate deal? It's way too early to tell what the circumstances of this are.

I still think it was simple: I've gone as far as I can go, and I think it's pointless to continue like this. Very Donovan-esque and I like that he can think for himself.

Tottenham and Liverpool were the only teams with a chance considering he wasnt going to a bigger club and any smaller club had no chance at UCL. He also had ton of interest from Champions league teams abroad (mainly in Italy) but didnt want to leave England thus Tottenham was the best choice.

Word is DPs are not subject to allocation, even if they are USMNT players.

Yep. He found he ceiling though, which is good I guess? Maybe he wants to prolong his career in the states instead of sitting on the bench getting disheartened.

Or maybe he wants to play and be a star at a club, and Tottenham weren't selling within the prem. It's a world cup year after all, maybe he just wants to play. Either way, there's no room for him on Spurs to get minutes once the Bale money comes in, that's pretty obvious.

I'm sure they're thrilled to have you! Until they get a little too critical or start to expect too much of US players, that is...

    Debatable.

Check Dempseys stats from last year, he played the majority of the games and was actually a quite important player in a champions league hunt squad. Also with Bale seemingly gone, and we all know how much AVB likes Clint, I absolutely believe the minutes and experience he would gain playing at the highest level is miles better than playing every week against MLS quality opponents

Rogers came out of that looking like an idiot. Liverpool were interested but Tottenham caught them with their pants down. Rogers even had to apologize to the club's supporters for not bringing in a striker and letting Carroll go at the same time.

Don't think that counts as much of a fight, when a single team stays with their lowball of an offer all summer and then someone else swoops in to take a punt in a position of need.

Why would he be getting that? Beckham he ain't.

Are people really saying Clint hit his ceiling at Fulham?

Did any of you guys watch him last year? He was a major contributor to a top 5 team in the best league in the world. How in the world did he not prove himself at Tottenham?

Dempsey must be getting paid like 3-5million and a percentage of jersey sales.

Dempsey might have been sitting on the bench Yes but it's not as if AVB stated that he would never play him or sent him to train with the reserves. Dempsey might have been super-sub all season but that would be better than playing in MLS. Heck he could have moved to a CL club in France or Portugal.

Dempsey rejected both Aston Villa and Sunderland because he wanted to play for a big club and those are confirmed offers that we know about, I'm sure there were others interested. If Spurs made it known that he was available there would undoubtably be interest from other Prem teams.

Edit: Also, I forgot about Liverpool's chase

Prolong his career by playing on one of the worst surfaces in MLS?

Because those top5 leagues outrank MLS. He was getting like 5million a year at Spurs. That would be worth staying there even if he was demoted to just "super-sub". Heck even the Russian league is rated over MLS. what's wrong with that?

Hit his ceiling in terms of being a "star". He contributed to Tottenham, but was mostly a man without a position there. He did his Dempsey thing and bagged some goals by turning up in the right spots, but he'll do that wherever he goes... mostly I saw him as slowing down their attack, back passing, and not being able to fill the role they thought he would be able to fill.

I dislike Spurs and love Dempsey. But stats aren't everything... in a team that struggles to score goals being 3rd highest scorer isn't indicative of a really good season, it only shows that the strikers were rubbish and the team needs to retool the attack.

Which they are doing, with or without the Bale money (probably with).

Was always wondering why Seattle was not a Super Club in MLS. They seem to be doing everything right. This could be a great step forward on there way to being the first MLS club to win the CONCACAF Champion's League and more! Wish Freddy was still there.

On the positive side... if they have the $$$ to buy Deuce, they likely have the $$$ to put in grass...

Big clubs have different standards. I didn't watch enough of Dempsey at Tottenham to have an opinion on his time there, but being "good" isn't necessarily good enough when you're on a team that aspires to compete for a CL spot. I made the analogy with Podolski at Arsenal. By all accounts, he had a respectable first season. Despite that, I doubt anyone would be sad to see him go.

That's part of what you sign up for when you go to a big club. Higher standards, impatient fans, and fierce competition for places.

The Keane analogy is a pretty good one. Two guys who had probably hit their ceiling in Europe and decided to try something fresh. In both cases the player in question is critical to his national team, so he doesn't have to worry about competing for a slot the way a young and unproven player might. Clint will be nice and fresh for the WC in 2014 and that will probably be his last big hurrah as a USA international. Realistically, he's not going to be on the 2018 team as a 35 year old.
