Hi all I hope yall are enjoying this fantastic weather. Did anyone read the news on the sale of the jails in Detroit? How cool would it be if they built a stadium downtown? The last line notes something eccentric and wow factor!! http://www.freep.com/article/201307...-Gilbert-Penobscot-Building-Wayne-County-jail What elese could it be?
The "Wow" factor is intriguing , but not sure soccer would wow people in Detroit right now. I hope I am wrong because I would love a MLS team downtown. Its a great location with the other teams right there and Greektown just to the south. There is no other choice than downtown for a team here. Im not sure how far in advance Garber has expansion plans but Detroit would probably be around the 24th to 28th team. Obviously NYCFC is 20 with 2 or 3 SE teams possible and looking like a another NOR CAL team (SAC/Elk grove) ....
Don Garber does not plan where to put MLS expansion teams. He does not wave a magic wand and bestow teams to deserving cities. He does not plan the order in which cities are awarded franchises. He does not even decide which bidding groups are given expansion teams. If someone in Detroit was willing and demonstrably able to build a stadium, pay the expansion fee and run an MLS team, there would be a team in Detroit tomorrow, regardless of NorCal or Atlanta or Florida.
Fair enough ..... I just don't see detroit being awarded a team in the immediate future, just an opinion. In Garber I meant the brass running the league not specifically himself. I should've made it clearer but please tell me your inside circle of knowledge about how expansion franchises are awarded.
Kudos to the OP. It isn't speculation any more. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/articl...plan-for-mls-stadium-mall-condos-on-jail-site
That would depend on whether or not the DCFC guys can be involved. As much as I hate the thought of Detroit MLS choosing the color red (only because their two natural rivals, Chicago and Toronto, would also be in red), they have done a great job with their red and yellow kits.
Posted on the Twitter Q-A with Don G today: Steve Paljusevic @SteveOGrime 4h @thesoccerdon have you have any talks with groups about a Detroit MLS team after reports came out about downtown stadium? #AskGarber Don Garber @thesoccerdon 3h . @SteveOGrime no https://twitter.com/thesoccerdon/status/361953964431904769
By the way, there was a mention about Detroit during the Columbus Crew broadcast. (The Crew broadcasts on Fox Sports Ohio are aired on FS-Detroit / Plus.) They simply said that any conversation about Detroit "would be a very short conversation" and left it at that.
Are you kidding? We'd love to have you in the league; If I could just pick any city to expand to it'd be Detroit. Hell after Detroit it'd be awesome to have Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Indy, Pittsburgh that would be a dream Midwestern corridor of rivalries to me. Detroit expansion would be a "short conversation" because everyone knows what MLS is focued on right now. They want to get Florida worked out with probably both Miami and Orlando. They have tunnel vision on that just like they did for New York two. Again it'd be great to have more Midwest teams but Detroit just isn't getting in for a while unless your guy rescues the league from Chivas. If Detroit gets in Columbus would have to give up CSA Wolves and I don't even mind that.
What cheap shot? You're that mad that they said it'd be a very short conversation? That wasn't about you or Detroit; they likely would have said the same thing about Sacramento, Indianapolis, or any other city. Right now it's all about Florida Miami and Orlando are the only ones having long conversations right now.
Looks like Detroit or bust now for us. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/articl...jail-project-pact-reviews-redevelopment-plans
