Honest question, but is Compadre Stadium a possibility for next season? We all know that PHX FC won't be playing in Tempe next season, so couldn't they use Compadre Stadium next season instead? Its been abandoned for 15+ years, so wouldn't the city of Chandler be open to the possibility of PHX FC using the stadium? They could probably get a cheap rental rate. Or is it to far South? (the equivalent of playing at the Peoria Sports Complex) Or would it cost to much money to update/renovate? What do y'all think? http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/local/article_dce043b6-4c2e-11e0-9a90-001cc4c002e0.html
I think the biggest issue is it's location, redoing it would cost a lot and there isn't much parking. Wouldn't be that bad if someone was going to start an NPSL or PDL team though.
Too much $ to renovate? - It just need the grass to be mowed and watered. jk : ) This location would be perfect for me because I live in that area, but it's probably too far for most fans. Plus the bleachers are set up for baseball. It would be hard to set the football pitch well in front of the crowd.
The angle of the seating seems more acute than I'm used to as well, I don't know where you would fit the seating so you could see the pitch well.
I didn't know Compadre existed, but I don't think it would work. Mainly b/c it looks to need a lot of work. Making an adequate playing field would be costly, then they'd have to redo the stands, bathrooms, concessions, parking, etc. I just don't know where the money would come from. I doubt Chandler would foot any portion of the bill and I'm guessing the team is going to be conservative with the money they do have. On top of that it lacks access to public transport and I don't remember many bars and restaurants down there either. The stadium problem is going to require a creative solution, but i just don't thinks its worth pouring money into a stadium that is so far out.
Infrastructurally, it has to be a mess. And without knowing who is going to be footing the bills next season, it's hard to determine their expense tolerance. But just because a stadium exists doesn't make it a viable option. It's a shame Compadre (which was once quite a Cactus League jewel) has gone abandoned all these years (if you could reasonably play baseball here outside in the summer, some independent league would have snapped up a stadium like this years ago). If you're going to go baseball, though, hell, I'd go Muni (for one year, depending), Tempe Diablo or (best building) Salt River Fields, even, before I would even start poking around to see the crumbling infrastructure of Compadre. Still think Hoy Stadium is the way to go.
Thanks. I was unaware I was overlooking all the fabulous options. 1 - Grass field, proper size (apparently) 2 - Fairly central location accessible by a known thoroughfare 3 - Sufficient seating for the level of play 4 - Apparent sufficient parking 5 - Apparent press box We are not, as a market, blessed with stadium options. Being a chooser at this point ignores the reality that this is third-division, low budget soccer and a craptacular team that very few people care about.
What about the most important thing... The beer. They typically don't sell alcohol on college campuses.
I wasn't trying to be smart ass as much as I was coming to the realization that all the options are flawed in more than one way. Yeah, beggars can't be choosers, but after ASU, everything is going to be a serious downgrade.
