Don't you just love those weeks where you get to watch 10 hours of MLS in one Saturday? Well, you're in luck:

    And finally:

We post in a thread that has rules. And those rules have to be guarded by men with banning privileges. Who's gonna do it, us? Us, BigSoccer fiends? Mods have a greater responsibility than we can possibly fathom. We weep for Chivas USA and we curse Roy Miller. We have that luxury. We have the luxury of not knowing what Knave knows: That D.C. United's win last week probably saved lives. And Chivas USA's existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to us, saves lives. We don't want the truth. Because deep down in places we don't want to talk about at tailgates, we want mods in this thread, we NEED them in this thread. We use words like: "Se La Perdio", "NNGOOOL", "Strong Strength"...We use these words as the backbone to a thread spent avoiding girlfriends, wives and children. THOMA uses them as a punchline.

In other words: As always keep it friendly and neutral in the PBP thread :D :sneaky:

    Paging all you fanaticos locos.

Can't we wait to post this thread until after DC United loses to New England in the USOC?

You know -- taking one debacle at a time?

Oh, and in how many different ways will Chivas USA disappoint me this week?

    To hell with this season.

I mentioned in the last PBP thread that I'd be kayaking the Mississippi quite soon (Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico), but unfortunately those plans have been pushed back until July 28th (its set in stone now, despite being pretty late in the year to be starting this journey). Should be a nice leisurely ride and I'll get to visit a few cities I haven't spent much time in. Next year I'm doing the inside passage from Olympia, Washington to Muir Glacier, Alaska, which obviously will be a little more difficult ;)

So, hopefully I'll be able to catch as much MLS action as I can during that time but I'm not counting on it...so I'm depending on you guys to give me lots of "lulz" for when I get back and read about what went down.

Surely with a good data plan you should be able to stream MLS games and post here while you make the girlfriend do all the heavy rowing in your kayak....

I hate to jinx anyone's specific team, but here's to hoping that more than one game this weekend pays proper homage to the 20th anniversary reissue of the Digable Planets' magnum opus.

Wimp, real kayakers go the other direction. :D

(Actually that sounds awesome, and you'll love the Inside Passage next year).

What are you guys going to do without the incredible goal-scoring prowess of Rafael, Knave?

I'm sure Dave Kasper will find a replacement that's equally as useless.

Wow. I'd love to do that one day (when I have more money). How much time does the entire journey take?

Depends on your speed and how many hours per day you're on the river, but generally between 70-110 days from Itasca to the gulf. Its a really leisurely journey where the only thing to look out for is boats running you down (this is easily avoidable if you pay attention and are smart) and possibly wake from larger boats swamping you, but that is avoidable too with proper gear and experience. Anyway, its an interesting way to see a good amount of cities/towns in the midwest if you have the time.

Additionally, money isn't nearly as big a factor as you'd think. I know a few people who have done the entire trip for less than $500 (not including kayak, obviously) since they were willing to camp out at night along the bank and eat cheaply. Just have to make sure you don't camp in certain areas that are known to have slight crime problems. Its more of the opportunity cost (missing work) or having time to do it in the first place that poses the problem for most people.

Are there "Gulf of Mexico that way ->" signs along the way when navigating through the lakes in Northern Minnesota? I imagine it's easy to get lost in all the interconnected lakes.

Haha, this first part made me laugh a little bit :D

There are one set of mile markers starting at Itasca going down to Cairo, Ill. (~1350 miles), then a separate set from Cairo to the Gulf (~900 miles). Mile marker 0 is at Head of Passes near the river mouth in La. Generally, below the twin cities they're marked better than above where there's more wilderness (basically just a shitload of red oaks). The problem above the twin cities (between them and Itasca) is that you have to portage across multiple dam sections, which sucks because one of them is about 1/2 a mile long. I've only done it once but that was back when I was 16 and had way more energy so it will probably seem like more of a hassle this time around. Also, last time I stopped after ~900 miles and went over to Nebraska to visit family...so this will be more of an undertaking. As far as getting lost goes, there are printable maps at the Minnesota DNR website which help, honestly its not that difficult to figure out which way to go even though it looks confusing as hell on google maps, I realize. Anyway, hope this helps and for those who don't care, sorry I'm cluttering up the thread!

I got this from a website called "Fat Guys Kayaking and Fishing".
(This was my first successful attempt at getting in the kayak. The previous four attempts I capsized it, and it had nothing to do with my weight, but instead was because I have no coordination whatsoever.)

It's funny that you're going on this trip because I read about Abe Lincoln making this same trip repeatedly down the Mississippi from Illinois to New Orleans. I read about it in his biography "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter".

Well we do have these along the road by river, so you never know.

The DNR maps are much less confusing than Google Maps. Thanks for the tip.

I can't wait until the GC roster comes out tomorrow and Bruin, Davis, Hall and Ashe are inexplicably on there. The last thing we need is Cam Weaver in our XI. I don't even know how Bruin (or Gordon for that matter) made the preliminary roster over a guy like Magee. They must have crushed it in camp or something because its befuddling with their production this year.

Oh and my crazy prediction for the week, D.C. win again.

I think those first few miles out of Itasca it's going to seem more like a gondola ride than a kayak...pretty narrow if memory serves...

Yeah, actually the only other time I was there I remember reading that there was a spot just south of Itasca that was going to be 20 feet wide and about 3 feet deep but in reality I got there and it was about 6 INCHES deep. Its definitely a process getting down towards the cities where things start to pick up and widen out.

Pretty crazy how just a few hundred miles south of that it is anywhere from 1-4 miles wide.
