You know my personal opinion. If they weren't in Europe, they just weren't good enough. A lot of players can seem unusually good if you follow that particular pool of players.
Please look up Teerasil on youtube. Thai player, he looks like a complete beast even if playing in the mighty Thai league. I would have said he can do well in Europe, Atletico Madrid thought so too. They brought him in for trial some time ago and after a week, he was back at home.

I do think we could have walked away with a win or a draw without that imbecile Ha, we had a very inspired Ko Jong Soo, weren't doing so bad.

I almost 100 percent agree with you, and that is what I tell non-koreans.
There are just too many things to talk about we'll never get around to it all. Great match against Poland.
I don't think we would have beat Portugal, and I think we would have been beat, without Joao Pinto's help and the other guy sent off. They did hit a post or two, had great chances with Pauleta, Figo came very very close to scoring.
I do think we should have bowed out agaisnt Italy, though in Korea's defense they should have played with 10 men after Totti's elbow. They did have some clear one on one chances wrongly disallowed. Beside any team with players taking backheels in their own box deserve to be punished(Seol Ki Heon), it's not like he's Iniesta and Korea are Pep Guardiolas Barca. I do agree that was a close match regardless of the refereeing, unlike all italy-lovin whiners say.

I do remember the Figo free kick that hit the bar. I also remember Ahn and Lee Eul Yong missing PKs and the Italians being saved due to Buffon's great save on Hwang's nicely placed free kick. But hey Korea lost to the Germans in a fair result I would say as that Lee Chun Soo's curler from Cha Du Ri was really their only real chance and again the Koreans were slightly outplayed which is funny because the USA clearly outplayed the Germans the round before. As for the Italians, if they blame the refs they should really scream at Vieri for that wonderful sitter that he shanked I think in golden goal period

Haha that's what I've always said about Vieri.

I don't think Figo actually hit the bar, but I remember Conceicao did with a scissor kick shot. I think they did great against Germany. There was a chance almost at the end where a player would have been left one on one, I remember the ref ********ed it up somehow. Wonder if anyone remembers. I thought Korea was cheated on that one. All in all Korea did a great WC and it was only because they kept their goal at 0 in most occasions.

Some may want to lynch me for saying this but I think Korea played much better with Advocaat. I watched a game of Korea vs. Mexico around 2006 with Spanish commentary, where Korea won. I think Mexican and Argentinian commentators, they were saying how Korea played a beautiful game unlike in 2002 with long balls hopping for the best. Amazin match against France in 2006, were a bit cheated against Switzerland on their second goal, and deserved more. Must note also, that Switzerland started that match with less pressure as they had one more goal on average, because of winning 2-0 against Togo, having scored in the LAST minute, while Korea only managed a 2-1 against the Togolese. They had an amazing Lee Ho pulling the strings, pitty he fell out of grace.

Saying that if they weren't in Europe they aren't good enough is a massive leap in logic. It's harder for Korean players to get to Europe. Less scouting, less connections, less reputation. Even today our transfers to Europe are from national team performances not Kleague or Jleague. Park Ji Sung would have never played for Man U if it weren't for Hiddink. Kim Dong Jin would never have gone to Zenit if it weren't for Advocaat. Ji Dong Won would still be in the Kleague if Cho Kwang Rae didn't decide to use him in the Asian Cup.

These players aren't famous because they did well in their leagues. 90% of the people here don't give a damn about Kleague or Jleague. Hong Myung Bo led a successful Korea in the world cup while that Thai fellow never did anything outside his league.

A lot of what you say rings true. However, Korean's aren't the only players with difficulties making it to Europe. I agree they have less of a chance if they are just normal players. It's not really the case for EXCEPTIONAL players. If a player is exceptional he WILL make it to Europe. I think Park would have made it to a good team in Europe with or without Hiddink. I think we'd all agree it was harder for Cha Bum Kun to make it to Europe than it was for Hong.
Ali Karimi made it to Bayern having come from Iran. If Korean's have it difficult to make it to Europe there's no way in hell an Irianian will play there. He made it because he was exceptional and he did in fact have some wicked dribbling.
I think Hong could have played in a top league in Europe in a mid-table team. If he was good enough to play in one of the top teams, he would have been snatched up no matter what.

The point I make with Teerasil is that even he gets a shot at Europe. Hong had his shot, he was great, but not exceptional, at least not as everyone around here seems to think. I personally think he was great, but he wasn't Beckenbauer.

Everyone so hell bent on glorifying him these days because they want him as coach. They paint him as a Guardiola figure. I think he will be great as coach. His olympics were great, however keep in mind every team in that tournament played with their under 23's. Korea practically played with their senior team given that our best players are so young. Do you agree with this last point?

eh.... i'm seeing inconsistencies in your posts. What i read from your previous posts you said the Korean stars of the past would only make it to top 2nd division leagues in Europe. My point was you're being too harsh on KNT stars that didn't make it to Europe. It doesn't mean they're bad just because they didn't play there. Sometimes players don't get to the league of their level. If these players were Europeans they would have had good careers in mid/bottom table club in top European leagues. Exceptional athletic players like Cha Bum Kun will always shine but Hong Myung Bo was always going to have trouble getting noticed as a CB. As you said a wicked Iranian dribbler got to Bayern. Some qualities just stand out more and we can see that today with most of our exports to Europe being attacking players.

I don't really care who's better than him, he was a class Korean player in a time when there weren't many. People will always overrated their heros. I think you're taking BSK comments the wrong way. I have never seen anyone compare him to Beckenbauer.

Korea followed the rules like everyone else. Not our fault our best players are young. To outplay a squad like GB is quite a feat. And have you seen CKH????? We're begging for a coach like Hong Myung Bo because we're desperate to see that level of football again.

God, my whole message got deleted.

Yeah I agreed with most of your post,

    - Lots of nonflashy defenders have made it to Europe.
    - I talked about Naybet from Super Depor.
    - Rafa Marquez made it to Monaco and Barca when no one cared for the Mexican market post Hugo Sanchez.

    - I'm glad you like Hong, I like him too.
    - I think the olympic team were great as well. I was just mentioning it because everyone thinks Hong is god especially after the olympics.

I hold to my opinion Korean football was horrible pre 2002. But like I've said before, we will be a powerhouse in 20 years. The negative: so will Japan, China, USA, and others. I do hope Korea can win a WC within the next 50 years.

Guys, please take it to PM.

This thread was dedicated to Cha Bum-Kun, so stop diminishing it with your arguement.

Yea, that game went downhill after he got red carded. Ha got too excited after scoring the first goal. I think that was the first time our team scored first in a World Cup match.

The match wouldn't have been so controversial if our team scored the second goal and finished the game before the sudden d extra time. Our team was actuallly dominating after the equalizer and made some good chances. I remember Cha Du Ri's overhead kick right on front of Gianluigi Buffon for example. Before the sudden d extra time, the Italians committed extreme fouls while our players were clearly the victims. The referee was actually being lenient. I'm not sure about the controversial parts during the sudden d extra time because it's hard to tell for certain on tv. Anyway, Italy's one on one chances that you mentioned happened during that extra time. I recorded this game and watched it many times.

You have to go back and look at how many clear goals Italy got ruled out even in the group stage. This was just the icing on the cake. Definitely seems like a conspiracy against Italy, but the other teams are probably just jumping on the bandwagon.

Oh, come on. There are many teams that can complain about similar things. Mexico can complain about the non-call on the USA player punching the ball out of the box, like he was a goalie. There was a horrible ejection of that Turkey player due to Rivaldo's ridiculous playacting.

Heres a fierce korean tiger shirt for all you guys and girls! The text "Fear the Reds!" will soon be made available on the site a couple of months before the world cup happens next year.
