Most of the BB are not Man City fans so why would they support a club backed by Chiteh??? I still find it hard to believe that any fan that supports a club not named Manchester City will have anything to do with an obvious Man City lite franchise here in NYC.. ??? Yankee fans don't care about soccer, and this team is going to end up in Yonkers or Westchester.. or dare I say it New Jersey... this will be completely abbyssmal experiment that will fail horribly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an obvious Man City lite in the USA... without a doubt.. they already have said as much and who they are hiring speaks loads to the way they want this run... Hiring Claudio Reyna who played for Chiteh and has already stated that he will run the NYC club like they do Man City includeing colors, etc.. I think they brought on the Yankees to actually try to hide some of the branding, but its clear as day.. Not too mentioned owners who employ indentured servants, kill gays, and treat woman horribly!!!! No thank you and you can keep your blue moon singing twats in England..

You're assuming that the world is divided into two groups: people who love Man City and those who hate it. In reality, the vast majority of people fall into the "don't care" group.

What makes you think Yankees fans are any more or less soccer friendly than the population as a whole? Plenty of American sports fans follow teams in different sports.

And the idea that this team is going to end up somewhere like Westchester (seriously?) is beyond silly.

Excepting Bill McGuire, the owners of NASL don't have that type of cash. Cosmos don't have that much cash, otherwise they would have been competing with Mansour.

What's easier for getting a NYC sports club? Have a UAE leader? Or having Man City's sporting group as the cover? All this "Man City USA" is interesting considering people are also bashing the oil man behind the whole thing. If I'm the Sheik, I would see it as an easier PR move to have Man City group owning the club rather than his own name. So the "Man City USA" aspect of the club is probably a direct result of smoothing out social issues in NYC.

UAE human rights is a concern...however...but I doubt this is anyone's main concern. Righteous people will certainly bring it up, but I laugh when they then say, "I'm supporting the Cosmos!" Do you know where that money is coming from?! Oil Saudi/UAE money is clearly infiltrated in both clubs and isn't an issue for the Cosmos but somehow becomes an issue for NYCFC. If you support the Cosmos, you cannot use the UAE human rights issue. They have their own cover, and NYCFC has Man City's ownership group as theirs.

Yeah. Westchester?!! Stop, just stop. You are making some grand assumption that seem so far off base. To be cautious of a Man City Lite situation is prudent, i agree, but to already be sure about it because of conflicting quotes taken from interviews with Man City players on day 1 of operations is just idiotic. And is so far from "obvious"

This isn't about people like us, who love soccer and spend so much time on forums like BigSoccer. This is about the average citizen of New York who may or may not have any interest in soccer. Will they want the city to meet the Sheikh halfway on anything?

It's possible - probable even - that the Sheikh's involvement will become so toxic that they will have to consider whether or not they want to play at yankees stadium forever or consider a site outside of the five boroughs.

It's gonna be an interesting couple of years for sure

I find it comical all this *RESPECT* given to them for sticking with the Cosmos.

As I said in another thread about em:

I would give them respect if the supported neither considering their goal was to bring top flight soccer to NYC and they feel that NYCFC doesn't fit the bill. Well the Cosmos certainly don't either.

Modern day English football clubs are examples of what not to do in terms of fan community...

It's amazing how clueless some are. The EPL really shows the true poser out there. They want to make believ they get it, and show how little they do.

I didn't say they managed their fan community well (although by most accounts City are better than a lot of other EPL clubs), I said they'd know about the importance of fan communities.

So they know about the importance of fan communities but just don't care? :p I have often wondered whether those management types are malicious or just ignorant. And hey, you're the one who grouped Manchester City in with other EPL clubs.

And I agree with that grouping. From everything I've read about the move from Maine Road to City of Manchester Stadium from Man City supporters, the atmosphere has been severely dulled and I see that after the move it was rated the 2nd worst atmosphere in the league in 2007. They've definitely gone down the Emirates Stadium, FedExField, New Yankee Stadium, etc route of "fan service". AKA disregarding/pricing out fans and serving people who want to have cocktails and a steak in a stadium. This is to say nothing of the other things they do incorrectly. Look at the Bundesliga for a comparison (I'm sure you're well aware).

Comical is the right. I remember back when Beckham was at Man Utd Man City was THE fashionable club of American soccer hipsters who craved alternative cred. They would suit up in their Man City shirts and Doc Martens and prance down to the local A-League match. Now their younger brothers have latched on to this "Cosmos" astroturf dribble and we see history repeating itself.

Ah Brad..Have you ever been in UAE?
There´s a thriving gay community there actually, in Dubai in particular, women do whatever they want mostly despite their mums complaining bitterly, as for indentured servants you are talking about contract workers..Meaning everyone from the guy cleaning your car to the fat Bank manager denying you a loan.
You talk like it was Saudi or Iran.

Last year there was 35 Christian churches built in UAE..On land donated by the ruling families, they are no wahabites in UAE.

People need to get out more and see other parts of the world. Not all Muslim countries are the same. Do some have problems? Absolutely. But some are trying to change, albeit very slowly. They are changing thousand year old customs. It takes time.

    Oh perish the tought!
Murdoch love doing business in the Gulf, rely on money from the Gulf..

BSkyB and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan first announced a 50/50 joint venture to operate a free-to-air Arabic-language news channel on 29 November 2010. Adrian Wells, head of international news at Sky News, was appointed to lead preparations to launch the channel.
Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, the second-largest shareholder in News Corporation, which has a 39.1% stake in BSkyB, announced in September 2011 that he would launch another Arabic news channel, Alarab News Channel. Alarab, which is partnering with Bloomberg Television, is expected to compete directly with Sky News Arabia, in addition to existing broadcasters Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya.

Oil has basically thrust many of these societies from isolated tribal communities into a modern world stage almost overnight...add technology and it's a huge leap happening quickly. Never gonna be easy or smooth.

    Found it..These guys control Cosmos

Football was always a passion for Rakan Alharthy. An uncle was president of one of Saudi Arabia’s leading clubs and used to take him to games. But when the young Arsenal fan decided to turn his love into a business, doubters in his family were numerous and vocal.
“At the beginning my father and brothers thought I was wasting money,” he says. “They thought: ‘Oh, what are you saying? Sport is a losing business.’”
But the family indulged his ambition. They invested SR250,000 in Sela Sport, a company Mr Alharthy set up in the 1990s when he was studying medicine at King Saud University.

    Were they ever relevant?

Let's be honest. No supporter group has ever played a vital role in the creation of an expansion team. Expansion happens because really rich guys decide investing in MLS is a smart business move.

I will never get all the hand-wringing by American soccer supporters over British soccer. Who gives a flying cr*p which team in England an MLS team is or isn't connected to?

I happen to love Arsenal - mostly because of Arsene Wenger and the style of football they try to play. But my enjoyment of Arsenal has absolutely nothing to do with my commitment to Sounders and MLS. As most of you know, the Colorado Rapids are owned by the same person that controls Arsenal. There has not been one day that I have thought - well I'm an Arsenal supporter, that means I have to like Colorado.

The important thing that is happening here is that someone is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in soccer in the U.S. in our most-important city. I couldn't care less what the guy does when he's in England. MLS first. Home clubs first. Our cities first. Our country's soccer first. Crew v. Dynamo > ManU v Chelsea every day of the week and every week of the year.

Anyone who sits in a bar and whines about a Man City connection because they like ManU or some other team in some city they have never even been to can piss off. They aren't American soccer fans anyway. Real New Yorkers who love New York will show up when a good team is put on the field in a place in the city - Borough Boys be damned.
