I have always been in favor of the NYC team, and supportive of what the BBs were trying to achieve regarding to the team being within the city limits. Let me copy and paste what I said on another forum about the Cosmos: I am ecstatic that Cosmos failed in their MLS bid, absolutely ecstatic. Having them as a second MLS franchise would have been a kick in the teeth to all those old Cosmos fans who accepted the Metrostars as the natural progression to the legacy of professional soccer in New York. Same fans who later adopted the Red Bulls as their own, not because they support Red Bull the drink, but because they have a passion for the sport and support MLS. Same fans who lived through 17 years of 'that's so Metro', while those other people across the river waited for something better to arrive. Oh how we heard 'it'll be the Cosmos, they'll be instant success', well ******** you too enjoy your Cosmos in D2 on Long Island if you must. Karma is a bitch and Don Garber I applaud you. Everyone plays by the same rules, if the Cosmos didn't want single entity then they reap the benefits of everything NASL has to offer. So yeah, I'm happy about NYCFC.
You must know something the rest of us don't. Last I checked the name of the team is New York City FC not Manchester City USA, which btw, most of the BBs were totally fine with before and as the idea of a Cosmos return came along. I have yet to see a NYCFC crest, but obviously you must have, since you're so assured of Man City branding.
If some of the Borough Boys had legitimate problems with the Man City connection and decided not to follow them, I don't think anyone would be having this reaction. But the fact is, "in NYC" wasn't just a broad criterion--it was the Borough Boys' mission statement. It's right there in their name. Nassau County isn't a borough any more than Hudson County is, and that's where the Cosmos have planted their flag.
Ok lads..Let us just assume that NYCFC announced that they had bought the Cosmos copyright and will play under the name NYCosmos instead. Would that make a difference apart from making the BB bark at the moon?
No, the point was that the Borough Boys should get in touch with MCFC/Yankees and ask them what their branding intentions are. If they are intent on a Manchester City USA then the Borough Boys should make it clear why this is a bad idea and organise against it. This is going to be your only chance at a city based MLS franchise. The Cosmos ownership will never play in MLS, so forget about that. If MCFC/Yankees indicate to you that they want to brand this as a New York team, with a New York identity and no MCFC USA, with the Man City crossovers limited to advertising, post season tours etc then this is a unique opportunity the BB should jump upon. You could get in there at the start and shape this franchise, have valuable input, essentially replicate (on a smaller scale) what happened in Philadelphia. Bear in mind that the majority ownership owns an English football club, they know all about fan community on a level that most MLS FOs don't. Instead you're all sitting around whining and not being proactive whatsoever, based entirely upon a very limited in facts and statements press conference and a placeholder website. If you get in contact with MCFC and they say they're going to run with a Manchester City USA then by all means boycott it. Boycott it vehemently because that'd be the stupidest thing MLS has done in it's history (it has examples in LA and NYC already, when it didn't in the past) but at least give this a chance rather than clinging to an organisation (Cosmos) that won't bring you MLS now, tomorrow, next year or ever.
I´m sure Reyna would be willing to listen..He was always a nice guy when at City and to be honest I don´t think he´ll have that much to do right now. At a guess Martin Edelman from the MCFC Board will handle the legal stuff around the stadium while Manchester just will pay the bills.
Already have, their office had discussions with the BB. Their organization for Cosmos, as a by product, as you will see soon, is against NYCFC...and i can tell you there are no shortage of people willing to rally against it. Additionally, they are all on board with just being NASL, even if it is indefinitely. At this point its no longer about the boroughs, MLS or anything else other than getting behind what they feel best represents their members and soccer in this area. Sorry if people who are more concerned about scoring internets points or having a go at a 5 year old mission statement penned by a guy no longer even in a leadership role of the group, don't like it.
I couldnt agree more. Where is Nick from BBs on all of this? I havent seen him post lately. He always seemed to have a level head on the subject. I know he's Manu/Mets guy so this news may be too much, but to put things in perspective NYC has its top flight team that we have always wanted. Located within the 5 boroughs. I agree that if this ends up being ManCitys JV team and just a marketing ploy to market the City "brand" then they can eff off, but what if they did that to draw attention away from their owner? British Football team invests in MLS team sounds better than Arab Sheik buys MLS team. Im just wondering why the BBs didnt give it some time? They are willing to work with the Cosmos so feverishly, but why not Reyna and the NYCFC ownership group? It seems to me the BBs could have actually helped make this a NY success story. Give the organization input in team colors, crest, stadium atmosphere etc. Instead they are just turning their back on them.
Frankly the BB just sound pissy that the new team isnt the Cosmos, the Man City franchise stuff sounds like a red herring. That said if NYCFC is wearing sky blue in 2015 it will be a huuuge mistake IMO.
The fact is somebody is willing to invest a half a billion dollars in a US soccer club and SSS. That is a milestone in the history of US Soccer and anybody who doesn't cheer this news is just a jabroni looking for something to complain about.
As long as they are an independent venture to represent NYC as a top flight club in MLS, then I'll be supporting NYCFC. I look forward to seeing where they'll play. If they need a temp venue, Yankee stadium would work. Great location.
I agree, i will support as long as its run as a separate venture and its not ManCity Junior. I have never been a fan of Man City and this doesnt make me a fan either. I am just glad to have a team in NYC proper. Thats always been my wish, and although it doesnt look ideal (as i had a soft spot for Cosmos as well) its time to put up or shut up.
While I do not disagree with their specific objections to both the Red Bull and Manchester City brands, I don't believe they can define "local."
The Borough Boys say their decision is about branding, but I wonder whether it is really more about location. They said that they wanted a team in NYC, but they are centered in Queens and Brooklyn, and it seems quite possible that they really wanted a team there, not in the Bronx. To get from Queens to the Bronx by subway, you have to take one train into Manhattan and then another up to the Bronx. I think it's as long a trip as taking the subway from Queens into Manhattan and then the PATH out to Harrison. Is the Borough Boys' decision really less about Manchester City than about MLS' apparent backing away from Flushing Meadows as a possible stadium site?
I think there is some truth in this statement. I have met probably most (if not all) BBs...and their reasons for being in the supporters group vary greatly. Some are anti-Red Bull (i.e. anti-corporation), some are anti-New Jersey (i.e. pro-NYC team) and some were pro-East of the East River (i.e. pro-Queens/Brooklyn/LI). Any digging on this board will confirm that the name NYCFC was never a problem. And to some extent, having a "parent club" wasn't a problem for some (see "Real New York City" thread). I've also read and overheard many BBs not being concerned with Red Bull New York as a corporation but rather angry that the team wasn't in Queens (or BK). All these various reasons result in confused people when NYCFC was announced. Some wanted a Queens team and assumed FMP was dead (with the Yankees connection). And some just assumed NYCFC = Man City USA. This can explain supporting a LI team called the New York Cosmos. I also wouldn't support a "Man City USA" but think the effort should be spent convincing Man City to have NYCFC be the main identity (and not copy-cat Man City MLS). My main concern for success is having a stadium be near a subway line...and thus why I cannot commit to Cosmos at the moment (the real reason is that I'll be out of the country for two years). NYC subway or bust. And I don't want the Islanders of MLS. They can't even succeed in the NHL.
While I do like your avatar... its not unfathomable that the NASL by splurging cash could surpass MLS... granted highly, highly unlikely but I have to give respect to the BB's for sticking to their side and supporting them till the end whatever that may be.. could lead to a decent side or simply some nice retro hoodies and tshirts??? who knows, but the restrictions of MLS are not on NASL sides and Cosmos ownership has large pockets... AGAIN HIGHLY UNLIKELY BUT STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED!!!!!
