Ok, but what about those individual ticket sales? It's April already.

I have to see Kreiger, Casey, and Rampone.

Timbers single games went on sale something like 2 weeks before their opener this year. I'd expect the same to be true for the Thorns and their home opener.

You must be kidding. To get the best flight and hotel deals, you have to schedule at least 3-4 weeks out for a game. Other teams are offering individual game tickets now. How big is that stadium? Even if they have 10,000 season tickets, they can open a couple hundred seats. If they didn't have this kind of demand, they wouldn't be pulling this off. Everyone doesn't live in Portland.

I have no clue if that is what they plan on doing for the Thorns. I was surprised that they waited that long for the Timbers as well, especially since all of the Timbers season tickets for this year were sold out in October. Try sending @thornsFC a tweet (if you are on twitter), they might be able to give you a date when they'll start selling them.

I would get your trip plans sorted now, and then pick up a ticket when they go on sale. That's what I've done for Seattle v. KCFC in May. It seems extremely unlikely that many - or any? - games will absolutely, 100% sell out. Maybe the Thorns' opener v. Reign?

Anyone know what exactly the capacity at Jeld-Wen is for the women's games?

The lower bowl seats about 11K . Total seating is about 20.5k.

Just book your flight. There will be tickets.

Careful, New. Your enthusiasm to see Portland play might lead people to think you've become an Alex Morgan fan boy.

You don't have to go to rainy Jeld-Wen to see them play.

Actually, I was thinking opposite field, since the visiting crowds tend to be there, and I will be rooting against Portland. I couldn't possibly sit in a section with the crowd mouthing off about Morgan for 2 hours straight. But the accommodations sound nice.

this article is a complete scam over at equalizer. the writer is trying to make portland into the "little engine that could" when they got sinclair, morgan, heath and buehler. the only thing that stands between this team and the championship is aaron lines and his coaching and organizational advantage. we'll see if wps called this correctly, since he/she was the first to say, lines would build a team around wambach.

we all know they are top loaded to keep those 7000 season ticket holders happy and winning, right?

read up on becky edwards. like i said, she's the queen to shannon boxx's throne. are you out there sermanni?

    hercircumstance :D
Only the most ardent allocation apologist believed Portland would have trouble filling out their roster. That's why it was such a crime they were gifted two of the best forwards in the entire world in an extremely shady allocation. It wasn't going to be hard for them to find talent for the easier to fill spots. In a league where there are so few top forwards to go around they should have never been given two in the first place. They were given two, a playmaker, a top defender, and one of the better goalkeepers out of the gate. Meanwhile look at Spirit. Hm. There was a clear need to distribute forwards evenly and they decided to set up a media darling super team instead of doing the right thing.
So please, in the very least, stop rewriting history to make it seem like the Thorns overcame some kind of adversity in the team construction process. They didn't.

Edwards did nothing special last night. Her most memorable moment was cranking up for a shot from about the midfield circle. We used to call those...ambitious....

She and her back line need to get organized on defence.the early concerns that the Thorns roster will struggle in the back may well be true. If they struggle against college kids, the will be doormats for the internationals.

First seven matches, Portland will start off with two wins, three draws, two losses.
    They'll take off after that.

The end of their schedule is a game every three days for five in a row. Several on the road. That's a brutal schedule and they won't win all those with a small roster.

And if the Thorns waste their forwards with all those shots from distance they will negate their advantage.

Morgan and Sinclair will not be happy.

I think Portland's defense will be clicking more by the end of the year.
It may get rocky for them early in the year.
I could see LeBlanc giving up quite a few more goals early in the year, than late in the year, despite the tough schedule at the end.

I think he meant she looked the most comfortable on the pitch. When I speak of Edwards, I'm talking about her body of work. She's the best fit to succeed Boxx after the WC, or at least sub her without much drop off.

I'm talking about her body of work for the Thorns. This was day one and nobody on the defensive side was especially good at meeting challenges. But it is early. We'll see how the team does with a few games under their belts and see if Cindy can put a team together.

If Becky is one of the ones that does manage the task, then maybe she will advance to the Nats. It's a big task. Some we saw last night won't see it through.

Clive, what did you think of the two junior forwards, Radovcic and Shufelt? Jonanna's report on stumptownfooty didn't seem enthused by their lack of shots. And Barker and Reis in goal?

are you talking about miss becky, or cindy's inability to put a team together? it sounds like the latter.

It's both. Edwards won't show anything if she isn't in a position to do it. That won't be a path for the Nats. Her shot from distance was ambitious or ridiculous, so she will have to show better judgement with Morgan and Sinclair on the pitch. And while she held her own against college players, she wasn't outstanding. She will have to up her game to shine against pros.

When I started reading this I thought you were going to ask about UP's junior forwards. :)
They will have great senior years.

Radovcic was less impressive. Lots of movement, but not much of it was directed at being dangerous in the penalty area. She took no shots that I recall. Shufelt also was content to take her couple licks from the outside. Her contribution was taking the shot From distance that Foxhoven pounced on. but at least she shot (twice). I have this goofy idea that forwards ought to be plying their trade close to the opponents goal, and that was lacking.
Foxhoven was the only forward who really penetrated. Kerr's familiarity with her (they played together in college) probably helped, but UP's familiarity with Dani made her easier to mark without distraction.

Not being particularly dangerous in the box was an issue for the whole thorns team. Foxhoven took 5 shots, Shufelt took 2, the rest were from Mids and most of those were from outside the 18. They were content to blast away from outside the area, for the most part. Foxhoven was the only forward who was consistently in the box, and Kerr was the only Mid who took more than a couple from inside the 18. The number of shots was impressive, Only Longs succeeded. Half weren't on frame. The Edwards one from extreme distance sort of demonstrated the lack of discipline to get into dangerous positions. If they do that with Sinclair and Morgan on the field they will be playing into opponents hands. If I were an opposing coach, it is what I would hope for. While the mids did win lots of balls, except for Kerr they didn't particularly see getting the ball to forwards as a priority.

Still, the midfield was the Thorn's strength for the night. They can win balls. I just don't see them playing barça-ball with a short passing game if that is what you expect as possession football. If teams overplay them to the outside and force them in, I'm not sure they will be effective up the middle of the pitch. They will try hard to go wide.

I should comment that Kerr also moved to forward after the second Thorn goal and the Thorns took out Foxhoven brought in Wetzel to kill out the game. Kerr seemed to have a better idea of what a forward is supposed to do than Shufelt, though I can't recall her having played the position In college.

UP played a defend and counter game, as they only have 12 field players suited up for Spring ball. They had to conserve energy. So Barker and Reis didn't have a lot to do. UP only is credited with 6 shots. I should probably comment that some Thorns players didn't look game fit for 90 minutes. A few games will probably change that or they will sit when FIFA-type sub rules are in effect.

Frisbie chipped Barker for UP's goal after beating Williamson on a counter and Barker came out to cut down the angle. When she played for Pepperdine this year, Frisbie Nutmegged her for a goal 1v1, so she was probably worried about that. Barker came out again later 1 v1 when Frisbie got past Williamson again and smothered the shot that time, so she did fine there, but Frisbie had a tougher shot.

Reis came in for the second half. She also came out to stop a 1v1 on a forward - (I think Cameli, but maybe Capelle) and she stopped that. And she blundered a clearing kick in the last minute kicking it to Capelle who then rounded a defender and Reis to be presented with an empty net from a wide angle. Capelle rushed her shot and side netted it, so Reis had some luck with her clean slate. Capelle hits 9 out of 10 of those.

Otherwise she did OK. She didn't have to stop any high shots ( Barker's strength when I saw her in college), so I have no idea how she does with them. Her stature has to make it tempting for forwards to shoot high. Frisbie was playing fullback at the end of the game (12 field players, remember?) and she was so temped she took a 40 yarder like Edward's. Unfortunately for her, it was chest high for Reis. I don't see Reis as being capable of tipping shots over the bar, but that might just be my prejudice.

But since UP was in a defensive shell much of the night, neither keeper was really tested. That will probably have to wait until the season when they play another NWSL match and Leblanc is again gone. I am not aware of any Thorns games against College or NWSL teams, which leads me to believe they will be closed door affairs. I can't imagine Cone would go into a season with only one game as prep.

As I think CP commented, it was the UP keepers who did well. Junior Erin Dees had a clean slate in the first half on 6 saves. A couple were stirling. She had the best showing out there.

Sophomore Nicole Dowling played the second half and also saved 6, and a couple were tips over the bar. She didn't manage to keep hold of a hard shot from Shufelt which led to the Foxhoven goal, and I don't think she had a chance on Long's strike just inside the post from about 20 yards.

    Hope that helped.
