Whatever, the only reason they are celebrating it is because of our champion stature. Yeah, hope we stick it to em this year too. The day that other teams stop celebrating when teams like Chivas tie us is when we're not doing our job.

The quotes from Chelis about us being the "NY team" due to favoritism made me straight up laugh today.

Go on thinking we're magnificent and the power of the league. Because you know what?

    We are.

Can't wait for CCL and our next game.

Well we played pretty poorly and Chivas countered our superior talent by mucking up the game and we couldn't raise our play to overcome it. Perhaps some CCL hangover, or a classic trap game where we underestimated the opponent. The real test is how we respond next week vs. Colorado....

My main question: where does Landon go when he's back? T minus 1 week (yes!!!!!!!!!!), and I'm at a loss.

He + Robbie up top are clearly the preferred pairing. I love Magee, but there were times today with Magee/Villareal/McBean where I could literally hear Robbie yearning for LD. They are just better at playing the simple pass to one another and leading one another into the final 18. We saw it last year.

But our wings - specifically the right wing - just aren't good enough right now. So it would make sense to slot in LD at RM like in the past, but that just seems like a waste now. Having him toil on the right and not ruin defenses by running at them up top? Then again, he's our best crosser.

    Sigh.

I think I would go with Leonardo in, AJ out right, Sean at RM (heresy I know) and Robbie + Landon up top and see what happens. Sean can't perform you take Leo out, shift everyone over, bring in one of the teenagers, and Landon goes out right. Likely what would happen if we take the lead and we go to protect it.

After the first few games what do people think? RM or FW for LD?

And we likely will not have Omar, so that back line is going to be interesting.

With that said, Colorado so far has been awful. Even with Omar out it should be 3 points.

I was hoping that harmless garbage goal given up at the end of the Herediano game had taught the team to remain focused until the final whistle. Unfortunately we gave up another 80+min goal, but this time we lost two points as a result. Hopefully this doesn't become a trend (again) and we can sew up this leak.

This might be the last game that Keane plays with the Galaxy until the Monterrey match, on the 3rd. Unless he comes in as a sub in the Toronto game. But I could see Bruce holding him out because of travel until CCL play.

“A human being has to conduct himself with respect and has to know how to respect others,” Sánchez Solá told reporters.

Our adversary was magnificent. They are by far the best team in the league and one of the best on this continent. I respect what they do, but they are New York’s team. They are the team of the New York office. … There were 70 fouls that cut our defense or amplified their offense, so in a way, that’s biased. That sort of team exists in Spain with Real Madrid and Argentina with Boca Juniors. There is a team in every country. Galaxy is that team here.”

    Yeah, but he ain't mad...

Also, a stupid redcard call (I saw the foul Salazar did, it was a trailing foot right into Clark's chest. Yellow, maybe, on a bad day) and Franklin's foot all up in that Chivas player's grill did one good thing for us: That was probably the only way in an LA:Chivas game that Chivas comes off as the sentimental favorite. The league's hate is what sustains us. We need that.

EDIT: Well, the hate of the rest of the league's fans and being the home office's favorites. That sustains us.

I was also surprised by the red card, but we simply didn't take advantage of the man advantage.

He didn't deserve a red on that play, the ref was just tired of the blatant dirty playing Chivas was doing had enough. Half their team deserved to get red.

Bruce made terrible blunders though, he really isn't that great of a tactician. When the red happened we should've pushed Franklin up and went for that goal. Also when we went ahead someone shouldve dropped back and made a back 4 again rather than 3.

Yeah true that. The more hate we get the more obvious it is we are pissing everyone off with our dominance.

I know it's damn near impossible in MLS but it would be nice to go 15-20 points clear of the league like United has done this year. That would really piss people off :D

I also wonder how much we miss a player like Becks in games like this. He definitely knows how to answer to adversity and you know he inspired our players around him to do the same.

Another reason MLS is a stupid league for playing during international breaks, f*ing ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure we are the hardest hit team every year from these f*ing games.

RM. LD is GREAT with Keane up front but we have no decent wide mids and honestly our CMs aren't impressing me that much either, our midfield sucks and that used to be our strong point. We really need that 3rd DP in the mid.

This is blasphemy for some but I propose we trade Franklin away for a decent RM/LM. He doesn't cut it at the midfield and AJ is a more versatile defender. If we didnt' have this silly cap Franklin would be great depth but we can't afford to have him sitting on the bench. The Sounders are pretty freaking desperate for a fullback, perhaps we can pry away Zakuani for him ;) It wouldn't be the stupidest trade for them since he hasnt hit full form and with Martins they could deploy a 4-3-3.
Anyway, assuming no trade best case scenario is Zardes breaks out as the ideal partner for Keane allowing LD to be at RM. Villareal is obviously still too young to be starting, Magee is hot and cold, and McBean is just too damn slow and is also too young to be starting.

Allow me to dream for a second:
    -----Zardes----Keane-----
    Zakuani---------Donovan
    ---Lampard-Juninho----
    Duni---Gonzo--Leo---AJ
    --------Cudiccini----------

*besides Zardes being an unknown that lineup all of a sudden doesn't have a single flaw in it and all of a sudden we have Villareal, Magee, and Sarvas on the bench who can all come in late and change games for us. we are SORELY lacking that depth right now.

phoenixhazard, I just wonder, how many times are you going to propose trading away Franklin? You see all the bad and none of the good he does. So, yeah, blasphemy. ;)

never said Franklin is a bad player but if AJ takes RB he really isn't a phenomenal RM. You know this. So yes if we can strengthen needed areas he is our best trade bait. I hate this leagues system b/c we should be able to keep him and strengthen, salary cap needs to be expanded. fuuuuuuuu

Sometimes I come to this board for news, sometimes for opinions and analysis, sometimes because I am bored, and some days, like today, for Catharsis.

Let me start with the obvious things:

    1. The team was flat, and looked like it absolutely had a CCL hangover. That said, we were still clearly the better team.
    2. That was one of the ugliest, stupidest games I have seen---the Ref never had control of the game, and he allowed (both prior to the red and after) tons of card-worthy fouls to go unpunished. I lost track of the tackles that went through the legs from behind, the high-cleat to Magee's knee was clearly an attempt to injure, the shoulder to AJ's head was crazy---and then the actual red card was also dumb. I am in the camp that I believe the hit was a foul, but not a red. It's a foul because Clark was already on the ground and couldn't stop, and he just trailed into him and tried to make it look innocent. So foul, but definitely not a red card.
    3. However, that said, the ref had clearly been warning Chivas and he looked like he just had it----saw what must have looked to him like a bad foul from his angle and pulled the card. So a red card was absolutely deserved for Chivas, just not on that play. If the ref had given yellow for every bad tackle in that game, Chivas would have had 8 players on yellows and at least 2 ejections for two yellows.
    4. The defense on the last goal was just atrocious. Deserved a draw after that. Nothing really to say, I think maybe they didn't sort out how the defense was going to drop back after McBean scored, and the 3 man backline should have shifted back to 4 and didn't, then ball watching, and Bam.

    Now the less obvious:

    1. Chelis may actually make Chivas a force even with inferior players, but I absolutely hate how he is going about it. He clearly figured they'd just foul and foul and foul and the ref would get tired of blowing the whistle, which is what happened. Ugly, crappy soccer, nothing "brave" about it, it's just figuring you can't win straight up, so you might as well take a bunch of risks, hope you don't finish with 9 men, and try to grind out a draw.
    2. Villareal looked his age. Which is fine, he just came off a big game, he has to learn consistency, but he definitely looked a bit behind a lot of plays. That's what happens when you're starting a 19 year old. He'll be better next game.
    3. I am getting more an more impressed with McBean. He is getting into that category of players who just make things happen. He's not obviously the best athlete on the field, and won't ever be, but he's strong on the ball, gets into good places, and doesn't give up on plays. I like him a lot, thought he played very well.
    4. I really hate Robbie's arm-waving, but I see why he does it. He's not just calling for the ball a lot of the time--he's trying to say where the pass should or shouldn't go/have gone. Without Beckham and Donovan, he's having a tough time being on the same page as the rest of the midfield and frontline, and you can tell it really frustrates him. His foul at the end was clearly "this game is going to end tied, I have been getting hacked every freaking time I touch the ball, I am going to go get one back." No problem with it, it was that kind of a game.
    5. Franklin's card was an enforcer foul. I understand why he did it, but that was risky, and I think the yellow was appropriate.

OVERALL LESSONS: Chivas is going to make it very hard to ref their games this year, the Galaxy were flat and need some creative help in the form of getting all their DP's on the field, it's a hiccup in the overall not something to worry about, and I really, really hate Chivas again.

I'm not worried. We've scored 9 goals in 4 games and the only shutout against us was due to a bad call.

I didn't see what happened for the second yellow, but Franklin should have gone. Then again, Chivas hacked from start to finish. The ref let things escalate before throwing yellow cards around.

As we've had a legit goal ruled out and an awful penalty awarded against us already this season, on top of the crap Chivas pulled throughout this one, I don't feel too bad about the red card decisions.

But seriously, one lackluster performance (and it was lackluster as opposed to terrible) and people are already approaching the ledge?

I feel like no matter how many titles we win or how many times we come good, I start every season talking people down during gross overreactions.

For the billionth f'n time: it's a parity drive league - every team is going to have off days and big performances.

If there's one person I will call out, it's Robbie Keane. He hogs the ball or at least tries to create situations where he's on the receiving end. On one play, Villarreal attempted a one-two that if returned, would have put him through on goal. Keane didn't take the option, took an unnecessary touch, ran out of space so slipped it to Magee.

I'm also sick and tired of him taking himself out of the run of play because he want to complain to the ref. On at least two occasions, he was robbed of possession on a blown call but the play wasn't dead. Instead of trying to win the ball back or waiting to see if we retrieved the ball, he immediately started walking towards the ref who was a good 20 yards away.

The worst example was when he was fouled off the ball during a counter attack. He was understandably annoyed, but because he started walking towards the center circle he completely missed that we'd retrieved the ball and were moving continuing to attack!

Those are just frustrating quibbles though. He remains an excellent player for us, clearly.

So do we feel bad for Chivas because they got a guy sent off for no reason while we should have had Franklin sent off?

Pro Galaxy bias is real or Salazar was temporarily blinded for a day? (pssttt the latter)

Right, we all know what a cool head David has. I don't think I have ever seen him let his temper get the better of him and get a stupid foul and get carded as a result. (Note unfortunately the sarcasm font is missing).

Based on how Salazar was reffing the game, Franklin should not have been sent off. He was letting the same stuff go with Chivas. Different ref, different game, tighter calls and more control? Sure. But Franklin was dishing back what they were getting, it was a nasty play, and with how the game was being called, yellow was appropriate. Otherwise, you've got to call the high boot to Magee and the deliberate shoulder to AJ's head.

I don't think Salazar really had control of the game at any point. Chelis made his job really hard with his tactics, and he flunked the test.
