Romario has 1000 goals on the beaches of Brazil and in stupid league of brazil, Ronaldo made 400 and more gol in Europe.

Romario however, never made 1000 goals, but 700 and a little more.......in stupid leagues

You forgot to C.Ronaldo inspired him.

Messi about Ronaldo: "Ronaldo was my hero,"
"I loved watching players like [Zinedine] Zidane, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo but Ronaldo was the best striker I've ever seen," he added. "He was so fast he could score from nothing, and could shoot the ball better than anyone I've ever seen."

Romario was seen as a successor to Pele, of course, Pele went on the media to discredit Romario every chance he got. He was a contemporary of Maradona, so could not be labeled a successor.
And I think many defenders were scared of facing Romario, teams built their defense to stop him, particularly Italy in the WC94 final rushing Baresi back to play.
Romario was Ronaldo's idol, by the way.

1- You´re right about that. Ronaldo was regarded as a likely sucessor for Pele/Maradona due to his wonderful seasons in Barça and Inter at such young age, a real prodigy. People believed that he would improve even more and reached his peak at age 25/28 like most of the players.Unfortunately, injuries affected him a lot. Without injuries, I think he could have become a top 5 player ever, but that´s just my guess.
2- Yes, many DF also praise Romario for his talent. Some good examples:
Baresi: "Maradona is the best player I ever played against. Then Romario was another very tough player to play against."
    http://www.khaleejtimes.com/sport/i...0/March/football_March58.xml&section=football
Gary Neville: "I have to say the toughest striker that I ever played against was Brazil´s Romario. There are a lot of good strikers that went against me, but Romario was the one special man that was tough to play against."
    http://www.sportskeeda.com/2012/01/...iker-that-i-have-played-against-gary-neville/
Jaap Stam on Romario: "Unstoppable at his best; truly one of a kind. Even during the Club World Cup in 2000, when he was playing for Vasco against Manchester United, you could still see what a marvellous technique and eye for goal he had, even though he was past his best."
    http://fourfourtwo.com/interviews/perfectxi/207/article.aspx
    And so on...
3- Yes, he was a idol for many famous players too: Robben, Mario Gomez, Giggs, Raul,Van der Vaart, Puyol, Henry, Malouda, Ronaldinho, Luis Fabiano, Neymar (he said that all great brazilian players are his idols, but he chose the number 11 of his shirt because of Romario),etc. Also former players (Tostao,Pele,Rivelino,Gerson, Stoichkov,Laudrup,Baggio, Cruyff, etc) praise him:

In 47:40, Laudrup said great things about him

For 2 and 3. I knew of those but my point is the REAL thing: DF scared of facing 1on 1 with Ronaldo, and many great names had Idolized him, not simple wordings in "praises" per se ... (of course Romario deserved a lot of praises)

Look I can "praise" many great names, but I ONLY HAVE ONE IDOL. That's diffrent

Considering a bunch of kids today have the name Romario.. yes a bunch of parents and kids dreamed of being the new Romario.. You don't see as many Ronaldos...

I second that ... inside Brazil Romario is a big image.
I gave some examples of "big names footballer" who put Ronaldo as their IDOL, from Brazil to other nations in Europe Africa... and controversial with Argentina arch rival footballers (like Crespo) That's a huge impression around the world that Ronaldo made.

Even Messi (at 18 at time) during his very first interview after the Youth cup, he said" I never seen Pele, Maradona playing, but Ronaldo was teh one who impressed me much at younger age"

It really is funny how things work... during the great generation of players the likes of Ronaldo, a Messi was watching (Argentine). But then before him, during hte 80s.... Ronaldo as a kid and Ronaldinho as kids... watched and looked up to Maradona.

Maradona... who did he look up to? Rivelino! :p

    Funny huh?

Ronaldinho might have looked up to Maradona in style ... agree (even he always claimed Ronaldo was his idol)
Ronaldo looked up to Zico, not Maradona.

I agree with you about that huge global impression that Ronaldo made in the second half of the 90´s. I remember that his face was in everywhere at that time and he was a hero for the kids. I think it´s interesting that, excluding Maradona (who was clearly a better player), no players in the Era 86/95 (strong Era) made such a midiatic impression around the world as Ronaldo. IMO, Van Basten and Romario (and maybe Baggio too) were legends who can be mentioned in the same breath with Ronaldo, however none of them had that big impact with media and public. I think the football marketing changed a lot since 1996 and Ronaldo, a prodigy boy, marketable and best player of that time, was a symbol of this change. Nowadays, Messi and C.Ronaldo became global stars. The portuguese had + 50 million fans in Facebook (even more than Messi), due to his marketable image + great performances. So, I think marketing, alongside great performances of course, is an important factor for the impression that players made around the world.

    You just said it all..

It's all about selling jerseys.. so the players nowadays get a lot more exposure and marketability in order to sell more. Which means you get to watch them more. While at the same time, players back in the 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, you hardly got to see them play.

Well, Maradona after WC86 made bigger image than Ronaldo surely/ he quickly became on par with Pele at top.

Of course Romario Basten are in same breadth with Ronaldo (very slightly different in between).
Besides the "media", Ronaldo did make a great image with his "trade mark so lo goals" from Barca in Liga to Inter of SerieA at 20 to 21yrs old= those dribble run and solo goals made him a great impact at time. Like Messi now, his dribbling skills and scoring record at Barca made people thrilled. Romario and Basten were also very good in dribble, but not quite as good as Ronaldo (or Messi) = that's the main drive on top of the media (NIKE )

Van Basten was actually highly regarded (often in TOP10 list before 99) and now often in TOP10-15 even higher than Roanldo. Roamrio was somehow "under rated" in those list (mostly at below 25 ) I agree. Blame on his return to Brazil too early, and absemce at Wc98 02,!!!

Its also good to note that Nike were the kings of marketing at the time, and still are. With the Brazil Airport commercial and the Joga Bonito campaign. Remember how popular Michael Jordan was? A lot of that had to do with Nike

Talking about Ronaldo, Barça is doing some great videos about their recent legends. They made great videos for Rivaldo, Romario, Stoichkov, Bakero, Eto´o and now they made one for Ronaldo ( I hope they make one of Laudrup too, a joy to watch). Before injuries, Ronaldo was so dynamic, one of the best dribblers ever, strong and fast with the ball. It´s clear that his abilities decreased on his Real Madrid years, however it´s also clear that Post-injuries Ronaldo was a better finisher than the young Ronaldo. It´s sad to think that he never reached his supposed peak, combining all these qualities, due to injuries and also lack of professionalism on his Post-WC2002 career.

    Very well spot on.
Pre-injured Roanldo was like a complete and flashy forward who could score, run to midfield and create chances (between Zico and Romario)
Post injured Ronaldo was liek another person: A True predator striker (close to Romario) his precision shots and longshots became better to compensate for his "heavier" and less agility body (in dribble and close ball control)

We had never gotten to see the "best Ronaldo" - like you mentioned of a great combination pre and post injuries time = shoudl be closer to Pele/Maradona level

There is no comparison Ronaldo was superior in all

The only players who have a control ball as that of Ronaldo are Maradona and Messi with the difference that Ronaldo was 3 times faster

For me, the most effective dribbling are
1-Ronaldo pre-injury played and owed the best defenders
    2-Maradona
    3-Messi

Top 3 all time for me
    1Maradona
    2Ronaldo
    3Messi

If Messi also prove to be a great player out of Barcelona then I'll put in the first place
