Thanks....the MLS app I downloaded had an updated roster but the schedule was still last years...I'll give the Fot Mob a try
Interesting info in the MLS article on the Gals - http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/02/07/klein-mls-moves-forward-galaxy-must-lead-way Per Garth's comments, RSL expects to get close to or eclipse 10k season tix this year. We're doing pretty well in SLC at a fraction of population. Too bad we can't command the same ad and sponsorship rates or we could afford more DP salaries as well.
Actually, the ability to afford a DP salary has little to do with ad/sponsorship money and more to do with the owner's expectations for the business' P&L. In general, an owner with more capital is going to be more willing to accept a larger payroll because he doesn't need the business to make more money right now. Let's face it: As long as Dave Checketts owned RSL, we were not going to see a DP because Dave was the "poorest" owner in MLS. He simply couldn't afford to spend that much money because he didn't have that much to spend, even though he probably knew it would be worth it in the long run. That's one thing I like about DLH taking full control of the team: Where Dave's fortune was an 8-figure number, DLH's is a 9-figure number. He definitely can afford a DP, and he has hinted at such a player in the future. I liken it to how Manchester City started buying good players (and becoming an EPL power) when billionaire Sheik Whatever-His-Name-Is bought them.
So we are going to possibly become the noisy neighbors? I'm cool with that. Please bring in a yaya toure
@joshuamayers tweeted that Shalrie Joseph is trialing with Seattle. Chivas still own his rights. A tandem of Alonso and Shalrie would be quite interesting.
Quote from Shalrie: "It feels good to train with some guys who actually appreciate what I can bring to a team." Ouch.
Any place that can chew up Robin Fraser and spit him out it a heap has to be a terrible place to work. Although I was hoping Shalrie would say something about his accent being a problem too.
Sigi had a quote about Shalrie too: "It's very evident that he hasn't trained in a while. It's evident that he's very much behind physically." They won't be signing him (or trading for him as it were).
All sorts of major injuries, much worse than our spate in their longevity and severity. Bright Dike is out for Portland until August at least; the two big signings for the Rapids from last season are out for weeks or months.
Agreed, as much as I dislike the cRapids, losing Rivero and Castrillon might have already blown their season. Not cool for their fans or the league. PS but maybe its good for RSL's RMC chances.
http://www.sunherald.com/2013/02/10/4459763/stadium-sponsorships-becoming.html You're right - the $70M/10 year deal for 'Home Depot Center' (expiring soon) noted in that article has little to do with LA's profitability and paying DP salaries...
Great point. I'd rep the post if it was less mean-spirited in tone...but a good data point to bring into the story - likewise LA gets a lot more from local TV. It's the same big market dynamic that makes the Lakers Knicks etc able to afford the luxury tax so easily in the NBA.
If I have but one regret this offseason it's this: That RSL hasn't cashed in on Chivas' fire sale. Today they just unloaded James Riley - an outside back in the prime of his career - for a 2015 2nd-round pick in the supplemental draft. Jeebus. Bonus regret: RSL didn't make a move to get Falcao.
Chivas currently has only 20 players on its roster, with at least two of those (McKenzie and Joseph) not in camp and actively trialing with other teams. At last count there were a whopping 15 additional players on trial.
Robbie Rogers publicly announces his retirement from soccer (he's only 25) and comes out of the closet. robbierogers8.moonfruit.com
Wow...in a one-paragraph blog post, Robbie Rogers comes out of the closet and announces he's retiring from soccer. He's 25. EDIT: Senordrummer beat me to it.
After reading through the former players thread on CBus's forum, it looks like he got a job with Men's Health magazine in London. Link
It's worth noting that his blog post says he's "stepping away" from soccer...that's different from retiring (IMO). Hopefully he comes back because he's a talented young player who hasn't yet reached the prime of his career. Best of luck to him.
Too bad he's quitting. Professional sports need more openly gay athletes. Edit: Oh...stepping away...not quitting.
I wish there were more in general, not just sports. It's a shame that society puts that kind of pressure on someone that they can't just openly be who they are.
Looking at that art site, it appears to me that the Chivas one shows the current team roster! http://futbolartistnetwork.com/shop/art/chivas_usa_betirribengston
Ho hum. Another gay person comes out of the closet. A few year ago, it used to be news, but now, big whoop. Kind of like beauty contestants saying that they are for "whirled peas".
