I double checked it on www.yelp.com and I'm pretty sure they're closed. Internet information is kind of lax though so take it for what it's worth.
Well that's sad, it is like a little bit of BBQ history died. It'd be like no Harold's in Atlanta. I don't eat at Harold's because it is on the otherside of town, but I plan to go there one day because it is Harold's is important in Atlanta's BBQ history.
Today we're doing Carolina low country ribs rubbed with Old Bay seasoning and finished with homemade Carolina Mustard sauce.
When I was in KC, I asked 5 people where I should go for barbcue, the unanimous decision was Oklahoma Joe's. They open at 11 am, when I got there, there was already a line of 50-60 people. Had the ribs & brisket. For a bbq joint inside a gas station, it wasn't bad. For a bbq joint period, it was dismal. their meats were dry & had little flavor, no smoke flavor. People kept telling me that it was all about the sauce. Really disappointed because I can make better ribs & brisket. Went to Pappy's in St. louis & it was the bomb. Opens at 11 am, & there were already 80 people queueing. Their ribs were perfect, just enough chew and tenderness, had that smoky flavor, the rub was delectable, really lip-smacking good. Their brisket was also very good, although the baked beans were a bit too sweet for my taste. overall, the best ribs I've ever had. I don't know if it would qualify as true bbq, but if you've never been, you gotta try a Korean bbq. Most of these joints in the Bay ARea are an all-you-can-eat affair, you take the the raw marinated meats [short ribs, pork, chicken, etc.] from a buffet & cook it at a grill on your table. It's a real communal affair and a real treat for family and friends.
It is always a good omen when the sign out front giving the hours of operation says: 11:00 AM - until the food runs out.
How far south of Austin? I have friends in Houston that we plan to visit and we are going to sample some of the most famous Texas BBQ shrines. Austin is on the tour and Milt’s looks like a good candidate for a side trip.
20mins south of Austin. I havent been to Milts yet. this vid was taken by a friend. I would recommend luling, just off I-10 for county fair BBQ, then lockhart for Kreuz BBQ, I didnt like Blacks BBQ, but you could try that also. Then if you go up from there to Kyle, you can pass by Milts, then from Kyle take FM 150 up to Salt Lick, then you can cut up somehow to Austin, check out Rudys in Austin, Better Brisket than Salt Lick, I like the extra moist. those are the places ive been but there are others as well. I go to rudy's on capital of tx in Austin quite often.
Firing up the 'Big Easy' today for a little pulled pork: http://grillinfools.com/blog/2010/07/28/pulled-pork-done-in-an-infrared-grill/
Fair warning to all of you visiting Memphis - avoid Central BBQ. Many around here talk about it as being good, in particular raving about the nachos. I was there the other day with 7 others, and nobody was enthused about their food. For me, in particular, their sauce sucks. The regular is too sweet, and the spicy smelled horrible (almost rotten). That is all.
map of some good TX bbq, there are more, but here is a good list https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=211515241370632660815.0004ca3872650d07a1e90
I really like Cooper's in New Braunfels. The brisket was great and the sausage was fantastic. Not to mention, a good ol' ice cold beer of Shiner with my meal. I was happy.
Virgil's sucks and it is smack in the middle of tourist trapville. Went there once and will never go back.
I did some training for my job in Kansas City and can report that eating at Jack Stack BBQ was the highlight of my week-long stay. The Crown Prime Beef Short-Ribs were out of this world and the cheesy corn-bake was one of the best sides that I've ever tasted. Most of the locals I talked to seemed to favor this place of Arthur Bryant. All I know is it beat the pants off some of the crap joints in San Jose like Sonoma Chicken Coop and Famous Dave's.
Jack Stack is good, more of like where a local would go take out-of-towners. Bryant must have a strong local appeal because it's a dump in a sketchy neighborhood, and the food is not that appealing. Sonoma Chicken Coop, haven't been there yet, probably never will
LOL @ Sonoma Chicken Coop. We have a local BBQ place in San Carlos (up the road a bit from you guys) called Mack's, which is tasty enough, but does not match up to anything in real BBQ places like Kansas City or Austin. It's better than any other BBQ I've had around here though. Man, I need to get my company to send me to Austin again, like they did a few years ago.
Yeah Texas even has BBQ fast food joints that could put some of the fancier California BBQ places to shame. When I was stationed in San Antonio I used to frequent a chain called Rudy's that was pretty decent. Them Texans ain't got nothing on the Mexican or variety of asian cuisines that we get to enjoy over here though.
