I wouldn't call RvP had a bad game. I thought his movement was still slick; he got behind his defenders couple times, and as usual, always tried to make his teammates involved. Had a couple strong header defending set-pieces. And of course, the penalty was well taken, especially after the 5+ minutes delay and pressure from the crowd.

Seems like RvP is having the same issue he had with Oranje under BvM. No support from midfield (Carrick is rubbish). The two wingers were too busy dribbling and running around, but failed to service the box (if Carrick is rubbish, Nani takes it up to a whole different level). And the playmaker (Kagawa) got crowded and shut down as soon as he touched the ball. Hard to judge only after a month in season. But, I am pretty confident that M Utd could only get better from this point. With Rooney back in fold, hopefully RvP will get a lot more quality services. The other player who I think could make a difference in Ashley Young. He can swing crosses, and has done pretty well playing as a 'false' playmaker.

Onto a different topic, how long Tim Krul is supposed to be out?

Van Persie with two well-taken goals yesterday. Could have had a hattrick, but the Cluj keeper prevented this. With Rooney starting alongside, RvP got a much better service. He also dropped deep several times to allow Rooney and Hernandez run into space. Speaking of Chicarito, I thought he had a pretty disastrous game... hardly touched the ball and couldn't get to the rhythm. I think he should be benched, in lieue of someone who can provide width and pace, like Nani or A. Young (when he's recovered). Not convinced with the entire midfield, Anderson in particular was quite mediocre. I bet Clasie can do a better job there. Any ideas if Clasie is in SAF's radar at all? I know Strooman is/was (or rumored to be) last summer.

Like to come to Hernandez defense here.

Chicharito had a great assist on RVP and maybe even 2 (don't know if it was him or Cleverly). RVP could also assist 1 time to Chich but choose the short ball to the man next to him. Wrong decision and it would have been nice of him to repay for the wonderful assist the Mexican gave to him. I must say that Hernandez improved in a pretty big way. Sometimes I thought RVP was on the ball and in zoom, it turned out to be Hernandez. That says a lot about his on ball skills that have grown. Also the Rooney pass to the offside Hernandez was RVP's fault in a certain way. Hernandez was off side, Rooney looked to RVP, but he did not make the run deep and did not come out of his cover, he looked to Chicharito and then instinct kicks in. I have played that role most of my life (behind the striker giving the killer pass) and I can not tell you how frustrating it is when your options behave stupid in the short window of opportunity you have. As I said, instinct kicks in and he gave it to the one making the run, but was off side. This is where Chicharito has to grow also. Not being off side so often. Other then these moments he had a bit of a quiet game. I think Chicharito makes space for RVP. He is constantly moving and that is work people often don't see. Kagawa I have yet to see doing the same for RVP and he often does not give the ball to RVP. Kagawa has all the tools to be great for RVP, but until now he is not convincing me in his willingness to really work with RVP, so I prefer Hernandez. Now Rooney also starts to feed RVP (he gave another cross into the box RVP could have maybe made, but was just prevented by a defender in front of goal). 3 good assists. RVP is a champ in jealousy management. After a goal he puts the assist maker often in the sunlight. After these 2 goals he did not make Rooney run to him, but he came to Rooney. He did the same to Walcott. This assures smooth relations. I also expect him to invite people from the club to his diner parties and be a good overall force people can lean on.

If Rooney-RVP works, it is another example of a dynamic man behind RVP making him productive. Rooney is more dynamic than Sneijder. Maybe having something similar next to Sneijder is interesting. Afellay comes to mind, but he has trouble adjusting at Schalke.

Clasie is not on SAF's radar. No midfielder is, by the looks of it. How Anderson is running around there is puzzling. I don't think he is very good. Clasie is on Rodgers radar (from Liverpool). I don't know if it is smart for Clasie to move after this season. I would do 1 more Eredivisie season, also to move to a title contender's club. Liverpool would be a typical Clasie club though. Also same club song as Feyenoord and want to play real football now. They also start to have young pacey wingers Clasie could launch. But he is still young and still finds it difficult to play the full 90. He also needs to eat better. I picked up that people saw him "snacking from the wall" a little while ago. He needs to start living like a pro. I know of his training schedule being personalized, but I talk about his eating habits. He has a bit of that puffy look like Janssen from Vitesse, that worry's me.

Having RVP at United brings me back to the years of Ruud. It's much more fun to follow a player able to win something and make a real difference in the quest. My braking point last season came when Wenger played Ramsey behind RVP. Then I really started to think they were taking a piss at him. There has yet to be born a more annoying player in the world than Ramsey. However the question remains, how it will benefit Dutch NT, for otherwise there is little use from this switch.

Urby's goal had some luck to it. For the rest he was pretty anonymous. In the England friendly game Urby came on for Sneijder and was also pretty anonymous. He is a player that could connect with RVP. He needs to become a more dominant player. It's time for that. New generation is knocking on the door.

Nigel is better, but had some pretty stupid passes so far. He is also very much patrolling all the time. Team mates do love to pass to him. That tells it own story. Anita is faster though and also better in pressing. Clasie adds long distribution to that but a bit less speed compared to Anita. Nigel is solid, but sometimes you wish for more. Also from a DM.

If there's any consolation.. Tim Krul is back in action. Didn't do a whole lot (Newcastle defense made a very strong wall), fumbled the ball a couple of times, but nothing concerning. Unfortunately beaten by a deflected shot.

^But I wonder why Anita was not used when Tiote was sent off. I suspect that Pardew really doesn't fancy him despite what he said to bring him over from Amsterdam.

Either Pardew wasn't the one who wanted him, but they got him because he was cheap, or he's your typical manager who doesn't know how to use a footballer like Anita and blames the player for not changing to play the way they want him to.

Also Anita is just as much to blame. The guy is a smart footballer, but he really has no clue what's best for him. His ability to play his primary position is completely wasted because he willingly plays out of position. He needs to get some ego and insist on playing DM, and then work hard in that position in practice in order to be selected. The reason he didn't get recognition from Oranje had nothing to do with playing for Ajax, and had everything to do with the fact that he never played in the position that he was most needed for in Oranje.

I hope he enjoys the larger pay checks while they last.

^Problem is he is not the type of player who will do well in England whereas Tiote is. Anita is a finesse player and they really don't like them over there though that is changing with some new thinking managers. Pardew is old school; Brendan Rodgers of Liverpool is new school. Anita will languish at Newcastle because his game is not suited for that club.

The club decision making of Dutch players must be up there with the worst these days.

We have Dost and de Jong going to 2 German clubs without checking if there is proper delivery from the wing. So they pretty much are too stupid to subscribe to German Bundesliga games and turn on their TV or start their laptop to go on the internet.

Ola John is not able to find out Benfica has a lot of wingers. He is also not able to ask his brother what happens when you leave to early.

Anita does not understand he is a footballer going to a non footballing team who plays 4-4-2 rather than 4-3-3.

You would think I feel bad for them, but their choices are so stupid that I enjoy their struggle at times. This level ignorance needs to be punished. It's not that I knew all these things, but If you make multi million moves, how hard can it be to do a few hours of checking with a neutral person who knows about the club you move to? Simply put, I am amazed about the lack of investigation players put into the club they move to.

@DRB - I agree with 100%. It doesn't take much effort if we fans can figure this stuff out. Unfortunately the agents are only interested in who will pay the most money and not what might be good for the player. I wonder if Anita even asked de Boer what type of club would be good for him (though IMO, de Boer should have offered him the captain's armband to encourage him to stay on).

Luuk de Jong actually talked with Ruud van Nistelrooy about his move. He actually put time and effort into it. However I can not understand how he went on to do some generic questioning (league etc.) rather then go talk with a neutral knowledgeable figure who knows a lot about the specifics of the club and their current team.

Agreed, I have zero sympathy for the players. In fact, players like Anita piss me off. Not only does it ruin their careers (which I don't care about) but it makes the national team worse. Right now we have a worrying shortage of footballing DMs who speed up the game. Anita is one of the few but he's unselectable because of his dumb career moves and his willingness to play in positions where he's shit

Agree and Clasie is dipping this season so far. That has also to do with reasons outside of him (wrong midfielders surrounding him) but also a bit with himself. He was very good for 150 of the 180 minutes against Kiev, maybe even had here and there a fine club game, but overall he is dipping. That's oke. Even VDV had a dip and sooner or later all talents will go through the dip after their rise and name making period. However to come back to Anita. It would have been good for him to be on top of his game now, as he could make minutes in the NT, Clasie going through a dipping period and NT would continue to get used to play football due to footballing DM.

Yep. An Anita playing DM (rather than LB, RB, CB, etc) at Ajax would have been called up to the NT by now or at least very soon. By next summer he would have had offers from clubs that could actually use him properly. Last year he was happy to sign a new contract with Ajax, but then he jumped that the very first opportunity to play in a bigger league. I'm pretty sure before Newcastle came along he wasn't even thinking about a career abroad. Newcastle's offer made him realize that he was good, and suddenly he was too good for Ajax and had to leave
