The man from Switzerland was a true example of what a sportsman should be; Joan Gamper (Winterthur, Switzerland, 1877 -Barcelona, 1930) had success in swimming, rugby, cycling, athletics and above all, football. He arrived inBarcelonain 1898 and practised the sport in the streets of Sant Gervasi and by 1899, football had been born inBarcelona. He founded the club and was captain of the team, however, he did not take on the presidential role until 9 years later. His level was superior to that of most others at the time and left many people marvelling at his skills. It is named in honour of Joan Gamper, a founding member, player and later president of the club and was inaugurated by Enric Llaudet, one of Gamper’s successors as club president. It is one of several summer trophies played for in Spain. Other similar competitions include the Trofeo Teresa Herrera, hosted by Deportivo de La Coruña and the Trofeo Ramón de Carranza, hosted by Cádiz CF. The hosts, FC Barcelona, have won the competition more than any other club. The trophy itself is made of 800 grams of silver over a 10-kilogram marble plinth, along with five micrometres of gold finishing. The club was formed in 1946 from the merger of two existing sports clubs whose roots can be traced back to the 1890s, Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria. Sampdoria currently compete in the Italian Serie A. Both the team name and jersey do reflect this, the first being a combination of the former names, the second incorporating the former teams' colours (blue-white and red-black) in a single design. The team's colours are blue with white, red and black hoops , hence the nickname blucerchiati. Sampdoria play at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, capacity 36,536, which it shares with Genoa's other club, Genoa Cricket and Football Club. The derby between the two teams is commonly known as the Derby della Lanterna. Sampdoria have won the scudetto only once in their history, in the 1991 season. The club has also won the Coppa Italia four times (1985, 1988, 1989, and 1994) and one Italian Super Cup. Their biggest European success came when they won the Cup Winners' Cupin 1990. They also reached the European Cup final in 1992 only to lose against the Spanish side FC Barcelona with an 1–0 score after extra time. FC Barcelona 1-0 US Sampdoria Jordi Alba and Alex Song will for the first time be part of the festivities that take part before the Gamper. It has been reported that David Villa will play for 45 Minutes. Expect a lot of youngsters to take part in this one since the match is going to be played only one day after the match against Sociedad. . . . Visca el Barça
Rafinha, Roberto, Tello, Bartra, Montoya, these guys will be playing in this match for sure. Hopefully Deulofeu, Espinosa, and Araujo (if available) get some minutes too. Looking forward to seeing the team available for this game, should be a nice occasion for the 20th anniversary of that famous night at Wembley.
The "big guns" will also get minutes in this, like they always do. Don't like that this is after the start of the season, but maybe it counts (physically) as a training session, so it's no biggie.
You got nearly all your wishes, so long as Rafinha and perhaps Araujo get subbed in; I am less worried about Tello playing today since he did the full 90 yesterday. Very exciting that Villa gets a start, if he can go 60 (or just 45 as suggested above) and score again that would be huge, then get subbed off for either Rafinha or Araujo. Game on in 40 minutes! Barcelona line-up (official): Pinto - Montoya Bartra Fontas Planas - Espinosa DosSantos S.Roberto - Afellay Villa Deulofeu

Good for Fontàs to get minutes tonight too, along with Villa. Here's the rest of the squad called up from Barça B. Hoping to see some of Deulofeu and Dongou: Oier, Balliu, S. Gómez, David Lombán, Grimaldo, Ilie, Patric, Lobato, Joan Román, Dongou, G. Deulofeu, Araujo.
game is not on for another 17 minutes, if it is not on Sky Sports you can try these: Streams Barcelona-Sampdoria: http://bit.ly/MHnANz http://bit.ly/MHnB44http://bit.ly/MHnEwQ http://bit.ly/MHnFAR http://bit.ly/LYIF5q
Thanks, I was looking for that info. I forget whether subs are unlimited or limited to three; I think it is the former so hopefully we can see nearly all these players play. No Song is OK but what is up with Rafinha not available? Agreed it is great to see Fontas back - there was a sale to QPR rumor today for a decent price but I think he wants to earn his place here.
Maxilopezian "Church" Lopez's surprising change of luck from being a criticised forward in River Plate to being signed by world's giants FC Barcelona made him an Internet meme in his native Argentina. Satirical blogs were created lobbying for his inclusion in the Argentinian squad for the 2006 World Cup. After the Argentinian elimination of the cup (without Lopez getting any caps at all) the nature of the meme changed to a series of reasons explaining his lack of time play on Barcelona with hyperbolic claims about Lopez's virility, skilfulness and a supposed affair with the wife of Barcelona's coach Frank Rijkaard which closely resembled Chuck Norris Facts. In interviews, Lopez has stated that he is ok with this unexpected following and the Church of the "White Drogba". (As he is known after missing a crucial Penalty kickfor River against Arch-enemies Boca Juniors on the same week Didier Drogba missed one against Egypt in the final of 2006 African Cup of Nations) [10][11]
We've looked bland in attack and in danger at the back every time they get a chance. Roberto, Villa, and Espinosa doing well, Planas has done ok apart from a couple of bad crosses, while Bartra & Fontas don't compliment each other very well as a pair in my opinion. Neither of them are secondary defenders, both like to play the ball from the back. Montoya not looking too comfortable out there.
^^^ Gil, are you outing yourself as Maxi Lopez's biographer on Wikipedia? Great work! Are you working on anyone else? Oleguer? Ezquerro?
Hopefully, and not at the kids we had out there. We lost 0-1, it was a major difference in performance to yesterday. Most of these kids aren't ready for the step up, they still have so much to learn. I really don't think Eusebio is helping them a lot in the B team, we might need a new coach.
Well there is a guy in NYC, recently retired, who had some success running Barca B a few years ago... Also, what is Luis Enrique doing post Roma? I've heard others complain about Eusebio too, I feel I don't watch enough Barca B to have a firm opinion.
Pep is taking a break from football. It'd be nice to see him back at Barca B but I don't see it happening any time soon. Luis Enrique is a good call. Haven't read upon anything about him since his departure from Roma back in June, I guess he might be available. I also wonder why we didn't just install Oscar Garcia as B-team coach. He did some exceptional work with our Juvenil A in the last two seasons but now he's coaching Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel after his contract with Barca wasn't renewed. I don't watch Barca B much these days either, but whenever I do, we just don't look very good at all when we lose possession, the defense hardly has the cover it needs, and there isn't much of a cutting edge in the team whenever we actually do have the ball. Without Deulofeu now and Soriano last year, I think this team could have finished closer to the relegation spots. I hope it doesn't get to that point but the squad is big enough and perfectly good enough to finish in one of the higher positions in the league (not 3rd/4th, more like 7th/8th). I think the current team is probably better than the one Lucho led to third place in 10/11 but it doesn't have the right guy to manage and develop these players. Eusebio was Rijkaard's assistant manager as well remember, and he hardly ever pointed out the mistakes Frank made in those two disastrous years. I don't think he's cut out for Barcelona management level.
