exciting, lived in Seattle now since 1978, my parents are from flushing meadows, cant stand the NY Soft Drinks, so this will give me a team to root for there. I was confused where they tried to explain that the League is financing this stadium? Anyone explain?

According to a New York Post Article, MLS will pay for the stadium. Usually the club pays for it (or at least most of it) Like AEG did with Galaxy and Dynamo did with BBVA. I don't think any tax payers money will be used, unlike red bull playpen but someone correct me if im wrong

again, someone can correct me, but I've never heard of any league for any sport in America that builds a stadium for a specific team

MLS is the only single entity league in America. MLS is also probably the only league in America that was built by the front office instead of by the teams that pulled it all together.

Ugh, this is so stupid. When the league folds because of the MASSIVE 300 mil debt and the NYRB fold, this will be called Garber's Folly.

What success is that? Other than a trophy with Mickey Mouse ears what have they accomplished?

There will be at least one casualty from this deal, and my money is on the Red Bulls. Why not promote a team that already exists and already has a fan base like Orlando? This is just infuriating.

Probably because Garber and Co. have stated they want to get to 20 teams and then stand pat on that number for a while. Orlando or Queens. It is what it is.

The league won't be out $300m. They will get that and a nice expansion fee from the new I/O.

And why would NYRB fold? They will get a natural rival that they have been begging MLS for. That comment is like saying (circa 2010) Toronto FC will fold when Montreal comes into MLS.

It is a massive gamble by MLS to pay this much for a stadium for one team. A brand new team with no existing foothold in the market. Worst case scenario is that the new team attract little new fans and takes half RB fans which would leave two unsuccessful teams in the area and a league up to its neck in debt. Best case scenario is that all these ethnic football lovers in Queens that we keep hearing about will both fall in love with MLS and have the bucks to buy season tickets while the RB's both keep and build on their fanbase.

My guess/hope is somewhere in between. History tells fans of the league that a lot of immigrant communites consider MLS inferior to the league that they already love and that ethnic pandering is only ever a short term solution if even. I just hope that paying for this stadium doesn't hurt the league!

You're wrong. RBA sits on city owned land but was built with RB money. The public did pay to clean up the former factory land before RBA was built.

So they're going to get the 300 mil back for the stadium AND whatever the franchise fee is? People want to own an MLS team that badly?

NYRB will fold because they can't fill their stadium now, fans in the city proper will likely switch to the new team. Toronto and Montreal are 6 hours away, no one is going to just up and switch because of that. Its 40 minutes between Harrison and Flushing. Not comparable.

RB is a long long way from folding. They have invested WAY to much to just pick up and leave so soon.

Besides, is RB's attendance really all that under expectation? Why would they all of a sudden expect to sell 25,000 tickets a match? Especially this season with a schedule jam packed with odd starting times (I think we only had 1 Saturday night match all season)

In other news, players salary cap is still ~$3million, and there are some players that still earn ~$40k annual.

Hmmmmmm....A soccer Specific Stadium and Complex in the same area as Citi-Field, and Arthur Ashe Stadium (US Open Tennis Complex) and close to public transit. Let's see, a 25K-30K seat state of the art Soccer stadium............I wonder how many international friendlies and WCQ's will be played there? That's a nice little cash flow. Think about it..... most CONCACAF teams can play their friendlies and even their WCQ's at this new stadium. Add in revenue from international club friendlies, and the stadium will pay for itself in a few years. Another revenue stream would come from concerts as well every now and then.

I'm fairly confident that 2 soccer teams, each having 25K seat stadiums in a market that has approx. 8 MILLION people will be able to sustain themselves and garner enough support.

In other news, the league is going to get more money in a television contract with another NYC area club in the fold.

You want the salary cap and the veteran minimum to go up? Then you'll need more television money. Pretty simple, eh? And that is what Garber is trying to do.

That was the whole point of this. To get this done before 2014 when MLS's television contract are up.

I won't mention the name again, but expect NY2 to go BIG on the celebrity and high profile attachments, even including some as limited partners. It will be a specific strategy.
This will NOT be a midwest MLS team, and will appeal specifically to the NYC media complex.
