You said you want to see Adu start over Gomez, and that you'd like our chances of beating mexico. I was responding to the second part, saying that while with that lineup we may have at least a decent chance, we won't see that lineup.

He's not starting because he's not even called up.

Adu has 5 caps since the end of 2008.

many posters' don't want to here it but Adu is going nowhere and probably is not considered a real option for the NT by many of the coaches. He might get the occasional call but this book is out on this dude and it's great ball skills but not much else

There is a chance we won't that lineup just like any lineup listed right now since we do not know the squad going into the Azteca.

Adu disappeared/faded during the Gold Cup final after the bright start. Mexico also had to sub a defender out due to injury.

Adu faded/disappeared? The whole damn team faded. Particularly Jones and Bradley. Dempsey and Donovan were the ones that disappeared. Adu was the cause of our best attacking patterns that whole game. Howard, imo had a terrible game too.

Yeah, Aduesque...not trying to pile on....but I didn't understand a single word you just said. Adu is not the answer. I'll grant that he may be a tiny part of the solution...but that's it. Very tiny.

One thing Adu has going for him is his age. Gomez is the better player but for how much longer???

True, the whole team disappeared. Adu is an average MLS player though.

I am not in favor AT ALL of taking players away from their training camps to start their
season. A trip to Mexico/playing would be totally disruptive, and could even cost some their
starting positions or making the squad (since many of our players are on the fringe in Europe).

So, I think the mix should be MLS players, Mexican league, and a couple European players that are 'safe' in their club situations:

GK: Howard, MLS keeper 1 (Sean Johnson?)
D: Bocanegra, Goodson, Demerit, Castillo, Gonzales (maybe too early?)/Cherundolo
M: Torres, Beckerman, Corona, Edu, Beasley, C. O'Brien, Lade
F: Donovan, Gomez, Wondolowski, Pontius, Bruin

    STARTING LINEUP

    Howard
    D: Cherundolo- Goodson/Bocanegra- Demerit- Castillo
    DM: Beckerman- Edu
    M: Donovan- Torres- Beasley
    F: Gomez

SUBS: As many as possible, given the altitude. Give the younger kids minutes at the end.

** the more I think about it....WHY are we playing this game? (terrible timing).
I don't think Klinsmann thought this out...it should have been a friendly in the US
vs. a mid-tier opponent. I guess there is some value in the kids playing late in the 2nd half
as icebeakers, but this could be embarrassing result for US.

You do realize Philly has one of the worst offenses in the league right?

I should not have left off Eddie Johnson. He definitely deserves a callup based on his play this year.

Hit the nail on the head. Crazy time to book an Azteca match.
Anyhow, JK will bring only 18 or 19, including Dempsey since his club position has not even been established at this time.

yes, there's never a great time visit Azteca.

but getting the experience (for the players and staff) in a friendly is (hopefully or ideally) going to be a positive contribution for the US team when they'll have to go there (very, very likely in 6-14 months) and play a competitive game and try to earn some points.

One of my major frustrations with Klinsmann has been the lack of variation in who he has called up/given minutes to. So what I would really love to see is USMNT squad with NONE of the following: Bocanegra, Dempsey, Bradley, Jones, Howard, Cherundolo

Yes, the time will come when the most important thing will be helping our best players play their best together. But this is not that time. He should be cultivating a system into which appropriate role players (be they B level or C) can be inserted.

Hmm: so what does that leave me? I guess I have to go back to YA thread and keep track of who is up to what with their clubs. So an incomplete answer from me.

Plus I am torn by always wanting to beat El Tri....

Well, i'd say Boca & Deuce are unlikely anyways with their current club situations. However, this isnt the time to be taking out every key player for no apparent reason & integrate new ones. Jones, Howard, Bradley, & CLo will likely be in Mexico. I do believe we will be missing a bunch anyways, like Deuce & Boca, that have similar club situations to deal with so you will probably see more of a variety this time. I dont see Cameron, Edu, Dempsey, or Boca being involved.

I like the idea of not taking guys who are not safe in their club situations or at new clubs (Cameron, Bradley, etc), though we may certainly differ about who is safe and who isn't.

Agree we take 18 or 19, but I can't seem to get below 20. My list of 'safe' Euros and deserving North American leaguers:

    GK: Howard, Hamid
    Fullback: Cherundolo, F. Johnson, Castillo
    Centerbacks: Goodson, Bocanegra, DeMerit, Ream
Midfield: Jones, Torres, Beckerman, Edu, Beasley
    Mid/Fwd: Dempsey, Donovan, Pontius
    Forward: Gomez, Wondo, E. Johnson
