I never bother with checking MLS ratings, usually because I don't want to cringe at how bad they may be. Though I still don't think ratings are as big a deal as people make out, with the league still nowhere near maturity. MLS obviously feels this needs to improve drastically, but I question how realistic that growth is in the near future. To me it seems the growth in ratings will come naturally with time as the league ages.

Does anyone have a rough average of ratings for each of the sports for regular season matches? I mean, what are we aiming for here? I think NFL is somewhere between 7-12m on average right? But I can't imagine the other leagues are anywhere near that.

tv money will play a huge part in dictating the pace the league grows.

and that is why the league should do everything they can to keep Beckham involved. I argue
that he would be the PERFECT person to own the new Cosmos and even play there for 1-2 years as a swansong to his career. This plan would need to get going now (start 2014 season), and Beckham would be part of an investment group. But to launch the 2nd NYC franchise, MLS needs to leverage
everything they got (Beckham's brand, his playing, COSMOS moniker, etc) now.

Looks like 60,000+ for Beckham/Seattle match- the 15th games on the road for Galaxy that will have sold out (every single match). Beckham's magic/brand is alive and well.

The tv money will be monumentally higher if MLS can keep Beckham tied to this league when negotiations roll around

Well, yes, if you think explosive ratings growth is possible, that would lead to explosive growth in the league overall. But I tend to, like Zxcv, doubt that premise.

On a % basis, it is possible to get strong gains.

MLS went from getting $0 for rights, to now 10s of millions and the ratings have remained small for years.

With careful packaging with World Cup + other friendlies and USMNT games, MLS rights could increase dramatically in $$$ rights captured if well negotiated and if MLS can continue to make the case for growth (which is much more believable now- in my opinion- then before all these SSSs, increase in attendance and Beckham).

What did NHL get from NBC Sports Network for their rights and what are their ratings numbers? That's a much better proxy now than years ago.

Come 2014 if things goes as well as now with NBCSN and ESPN ratings, fetching 100 million dollar combined TV contract would be a possibility .

i don't think we are going to see explosive growth in tv money, ratings or the league overall.

i do think we have a shot at seeing ratings climb at a respectable pace, which will help the money for tv rights climb at a respectable pace, which will help league growth overall grow at a respectable pace.

The writer of the article says that about MLS, not Ronaldo himself.

What I find interesting about Japan is how keen they were on getting the building blocks right, whatever the collateral. Changes to developmental strategies is often a laborious task, without guarantee of success. There is a lot of resistance within the old guard; you only need to look at England (or dare I say the US) as examples of selfish interests overriding the need for change. Yet they somehow managed to implement nationwide change because they obviously realized that they could learn so much from others. They managed it in one generation. Lets hope ours doesnt take longer.
