Just a little more info here as you're apparently not up to speed on the NASL. The Eddies are in the process of upgrading the seating at the facility they moved into this season. The good news is that where they are playing this year far exceeds where they were last year, and they have a pretty good chance of an even better stadium situation in the near future as Edmonton was selected as a site for the 2015 Women's World Cup.

In Puerto Rico, the Islanders have been playing in an alternate facility so far this year due to major renovations to Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium, their normal home stadium. The stadium renovations will be completed in time for an international friendly August 15th with Puerto Rico hosting Spain. The Islanders will then be moving back into the stadium for the remainder of the NASL season the following weekend.

Obviously the return of the Cosmos brand will have a little more effect in South Florida and Tampa, but make no mistake it will be a good thing for every team in the league. Yes it's D2, but as you'll soon come to see, every advantage you can get at this level is important. Every extra butt in a seat you can accomplish is meaningful. This looks to be a very positive development for all parties invovled. The NASL gets probably two years (that's what I'd put my money on) of being able to lay claim to the most storied brand in North American soccer making its return to the field after all these years in their league.

For the Cosmos organization they get to take that first step of getting the Cosmos back to the highest level of soccer by building and preparing this team, and most importantly waiting for a stadium situation to really get going. By actually playing competitive games you have a far greater engine to re-establish the brand then just having some old players give some quotes and tell you to go to a website to buy stuff.

For you the fans, you get to do what you've all been saying you wanted to do for a long time - go and watch the New York Cosmos play games. Is the situation ideal? Nope. But it's the first step to where you want it to be, and from what the owners say it's only the first step to where they want to be too. If you love soccer, and you want to see the Cosmos get past this first step, it seems pretty clear what you all have to do - go support them, in LI, Queens, wherever they are. Don't be like the soccer fans we have down here in Miami that whine about how far it is to Ft. Lauderdale (30-40 minute drive), or that the games aren't in the "city." If you guys show up in good numbers for the Cosmos in the NASL, it's only going to speed up the process of getting to the next level.

I say welcome to the Cosmos, looking forward to renewing a rivalry I enjoyed as a kid. I know it'll be a short stay for you in the NASL as you build to bigger things, but at the same time I hope the Strikers are on that same path, albeit a longer road there than the Cosmos will take. It was very nostalgic for me this year when the Rowdies came into Lockhart for the first time in decades as the Tampa Bay Rowdies. It will be just as special when the Cosmos do the same next year. I encourage all of you to get out and support the Cosmos, not just because I know it will help speed your way to the next level, but just for the love of the game.

Btw, FCNY is now in the 4th level NPSL and play their games at Mitchell Field. That is very close to Hofstra. Recently they caused a stir with a "Romney" political message on their kit. They removed it when they found out that it was in conflict with a Fifa regulation.

First off, Smoke and Mirrors is right on with his post.

Years ago I remember watching the Metrostars in Giants Stadium, very early on and so desperately wanted to see soccer make it here, to see MLS make it. Back then it wasnt a sure thing that the league would go beyond 4 years so so. But I remember going to the games, even though they were inconvienent and not in NYC where i wnated them to be. I remember standing in the stadium section with about 60 other guys and girls that were really into the team, and in a 80K stadium I felt we probably looked a bit ridiculous.

But in the back of my mind then was the thought "If we don't support this, who will?" And we don't will I even have another chance to watch live pro soccer, meaningful matches in my life. Obviously the answer to that question, thankfully, was yes the league will make it, and your ground level grassroots support eventually gave way to acceptance and legitimacy.

I say this because I feel the NY Cosmos in the NASL is in many ways a carbon copy of those early Metrostars days. Here you have fought to get a team playing pro soccer and now that you have it...there are a million excuses you can make to not support it fully. Its in Hofstra! Its not MLS! The field is TURF!! Etc!

But really, you have to ask yourself, if you won't support this, who will? Especially considering this effort is being made SPECIFICALLY to build an infastructure and built in fanbase to better leverage an MLS expansion partnership/bid if and when MLS gets their Corona stadium. (Given MLS is the one doing this, with their BoG of the weathiest men in America I feel its a strong liklihood)

You have to give this a chance, and more imnportantly, you have to put up or shut up. The time has come now for you to put your money where your mouth is and get stuck in and start doing the "supporter" type stuff that needs to be done to build some legitimacy to this club. Organize, start up a "Metrofanatic" tyoe site, start being a supporters club and stop talking about being one.

Personally, I am on board no matter what. I can't in good faith spend my time always talking about wanting another option in the area to support and then when the chance presents itself make excuses for not getting behind it. I supported MLS back when nobody was, back when other soccer fans made fun of you and the league while they sat on their barstools at 8am watching the Premiership. It was worth every ********ing minute.

So if its Hofstra, while not ideal, its better than nothing at all and sitting on my hands waiting for something to happen. The gauntlet has been dropped, its time to put up or shut up.'m ********ing in.

You are right. Great job right there.

It is not ideal but as long as they are focused on MLS - which is what we really want - no reason not to support and just bite the bullet

I know MLS has done extensive studies on this subject and they have identified (kind of obviois really) that Long Island is a major untapped market for professional soccer as well as pretty much the majority of Queens County and parts of Kings County and Manhattan.

This move is actually the best possible oveof the realistic options out there. With respect to NYC2 in MLS, the league has come to the conclusion that they will never get the expansion bid they seek unless there is a legitimate soccer stadium solution similar to what AEG had when Red Bull came into the league in 2006. They know the league with their collection of billionare owner/investors and their bankroll they are in a much bette rpsoition to do the stadium lifitng and political cock stoking. Nothing, i mean NOTHING is going to happen on the NYC2 front until that issue is fullresolved by the league.

So your options are do you do nothing until then and wait and hope you can get in on the game with just owning a brand name alone or do you try and position yourself as a brand that also has a built in infastructre, fanbase and soccer team to leverage into being part of a potential NYC2 oenership group in the fututre?

They know Long Island will be vital in securing a fanbase roll in the market and from the market data out there there seems to be an untapped reserve of a potential fanbase to cultivate. So they will build that part as much as they can and do what they can do to get as amny people from the bouroghs on board. I suspect they will be lookign at ways to make the public commute to Hofstra more palatable.

Its the correct strategy to take in my opinion and if the only major draw back is plaing on turf in Hofstra and not hitting a homerun in their first at bat with city dwellers...then that is something people need to just suck up and be patient at the plate cause you suspect that meatball hanging over the plate is coming a few at bats later.

Well if you think watching a game at Hofstra isnt ideal...let me tell you all about being at Giants Stadium with only other 2000 fans.

He has already weighed in with quotes and claims to be 100% behind this move, in typical Clive fashion he claims this is what HE would have done if he was calling the shots.

    I really loved this post.
You're right. It feels SOOO much like the early Metro days.

We're going to have to travel too much and we're gonna lose a lot more games than Pele, Beckenbauer & Chinaglia, but that's what it's all about if you wanna be part of building something from the ground up.

Invest yourself now and imagine how you'll feel ten years from now. Much more satisfied than the newbies sitting next to you in our spectacular NYC stadium. It'll mean more to you.

To some extent, that's the tragedy behind RedBull. So many of us burned so many calories to build american soccer, only to get this weird plastic billboard laid on top of our team.

    That won't happen this time.

We can make this work if we want to.

What about the ballpark at Coney Island as a temp stadium? Capacity at 7,500 is about right for NASL and it's on the subway.

We had a meeting with the Borough of Brooklyn years ago and they said that the stadium could not fit Soccer - would be a good draw down there.

Hofstra Stadium was designed for football. How wide is it? If you're going to have to go narrow anyway, then maybe Columbia (the football stadium, not the soccer field) isn't so bad an option. It's only three blocks from a subway stop. Or is Columbia so rich it can afford to turn its nose up?

Is Van Cortlandt Stadium, at 242nd and Broadway, too small? I'm sure that Gaelic Park, on the other side of Broadway, is too small.

PCFC told me tehre is some construction going on around Columbia which is eating up parking and the locals are pissed about - so that could rule that location out

    Gaelic park is too small

Hoftsra was built for football but the school no longer has a football program.

You're preaching to the choir man. They actually have two subway lines and a Metro-North stop. In terms of public transit, out of the proposed options, CU is the best. But Columbia doesn't need money. It just built a building near their soccer stadium, which caused some community opposition.

Apparently the Queens/LI market is the only focus. So people from there need to step up their game for the Cosmos.

Right. As a person who follows the local politics of the area, I'm pretty sure CU wouldn't be open to it...and the politicians wouldn't either. I bet Hofstra is offering the most for the Cosmos.

Suffolk County here. I can't speak for many but I can tell you that I am already registered to get the call for tickets, and I've managed to talk a few others into registering too. I will also be ready to make the move to Flushing Meadow when it happens.

@ Smoke & Mirrors, you are the man! You hit all the points needed hitting here in your post. Cosmos fans and their supporters are in a unique position to will this NASL Cosmos team into MLS reality. If anyone question that, just look at what the fans and supporters (Sons Of Ben) done to get an MLS team into Philadelphia. By going out and supporting this NASL Cosmos, it will show Don Garber and the MLS that the 20th team has to be called Cosmos and no other name will suffice! The most recent debate is will this 20th team be named Cosmos or another team by a different name, strong support of this NASL Cosmos will show Garber if he wants success with his 20th MLS New York franchise, it will have to be called Cosmos and if that 20th team isn't called Cosmos it would be because the fans and supporters failed to show Garber and MLS something the league couldn't refuse. You the loyal Cosmos fans and supporters are in te drivers seat and it's you who are in 100% control of this destiny.
