I've been searching for a basic primer on the modern NASL's format. Salary cap, roster size, etc Anyone have a link? If there's no cap, does this ownership group have the cash to really make a go of it?
On MLS website: http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/07/12/garber-nasl-cosmos-still-picture-nyc-expansion
None of the major networks mentioned anything about today's Cosmos news in their sports segment at 6pm. I changed those channels vigorously from channel 2, 4, 5, and 7 . nothing.
You'd be hard pressed to find ANY soccer news on the networks. MLS Cup even comes in as an afterthought, usually after NFL and NBA (but before NHL).
if you look at the NASL website - they are pumped lol I wonder how they feel about Garber going around saying the Cosmos could still come to MLS. Kind of raining on their parade
To follow up on that chat we had - read the email finally - yes - the quote we are looking for is there "The Cosmos have a celebrated history with the NASL and with its rebirth in recent years, our entry was the natural first step for our return. We look forward to playing the competitive and entertaining style of soccer that you will expect from us as we take on some our biggest traditional rivals like the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and Tampa Bay Rowdies. Our ultimate goal is to play at the very highest level and we feel today's announcement is the first step in that direction."
You expected this on a major news network. You have to be trolling. I wonder how long before we hear about the details of where the team is playing and when some people will be put in management positions. I don't expect any players for this team any time soon because that's not how the NASL works but a coach or a GM would make for some interesting news.
There's no salary cap in the 2nd or 3rd division. Teams are run on a budget, of course. Most NASL teams are probably between $1.5M and $2.5M, compared to the MLS average of around $4.5(?) Is it definitely Hofstra? I hope not.
I wonder if Gio will still be in his role and maybe even coach this team - would be a good fit AmeriSnob - nothing official has been announced but that is what Jack Bell has been reporting and he has been pretty accurate with the cosmos. Its not an ideal location at all - if its a step to Queens (with the stadium for MLS) then all will have to make the most of it. If its long term NASL and Long Island...just being honest...i dont see it being successful.
Gio would be a good choice to be the face of this franchise. He's a local guy and has a lot of ties to soccer to this area. Would be a good choice I think. At the end of the day this is still an NASL team so people need not get too excited. Second division soccer in the US has never been stable and especially if this team is in Hofstra I don't see this team drawing more than the average NASL team. And obviously this team will be constructed of players of NASL quality.
Agree 100 percent - thats why it has to be a stepping stone. Fans will make the effort if its just for a few years - but if there is no end game in Queens - many of the fans - including our guys - will not support it seamus obrien is saying they are trying for MLS though. Just have to see if hes blowing more smoke or if this guy is for real. Everything I have heard is that this guy is legit but honestly, we all have been burnt before http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/soccerblog/the_post_sits_with_new_york_cosmos_fXOa3VsQDG3EDjCEoijRyN Like these quotes: “The model presented us with a great opportunity to grow out the brand a build a really strong foundation on the first steps in this new journey. This move now gives us the best chance of success for the long term. We’re playing to win at the highest level possible, and when we get there, it’s here to stay for generations.’’ “I think (Garber) understands the reason why we’ve started where we’re going to start,’’ said O’Brien, who spoke to Garber today. “I hope to maintain a good open dialogue with him. Who knows what happens in the future?’’
Well at the rate that Red Bull get rid of there young players we could potentially field a full team by 2013. See Hot-Kassel-Hertzog-Lassiter-Schnieder-Da Luz-Chin-Garcia-Tchani-Hall-Zimmerman-Traynor. Then we can beat them in the Open cup with there own rejects- sorry was looking ahead !
It's hard to test the market for a NYC "urban" team (as MLS said) by not having the team in NYC or by a subway line. I think there are 4-5 better options for stadiums in NYC than Hofstra.
And ideally for them they follow the Seattle/Portland/Montreal model and establish their brand and then if they get the major hurdles done (you know, the stadium) and the ownership group is settled upon then they find themselves in MLS. And at the end of the day, until those hurdles are cleared, you can't try to take what happens with this team and try to project it to what will happen when they get to MLS.
For the fans sake I would hope that you find some good players not some scrubs like you mentioned there. Some of those guys aren't even at the NASL level now.
Hofstra would be terrible IMO but that's what it looks like it will be. Cause then it's a LI team not an NYC team. St. John's is a small venue and is a bit out there. Where else can they play? Columbia University? I don't know about the logistics of that venue.
Two subway lines and a Metro North stop. I think it would be great. But reality comes. Columbia is building a new structure near the soccer field. It has worsened the parking situation and naturally angered the loudest Inwood residents. I can't imagine them being open to the idea, as much as the infrastructure is there.
Yea then Hofstra is the only viable spot...which as LKGF mentioned - is not a good spot. Has to be short term
I really hope CU will be available. But I doubt it. The PDL team played a few games at the soccer stadium. I understand trying to get the LI crowd, so if it is in Hofstra, LI needs to come out HUGE! 100% NYC can't be relied on.
The only positive of Hofstra is that you can get the LI crowd behind it and then move to Queens. The goal is the Queens - LI market apparently.
