Real Salt Lake has a youth presence in Arizona. But my guess (and it's just a guess) is the reason "Real" is in their name is for the same reason there's a Real Salt Lake and a Sporting Kansas City and all the FCs. Europosing.
Yeah, I know, but I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to start a minor league club in PHX or Northern AZ. They're already committed to Casa Grande and Tucson, so I can't see why they wouldn't put there minor league team in PHX or in Salt Lake City conditions (Flagstaff/Prescott)
I can give the reason why it's REAL. It's not for sponsorship reasons, nor affiliation reasons, nor anything else that would benefit the club. The reason is simply because the owner and his family want it to be Real Phoenix FC. A group of us petitioned the owner to change the name and he flat out refused saying his family wants it that way and has spent two years on the project.
Absolutely. If I were to be starting a team, the name would be mandated by what benefited the club most. Whether that be a sponsor name or something that represents the region or whatever gains the most. .............
Than explain Real Esteli. I didn't think Honduras was part of Europe. I consider Real Phoenix acceptable with RSL because these cities were in Spanish territories at some point during there existence. Just like how DC and Toronto were once British territories.
I'm talking about North American clubs and (particularly) American fans. I don't know if Hondurans practice Europosing or not. That's not my concern. I have no knowledge of why Real Esteli or any other club anywhere outside of Europe is called "Real." I'm sure there are teams called Real in several places you could name. I wasn't talking about them. It's less about the historical accuracy and more about the reasons, which (on these shores, I have no idea about Honduras) tend to be "so we appear to be authentic, because 'authentic' now means 'something people in Europe do.'"
Maybe it is because The United States did not pioneer this sport like they have with others. If they invented the sport, than they get to tell the world how things are properly done. It is also not something that people in Europe do, but rather many clubs around the world. This is a world sport, and not just a European sport.
We're not telling the world how to do things, we're running an American/Canadian league that caters to an American/Canadian audience. If other countries don't like how we run things, that's fine, it's not there league.
I have no idea about those requirements, but I know the Charlotte Eagles play at a local school. The stadium has seating for about 1,000 people. People can sit in the grass that surrounds 3/4 of the field. You might be able to squeeze 5,000 people into the stadium, but a vast majority of them would not be in 'seats.'
The Eagles were grandfathered in, the 5k requirement is relatively new. As an aside, 5,000 is a strange requirement for a league that averages around 3.7K
Harrisburg's yard doesn't seat 5,000, either, and it's not that new a requirement. USL minimum standards for stadium size go way back. Maybe I have the stuff from way back in the day, they were different from PDL to D3 to D2. Some of them may have been tweaked over the years. Anyway, with today's announcement of a USL Pro team for Phoenix, I'll be interested to see where they plan on playing. There isn't a good place I can think of.
Don't even think that. The Eagles have been around since (I believe) 1993. I can't remember what third-division stadium capacity standards were in 1999, but I think it was 1 or 2k for the PDL and at least 3k for what was then the D3 Pro League. In Charlotte's case, it was either play at one of those places or (probably) don't play. They've long been rumored to potentially move into some new complex once it gets built, but I don't think it's anywhere near completion. Pittsburgh's new yard also won't be 5k. I also can't see where there's a 5k place in Phoenix that isn't a spring training ballpark.
