https://twitter.com/ATLSilverbacks/status/219611428544458753 Announcement Monday....Heard Eric Wynalda's name thrown around. http://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/vwnjp/coincidence_eric_wynalda_and_the_atlanta/
Yup! Ya'll get Eric Wynalda. http://www.insidemnsoccer.com/2012/07/02/eric-wynalda-named-coach-of-the-atlanta-silverbacks/ He was great with SD Flash, managed to get Cal FC wins against Hammerheads and Portland, and I think he'll be a great fit.
They could hardly do worse than the professional players that have racked up a 1-8-5 record to this point, despite not driving trucks.
As a long standing 'Backs fan I am starting to wonder what it will take to get this team gelling. I thought that Traffic comming in last year would be a boost, but it hasn't amounted to much so far.
The Big problem with the team it is Traffic, them just one fill the team with their players, letting the coach with a little room to pick players, last year I offer them some players and them tell me the team had not interest on them , that them good with the team that them have at that momment despite them haven't win any games at that momment, and about my players one was pick inmidiatly by the PR Isalnders and now it is with the El Salvador Champion CD Aguila and the oder one playing on Estonian First Division, so I guess them don't was that back as the people on the Silverbacks said . I hope Traffic put their hands out of the team and let Wynalda picks his players and do it his job
Traffic is the problem? Traffic is the only reason the Silverbacks even exist. There wouldn't be a team without Traffic. Boris Jerkunica already pulled the plug back in 2009. Only Traffic agreeing to come in brought back the team to play in 2011. They are clearly not the problem. If the Silverbacks have a problem its first name begins with B and ends with S.
Silverbacks definitely need someone with deeper pockets. Traffic is heavily subsidizing this team. Boris makes all his money from renting out the park and youth leagues. The Silverbacks have always been bottom feeders because Boris doesn't have the $$ to sign good players. Hopefully Wynalda can succeed and make this franchise attractive to potential investors. I fear that Wynalda will just be with us till the end of the season and then bolt to the new San Diego NASL franchise. San Diego will be owned by fellow Fox Soccer analyst Warren Barton.
Does anyone miss Jason Smith yet? He did every job they had including GM, Coach, travel arrangements, secretary and he did it well. The guys they have hired since do not have a clue. This person they just hired is in over his head. Just watch and see.
The Silverbacks should have kept Smith on the payroll when they folded. He would have given them stability when they started back and they would be a contending team now. The sad thing is that the owners realize this now but it is too late to get him back.
I didn't realize until I looked it up that the Silverbacks have only made the playoffs twice and once they were finalists. Wow. Read up. Wynalda won't even be with you until the end of the season, he's said he goes back to Fox duties in August and plans to have helped hire a permanent coach by then. Also, there is no "new San Diego NASL franchise." And Warren Barton is not worth $20M to be able to own such a franchise. The San Diego Flash of the NPSL has expressed its interest in becoming an NASL team at some point. There is no guarantee. They've even gone out of their way to say there is no guarantee. And USSF DII standards say somebody has to be the primary owner, with a worth of $20M. That ain't Warren Barton. And they're just a few investors shy in their quest to be publicly owned by a lot of people. And by "just a few investors shy," I mean, "the last time I looked, they had 41 people who had ponied up."
It's true. Those of us in SD are jumping the gun enough without help from those of ya'll in Atlanta Every article I've seen talking about his time as coach has said he's out after mid-August. For example: http://www.majorleaguesoccertalk.co...terim-head-coach-of-atlanta-silverbacks-16411 http://www.indyweek.com/triangleoff...cks-and-discusses-us-soccer-coaching-carousel
"The interim label attached to Wynalda’s post is quite literal. He intends to coach all the Silverbacks’ matches through mid-August, when he hopes to have a new full-time manager in place. Indeed, Wynalda already has an unnamed candidate in mind. After that, he will return to his Fox Soccer duties, although he hopes to remains a consultant for Atlanta." Flash release of June 26: http://www.prlog.org/11909622-flash-look-to-the-future-and-second-tier-pro-soccer-with-the-nasl.html "The Flash who successfully defended its 2011 Conference title with an 8-0 home win against the Phoenix Monsoon over the weekend, requested information about the NASL in a letter from CEO; Clent Alexander to NASL Commissioner David Downs. The San Diego Flash organization sees this as the first step in opening a constructive, ongoing dialogue with U.S. Soccer’s second tier division about the possibilities of becoming the league’s first West Coast representative. “While this is only an expression of interest and no guarantee of the club making that transition, we hope that this serves as a notice to the U.S. Soccer community that San Diego is ready for pro soccer. Putting the city of San Diego on the professional soccer map is a high priority for our Partnership Group.” Alexander said.
Yes we miss Jason. Last year his college team was in town for a tourney and some of us went out to see him. I hear rumor he was sighted at a Silverbacks game back in June. Just as a fan though. I still have not met the new GM so he is still in the no comment stage for me.
Although it doesnt say it anywhere on the site yet, you guys just signed midfielder Milton Blanco. He was the 2011 national PDL MVP. Played professionally for a few MLS clubs 3 or 4 years back before playing a season in the lower leagues then returning to PDL for a season or two w the Fresno Fuego. Got signed by Charlotte in the USL PRO and was released, and now you guys have him. Good player very very creative
I think they played with a purpose tonight. Most of the starters had been with the team all season, but they played better. I also liked the look of Barrera and Cruz. In a short time they will present a great addition to the team.
I know I'm coming in late in the game (no pun intended), but in regard to their record at that time, it is ironic to note that when the Ruckus went down for the last time in 1998 (before being resurrected), the replacement players of A-League Atlanta (or as I called them "Team; Soccer; One Each" ) actually did better than the team they replaced; most of their 7 wins that year (I think it was 7; Kurt might know better than me) came from the replacement crew.
IF memory serves, the game that they "faxed it in" for was the 6/13/98 game at Long Island, and the Rough Riders rounded up a dozen or so local guys, put them in uniforms and called them the Atlanta Ruckus (and Long Island won 5-0). They were 2-9 going into that game and lost the first four after the league takeover (if it was the game at Long Island....I think it was), but then won five of the last 13 (losing two others in OT and one in shootout). So 2-9 and 5-12 would have been the splits in that case.
