I've skipped to the last page here...PPG is a bad way to do this. You need to use wins minus losses. Here's why.

If two Eastern teams tie at one venue and then tie in the return leg, they get 1 PPG. If 2 Western teams each win at home, they get 1.5 PPG.

I'm not sure I get your point. This table is showing the overall standings in the league. And two wins are better than two ties in the standings. 17-0-17 (51 pts) is a lot better than 0-34-0 (34 points) but in your system those two teams would be equal.

You don't give any credit for ties? Wins are better than ties but ties are still worth something.

Here are the standings by your system. Almost exactly the same, depending on how you break ties. Still shows that the East and West are pretty even which was the original point.

There isn't much to say about the changes - it was just one game. With only 28 games left, and a probably WL or WT for the East this upcoming week, it's not going to change much from the status quo week in or week out for the rest of the season. If anything, we will see incremental change to the East or merely stagnation from both conferences. However, since Toronto has five of its remaining inter-conference games yet to play...

In terms of overall GPG and GAPG, the two conferences are dead even; the West has scored exactly one more goal in inter-conference play than the West. The six point difference is completely from the West's 21-5-9 home record, compared to the East's 16-7-6 home record. The PPG difference is down to +0.09 for the West. Breaking down the data even further:

The East has four teams (Chicago, Montreal, Philadelphia, Toronto) under the 1.33 Mendoza line. By contrast, the West has three (Chivas, Dallas, Los Angeles) below 1.33 PPG. That's 40% and 33%, pretty damn close with such small sample sizes. We have two teams with 1 game left:

Kansas City (2.38 PPG) and Dallas (1.11 PPG).

Then there's four teams with only two games left:

Houston (1.86 PPG), Montreal (1.00), New England (1.71), San Jose (1.75). Like it or not, even when those teams finish they still contribute to the overall average, meaning that teams that finish early and get their points in will help their conference in our 'standings.' The miniscule number of remaining games means that teams with lots of games left (Toronto, Chivas, LA, Salt Lake) won't be able to nudge the tally much in either direction.

Moreover, the West has only ten home games to the East's 16 home games left. This means that Chivas and LA, who aren't doing so hot anyway, will be playing most of their remaining games on the road.

Not many games left, but Eastern-Conference fans should have some cautious optimism that their conference's chosen team has a good shot to win MLS Cup for the first time since 2008.

I think that's a strange conclusion to draw from the inter-conference standing. Especially since the playoffs are now strictly by conference. In the past the crossover system meant that the stronger conference got more teams in the playoffs. That advantage is now gone. The Cup final is just one team against another team.

Possibly. My thinking is that the best Eastern team in inter-conference play has a higher PPG than the highest Western team, but the sample sizes and total games played are just too small to make any real inference. Compared to last year, the Eastern fans should be optimistic, for the reason you suggested and that the East actually has a few good teams.

    1) I don't know anyone who is a fan of a conference

    2) Conferences don't win championships, teams do. History is replete with championship teams that have come from weaker conferences/divisions/leagues.

Here's the chart. I'm leaving tomorrow for a month so newtex will handle the major influx of games until then, as he's always done. The West gained back some ground, but all three games were Western home games so the Eastern teams haven't lost anything; if anything, picking up two points against Seattle and Vancouver only helps their chances.

On an unrelated note, everybody make sure they watch the austerity team take on the anti-austerity team for the Euro finals.

The East could take the lead with a NY win over Seattle.
