Good move bringing Macala to Al Ahli. It's a win-win for both Bernard and the club. They will most likely be promoted back to the first division by next year, and I expect we'll be seeing Bernard in Al Kharitiyath very soon.

Apparently Hadi Aghili is joining Qatar SC. I hope the QSL clubs don't make disastrous signings like last year. Ironic how they go for budget priced North Africans when they have some of the biggest budgets in Asia...

I'll compile the list of summer transfers on Wiki later this month btw in case you were interested Drury.

Good man, good task to undertake, there's already been quite a few signings and it's only June, season starts in September!

Haha yep! :) I could say the same for you with your contributions to Asian football. I used to think you were a bot with all the edits you make. lol

oh also another key point- QFA no longer handles the dealings of signing players (apparently they did before this season, or at least a part in it), so it will be interesting to see how it'll impact their choice of signings. I wonder if this affected the signing of Raul. I might get started on a page after a week or so, or less.

I just a dedicated football fan my friend.

As for the transfers, it's intesrting what you say about the QFA there, taking a back step.

Looking at the players moving clubs, I think Qatar SC can be a big team next year. I likenthe right back who has just gone to them from Al Rayyan, of what i caught of the Emir Cup final, he looked decent.

Elspamo, can you maybe give us a break down of where teams will be playing?

Today Al Saliyia announced that they will use the Al Rayyan Stadium because they don't have a stadium of their own. I think they previously shared with Qatar SC?

Al Khuraiyat have shared with Al Rayyan in the past aswell, does this mean they will be moving out?

And with Qatar getting hosting right for 2022 WC, is this a good sign of the domestic league and teams sharing?

Tbh a lot of the teams just play wherever. I know they are supposed to have a home stadium, but they don't seem to give a damn. Umm Salal, Lekhwiya, Kharaitiyat, Sailiya, etc may have de facto home stadiums but it seems that they play at a different home venue almost every other match. So I would not worry about their home stadiums for the most part. If I am aware of any changes, then I'll post them on the 2012-13 page. Otherwise, you can check qsl.com for each team's home stadium.

Not really sure what you mean on your last point. If by that you mean, is it bad to see teams sharing stadiums when the WC is coming here in 2022, I wouldn't worry. A lot of new stadiums are going to be built by then. Though I would like to see more stadiums being constructed for the near future, ESPECIALLY with the formation of two teams in very recent years and the QFA considering forming even more teams for the next season. (which would be good imo)

I don't think stadiums are a major issue, and who uses what etc, but some people will pick up on the fact that teams don't really have a home, so building all these wonderful stadiums when they don't have a stadium to begin with. It also seems to break the ACL criteria in that respect, so how they do get so many teams when half just play at someone else home is beyond me.

What teams are QFA thinking of forming?

Hahah that would be something. At least it is a stronger competition than GCC.

There are no other English media reports about it that I can see. Only the Qatari websites are mentioning it.

Anyways it would be great if the Arab Champions League returns, it offers much more competition than the GCC and also a great rivalry between Africa, the Gulf and the Levante. Should be very entertaining to watch if it does return. Although, Qatar pulling out the last two seasons it was held, what kind of team do you think they will send? It is obvious that in the GCC, they send weaker clubs there to gain experience rather than to win it (although it is sometimes counter intuitive), so do you think Arab Champions League will be the same? Personally I'd love to see Al Sadd play in it, especially with Raul with them. :)

It will be very interesting to see which other clubs they choose for these tournaments, especially the Arab Champions League.

For me, sending the champions to the Arab Champions League is the only thing they can do. Having a strong Arab League might just kill off interest in ACL?? If it's not league champions, then at least a cup winner rather than what we have in the GCC. If they can't have some sort of champion then the focus/prestige of the competition is lost slightly.

We might just end up with too much football for the top clubs. So all competitions have to be managed properly, and lets face it, you won't have an Al Sadd competing properly in ACL and Arab cups so league champions is my preferred choice, but a cup winner might have to do (although could be the same team).

The GCC for me is fine for the lower ranked sides to get some exposure and in theory get them ready for future events like Arab if they get ever get the call.

I don't think we need to send a cup winner to the tournament, just a team which was ranked decently in the league. Al Sadd were 4th, and had the 4th qualfiying spot for the ACL not gone to the Emir Cup winners, Al Sadd would be in the ACL. So I think definitely Al Sadd are the next best choice.

I don't think Arab Champions League could ever kill off the ACL, there are a lot of East Asian sides which are stronger than Arab sides. Tbh Arab Champions League will never be considered with much significance as long as teams from countries like Djibouti and Palestine are able to compete in it so I don't think there will be too much of a surprise of Al Sadd compete in it rather than a team already competing in the ACL, which you are right, would be too much football for them. Just as long as QFA don't do something retarded like sending their 7th or 8th ranked team I think the tournament may be taken a little seriously. Even more so if Al Sadd are chosen to represent Qatar in it.

As for the GCC, even though I criticized QFA in the past for sending our lowest ranked teams, I think that it does gain them invaluable experience playing against some big teams like the champions of Bahrain or Kuwait, which will only help improve the QSL.

You've got to hand it to him; the man's turning 69 in August and he's still prepared to take on a new task. I hope he continues taking good care of himself because I'd hate to see the day he officially retires from coaching. I hope he's healthy enough to coach for the next 10 years, although the stress of football might make this an unlikely goal to achieve. But as happy as I am for him to coach in Qatar, I'm sad to see him leave Kuwait for a third time. Kuwait will always be his home, in my opinion; I just hope he feels the same way.

Macala wasn't very lucky after leaving Kuwait. His most successful coaching period will always be with Kazma SC and Kuwait's national team, during the mid 90s. He was very unlucky with Al-Ain of the UAE and Bahrain's national team. It wasn't his fault that the Al-Ain players crumbled against Ittihad in the Asian Champions League, and it certainly wasn't his fault that Bahrain's penalty kick taker couldn't net the ball past the New Zealand goalkeeper in 2009. Macala is, unfortunately, notorious for some very bad near misses in football. Kuwait were two penalty kicks away from reaching the World Cup under his management, Oman were a penalty kick away from winning the 2004 Gulf Cup of Nations under his command, etc. But the best thing about Macala is his ability to dust himself off and have another go, all over again.

I wish him well with Al-Ahli of Qatar. It shouldn't be a difficult task promoting them, especially not for him.

I am not quite sure how the reserve teams will fit into the Second Division. As each club is allowed 35 players (I think?), the reserve team fills part of that quota... so will they just use the reserve teams of each club as they are in the Second Division? Because it would be pretty harsh to put clubs in a position where they have no reserve team to field if they need to do so, for example, in the Qatari Stars Cup.

The more viable option would to make 'B' teams, in essence a 'feeder' club with entirely different players, but if that happens then I see the Second Division becoming (more of) a joke with 17 to 20 year old amateur Qatari players being the leading stars, as clubs won't want to spend funds on new professional players for their team in the Second Division. But those two options still would not allow the 'Reserve team', or whatever it will be, to be promoted to the Stars League. I'm interested to see how the QFA decides to implement this.
