Actually, I think Denmark has a great chance of going through. I will all depend on the next match of course, but while a victory for Portugal does not give us many guarantees, even a defeat will leave Denmark in position to fight for the qualifying until the last round. Specially if Germany wins agains Holland, but I think the Dutch will at least obtain a draw in this second match (just guestimating, of course :) ).

The big difference is that both Denmark and Portugal were badly struck in defense, but only Portugal were crying about their injuries... and there is no contradiction in my statements, since at the WC-10 we were not only talking about some players in defense, but just about the whole Danish team being badly struck by injuries and being on pain killers, or simply not being match fit because they had hardly played for their club teams the past ½-season... or they simply were over-the-hill and quit their club or NT careers right after the WC... So it was an all together terrible unprepared and unfit team Denmark were fielding...

I would go as far as to say, that the WC-10 team was the most badly prepared Danish team the past 35 years, so I'm not trying to make silly excuses over a few injuries... This Danish Euro-12 team is on the other hand in top shape, and the over-the-hill players are gone.

    Exactly.

Disastrous 2nd half for C. Ronaldo as he could made this easy for us. Kudos for Denmark to putting up a good fight.

Both teams can still go through.

The problem of Ronaldo is simple. There are 11 good players playing for Portugal, some of them world class, like Nani and Pepe, but people only focus on Ronaldo and he cannot deal with that pressure. He did not play that badly. Too bad the last opportunity he missed.

Right now its Ronaldo. How do you miss that. Varela said his reputation.

I think Portugal showed why they are contenders to win the European championship. First off they scored three goals without Ronaldo. They played good open football. yeah they gave up two goals but they never gave up. Paulo Bento should start with Varela and Nelson Oliveria. instead of using him as a super sub. I expect Portugal to make it to the next round. Holland is playing with too much pressure and they have a bad history playing against Portugal in competition. CR7 will score just give him more time. Football is a sport of 11 players. So CR7 is trying to involve his teammates.

The Netherlands Portugal game is going to be worrying. So many things can happen in terms of points. With that said the only real change I would make would be Nelson Oliveira for Postiga.

What really worries me is we aren't able to hold possession at all. It was 60 % - 40% for the Danes, whats going to happen vs Netherlands?

Germany will advance to the quarter-finals if
    - they do not lose to Denmark by 0–1 or 1–2 or by 2 goals or more OR
    - Portugal do not defeat the Netherlands

Portugal will advance to the quarter-finals if
    - they defeat the Netherlands and Denmark don't defeat Germany by exactly 1 goal while scoring at least 3 goals OR
    - they do not lose to the Netherlands and Germany do not lose to Denmark OR
    - they lose to the Netherlands by 1 goal and Germany defeat Denmark.

Denmark will advance to the quarter-finals if
    - they defeat Germany OR
    - they draw with Germany and the Netherlands defeat Portugal.

The Netherlands will advance to the quarter-finals if
    - they defeat Portugal by at least 2 goals and Germany defeat Denmark.

I'm pretty sure that Portugal will advance if we defeat the Netherlands and Germany wins or ties too.:geek:

    I should've read this:
"- they do not lose to the Netherlands and Germany do not lose to Denmark OR"
    before writing anything...

I did change this passage. ;)
The thing is that Portugal can still be eliminated even if they win 10:0 against the Dutch.

Frankly, I don't have too much hope for Ronaldo. I've always been one of his biggest supporters and defenders and hoped he'd "come around" so to speak as he grew, especially after Mourinho took over at Real Madrid but I think the opposite happened. As evident with his remarks today about Messi, it is clear the guy still is vastly immature and selfish which really isn't much of a surprise. Mourinho is great at man-management but he is famous for feeding the egos of his players to give them utmost confidence and while it may produce results in the short run for Ronaldo, he will suffer in the long run (as we are already seeing). Many people spoke of Ronaldo lacking the supporting cast necessary to propel him to greatness but I think people are slowly seeing that if Ronaldo doesn't succeed at the international stage, he literally has no one to blame but himself.

Excellent post. I also use to be a huge supporter of his, but it has been waning lately. He continues to display some very odd character flaws. For me it hurt that he missed the both breaks, it really does, but what is even more frustrating is to see him begin sulking, flailing his arms, making those stupid faces....all the while the rest of the boys are running around giving it their all!

I can certainly understand the pressure there is on him to score (I don't expect it much anymore, especially after this game), its probably getting to him right as he is about to shoot it, hes second guessing himself which is where the problem lies. But he has to stop with the theatrics. Him talking about Messi, when he is not even in the same tournament, shows that he is not only shaken, but simple minded. The less attention he gave to the duel, or people egging him on by chanting or bringing up the South America, the less often it would happen. Messi was probably smiling ear to ear on his couch when Ronaldo missed those chances.

But then again, he has come back from some horrid horrid chants and pressure before. Maybe he will step up, maybe he wont.... Just stop with the theatrics

Have the Danes start denying they were claiming favouritism based on "recent history"?

This group is crazy. Germany is NOT even guaranteed a spot yet?! Netherlands is still in it?! Wow. Nuts. Sunday is going to be insane. Prediction: Portugal - Holland will NOT be pretty. Anyone know who the ref is going to be? It's going to be tribal warfare.

Honestly, I doubt it. Messi isn't driven to placate his ego as Ronaldo is. He has desire to win, etc. (as all athletes do) but the majority of his success comes from simply enjoying the game. Ronaldo had this when he was much younger, which is why his best tournaments were as a 19 and 21 year old (04' & 06'), but when the pressure piled and all he thought about was beating others out for individual titles and confirming his presence as No. 1, his performances waned. If Messi were to miss chances like that I could honestly see Ronaldo jumping in the air, hugging his family, etc. Absolutely elated, while Messi probably saw those chances Ronaldo missed today and thought 'lol damn, sucks". Ronaldo is in serious need of a psychologist, IMO. He needs to find his love for the game again.

lol the funny thing is...Messi has most people fooled. Everyone makes him out to be humble...big team player etc etc but there have been numerous occasions where he`s lost his cool and proved otherwise, for example, kicking the ball at the RM fans, when Barca won the title a couple seasons ago he ALSO didn`t go crazy and celebrate with the team as he had a fairly bad game. When he got subbed off early in the CDR (?) two seasons ago and threw a tantrum according to one of the inside sources...forgot who, too lazy to look it up and I've got to leave soon, but I will find a link for it upon request.

He was probably jumping for joy the moment he missed those chances.

Not to mention complaining to Pep when Ibra was on the team that he wanted to play more in the 9 spot.

I know all about that. As I said, as an athlete, he wants to win, as one of the best in the world, he wants to continue to have that claim, but that isn't what drives and motivates him. Two VERY different things. Frankly, I'm disgusted virtually every time I see Ronaldo "celebrating" a teammate's goal (be it with Madrid or Portugal, albeit with Portugal it disgusts me a lot more). He seems that he simply does it out of necessity and not to look bad but not because he actually wants to celebrate in the team's success. His selfishness is at the root of all his success and downfalls.

It is correct just like the only result that could put italy out of euro 2004 was a 2-2 draw between sweden and denmark. It happened.
