Lannoy is most famous for sending of Kaka at WC10 in the Brazil v Cote d'Ivoire match. He also did Netherlands v Denmark at that tournament. He has, I think it's fair to say, a reputation for being one of the weaker Elite UEFA referees. That said, he keeps getting big assignments so it might be a case where his mistakes are scrutinized more heavily in the aftermath of the Kaka red card. Anyway, his recent major matches: UCL: Real Madrid v CSKA (R16), Man City v Bayern, Chelsea v Bayer Leverkusen, Zenit v Shakhtar EL: Atletico v Hannover (QF) EURO 2012 qualifiers: Denmark v Norway, Netherlands v Sweden, Russia v Armenia
Good thru the first 20 minutes. I think he got the tackle on Neuer correct. If it was studs into the leg it would have been red, but since it was just the sweeping leg it was just a caution. Good call. I was just catching the tackle on Germany right outside the Portuguese box and the commentators wondering why advantage wasn't played - the advantage was already gone. Gomez receives the ball at 16 yards out from goal with his back to goal. The Portuguese defense stopped when the whistle blew, which is the only reason the ball rolled into the net. Good call, no advantage there.
The defense did stop on the whistle so you can't say for sure it took a goal away, but let it go an extra second or two Stephane.
Not impressed with the handling of the free kick - reset the wall, but allowed other Portugese players (to kicker's left) to be closer than 10, who charged in when the first touch was played. Too focused on the wall, not on the other players.
have this ref ever heard of giving advantage , he seems to whistle immedietly without caring where the balll ends up next and he isnt doing it to give a yellow card either
No that is simply not a good call. There was barely any contact, it would if anything be trifling, and he blew the whistle and stopped the Portugese defense which consisted of one man that could've been beaten.
Lack of "situational awareness" is probably how you could sum up all of Lannoy's deficiencies. He knows the Laws and can even manage a game well overall, but in key moments, he gets tunnel vision. You see it with the advantage call. You see it with the wall management. And you see it all the way back to the Kaka incident. As for the tackle on Neuer, I agree yellow is just. But he definitely got him with his studs, despite what Keller said. In a different situation, that could be red. It's an incredibly foolish tackle to make. Lannoy, out of position (through no fault of his own) had no real choice but to go yellow for control. Even if he thought it was red, there was no way to sell that. Yellow was the just result. I wonder if the AR helped at all. Felt the only somewhat major miss (other than the lack of advantage call) was an elbow early, in front of the technical areas. He called the foul, on Alves I believe, but felt the fourth needs to give help there because it certainly had the hint of a caution--or at least a major talking-to.
He's called what, 5 fouls? Only one in which you could or should give advantage. Hardly seems to justify your claim.
I agree that's a good call. Nani tries to stay up and good for him, but the ref blows the whistle when it goes out of play and gives the correct yellow. See a couple really weird calls and one that some refs would mess up. Good call.
Agreed. And in the same way the first "advantage" call was not trifling this was also not trifling. There wasn't much contact but it did affect the way Nani made that run, same as when the German player (Khediera?) was affected while making the pass to Gomez.
Not only that, but he went into his ankle with the ball 5+ yards gone already. It might have been a bit of a slip and there might not have been that much force, but any more violence in that and we could be talking red, as absurd as that might seem.
Ironically, the AAR was not and did not get up to the line. Being a yard off, he really didn't have the perfect angle. He got it right, but if that was closer, his positioning would have been a talking point.
Apparently UEFA told the crowd the game could be abandoned if stuff continues to get thrown onto the pitch. Thankfully Law 5 gives the refs and not Platini that option. Abandon a Euro game for thrown paper?
I don't think it would've affected much. Of course the case continues to be made to move him to the other side and out of the way, where he can be on the line for a proper view.
