I'm sorry, but I'm with the boycott.

Ukraine should be boycotted unless they clear up their act. Good move by Germany. Even if it disrupts the Euro.

However I believe they are not going far enough - they should threaten withdrawing the teams themselves from partaking in any games in Ukraine.

Threats? This is correct? This is a democratic way? Julia is one year in prison, and you are just beginning to talk about it. I'm against what was happening to her. Do you think if her release it now it will change the situation? Do not tell me. Not long ago, a terrorist shot at Toulouse students, why do not you say - let's abolish EURO2016?? Do not mix football and politics! Have a nice day!

Don't bother these stupid people.... They don't know anything about Ukraine besides negative stereotypes and bad news in press..... For the past 2 monthes it has only been really negative stuff about Ukraine in press, all the time.... It feels like somebody is trying to destroy it for us.

Don't mix politics with sports and leasure.... And if you really care about the "good" and want the best for the people of Ukraine - then you will support the tournament.... These stupid boycotts don't do anything good to the country..... By the way... very many people in Ukraine believe that Tymoshenko SHOULD sit in prison, because of her economic crime.....So many people in Ukraine find this decision fair..... So why do you people interfer in politics in a country you probably never been to?

Go to Ukraine. Enjoy the country. Meet new people and have fun !!!

Would have been more reasonable and more prudent to protest a year ago when Tymoshenko was first convicted. Or even earlier - when she was first accused and stood trial. To be sure, at the level of the heads of state some criticism did follow. But what good is it today? Today this over-reaction is disingenious.

P.S. This boycott may even succeed. But it is no less disingenious, nevertheless.

Agreed. But even if the reaction is late it doesn't change the fact that you should do the right thing. And that is boycotting Ukraine.

Well the boycott in general is ok and the right move.

But after years of preparation and anticipation you can't cancel the Euro or retreat any national team. That would be a disaster for every soccer and tournament fan.

Let the games take all place in Poland or wherever but don't kill the Euro atmosphere!

the issue is not as much that she's in the prison in the first place (at least if she had a fair trial which i'm in no position to decide for or against) ... the issue is that it does have political overtones, and more importantly that there's rumors about violence against prisoners ... again ... in no position to decide which part of that debate thats right and which one is spinning the story (could certainly see a way for both parties doing both things, although at least one is dodgy).

No matter what it does prove that Ukarine have some its share of political unstability, which in itself are cause for concern, since it opens the door for issues in the first place. The bombings in Dnepropetrovsk(?) and the uncertainty about, who did what why, other than strong suscipcions that there's something political in it aren't helping

And what will you achieve? Those who will suffer will be regular Ukrainians and Ukrainian fans. Those were never at fault to begin with.

It seems a move to boycott the games in Ukraine is building and the organisers are working on their plan'B' to hold all the games in Poland, fans themselves should think carefully of their own position before committing large sums of their hard earned cash even if they have no interest in the treatment of political prisoners and police brutality in Ukraine.

Of course some will try and tell you its all just trash from the Sun etc

    This whole boycott is stupid.
Somehow when it comes to Olympics in China (mind you - a country where freedom of speech and civil rights, and executions with no trial are common), everything was nice and dandy. No problem there! WHY? because we need China money... Ukraine, Poland...who cares...let's shit on their parade.

It's 38 days before the opening game. It's too late to change anything...all the fans that booked flights, hotels...Politicians may not come to Ukraine, but who really cares? It's the fans supporting their teams...that's what counts. Period.

What about the people who already booked the flights, hotels in Ukraine? They will be just simply screwed over by politicians as usual?
It's not that a natural catastrophe occured, or war broke out in Ukraine, it's just filthy politics.
The Tymoshenko case couldn't be more obvious, the EU wants Ukraine to join, so the union gets a 40 million free market, and have geopolitical advantage over Russia, but they can't let Ukraine to join as long as they have political prisoners.

Not to mention 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, 2018 World Cup in Russia, 2022 World Cup in Qattar. All these events are scheduled to occur in countries with an even worse human rights record than Ukraine.

So ironic that the politician who did most to undermine and destroy Ukraine's brief flirtation with democracy and freedom is now the cause celebre in Europe as the victim of oppression.

This stuff never ceases to amaze me.

That's true. She was made out to be this princess of Orange Revolution. Julia and Yuschenko were going to bring Ukraine into the camp of truly democratic countries. Tymoshenko turned out to be just another corrupt Ukrainian politician, just like Yanukovych and the rest of them.

Europeans make her out to be this politicial prisoner but her prosecution was not political. She was prosecuted under corruption articles of the criminal code. I don't know if she is truly guilty or truly innocent but let's make that distinction on facts.

Well frankly I'm almost certain that she was guilty of the charges. She was one of the most corrupt people in the entire country. However, I'm also 99% sure it was politically motivated because every politician in the country is corrupt, just maybe not quite as bad as she is.

So yes it was likely politically motivated, but also likely that the charges were true.

Either way I have little sympathy for her. She more than anyone killed the Orange coalition and democracy in Ukraine. There is a reason why Yushenko said he'd rather have the devil in Kiev than Tymoshenko.

Couldn't agree more with you guys!
Don't worry. This "Timoshenko" show is just a temporary thing. A few stupid EU politicians are trying to look like they acctualy give a f**k. They probably couldn't even find Ukraine on the map. Screw them!

I am 100% confident that in 37 days we'll be enjoying the games while sipping cold beer.

I'm Polish and will attend 6 matches in Poland, and 1 in Lviv, Ukraine (GER-POR).
I can't wait!!! It will be awesome.

Cheers to our east-border neighbors! Hang in there! :D

I've got flights, I've got somnewhere to stay and I have tickets. If UEFA dared to move the tournament at this stage I would still go to Kiev and take part in the subsequent protests against them.

Lets face it, it's going to take a substantial threat to Platini's personal saftey (not players and fans) for it to be moved away from Ukraine at this stage.

I'm looking forward to going to Ukraine, making new friends and who knows maybe even seeing a few good matches (it is a football tournament still).

Oh dear, what a dumb idea! From my experience all politicians are dirty scum. I couldn't care less if one is rotting in prison, just don't interfere with the football.

Sounds harsh, but the only reason we know about this is because other dodgy politicians threw a fake hissy fit to promote their own interests, no doubt. I stress "fake" because its so obviously fake. All of this is a year late, its just being brought up now because the Euros are in the spotlight.

Tymoshenko got jailed for not guaranteing the best deal for Ukraine while in office (paying too much money in a gas deal). not embezzlement or corruption, but basically for not getting as good a deal as someone arbitrarily decided she should have.

The imprisonment is fully political. And given Ukraine's political history this is a very untransparent and politically ugly country. I'm not saying Tymoshenko is crystal clear, but this spells witch hunt.

Tymoshenko should be released, else we are just condoning human rights violations.

That's not true. Tymoshenko nearly sabotaged the deliveries of Russian gas to both Ukraine and half of the EU. Because of her, a dozen of EU countries had dipped into their strategic reserves and Ukraine's reputation (and budget) were significantly harmed.

In addition, there is a whole series of charges, for which she is yet to stand trial, including tax evasion, sending government contracts to her business connections, etc.

Mate this has been brewing for years, don't you get world news over the pond?

Of course the finals will go ahead, but any problems and I can see players walking out, they wont stand any more racist shit , just look at the Suarez incident and I'm afraid the Ukrainians and to a lesser extent the Poles, still think it OK to be openly racist, Its for a reason that the England team didn't want to be based in Ukraine, after all Ukraine fans did try and set light to Robert Green and make monkey noises to the black players, Do that again and its game over.

The Police looking for bribes and girls and the like ripping off the travelling fans will just be tolerated , but not the racist abuse.

Racism is an issue separate from Tymoshenko imprisonment. I am sure there is a fair amount of it in Ukraine. Government and FFU have made a few steps to try and keep racism out of public arena but those efforts might not have been enough. But let me give a little perspective - racism in Russia, a future WC host, is FAR FAR FAR greater.
