Since we moved to ATL, outside of our annual pilgrimage to watch the team play, my main connection with the faithful is online. I always enjoyed Chico's posts because they were witty and spot-on. It seems he was no different in his life. My thoughts and prayers to his family and to our greater family of fans who knew him as well.

Chico made a positive difference for many of us in the Barra. I will miss his comments on these boards, and his presence in the stands.

    RIP

This is so right. When you see a post with certain names attached, you know the post is going to be interesting and insightful and a real contribution to the community and discussion. Chico13 was one of those names. He will be missed.

I never met Chico, but I "knew" him through his BS posts and a couple of PM's we exchanged a year ago. I mistakenly thought he was moderating the
DCU boards and wrote to complain about an insulting, over-the-top rant flaming some poor sod who was attempting to make what I thought was a perfectly innocent point. Chico handled me perfectly: he pointed out that he wasn't one of our moderators (but would have infracted the writer if he were one); explained how to reach our own mods; agreed with me that the rant was totally uncalled for; and then closed by saying that the "ranter" was a friend of his and that the post reflected poorly on DC United supporters groups. What I took from this exchange was that Chico was astute and valued civil discourse, but was also loyal to his friends. You can't have too many people like that - I really wish I had known him.

That's pretty much exactly what happened to Jan and man around '98 or '99. We wandered by the Barra Brava tailgate in Lot 8, just to check it out, and felt a little awkward. Until Chico walked up to us, asked us who were were and welcomed us as if he knew us all his life.

    I will miss him. Forever.

    I can't stop crying.

Sorry to hear this - I didn't know Chico, but reading this thread gives some insight into what he meant to all of you. It's nice to see some of the good times you all had with him (particularly the victory cigar, love that).

    Rest in Peace Chico.

I met Chico at one of my first Lot 8 tailgates. La Barra Blonde was introducing to several people and brought me up to a man relaxing (at least at that particular moment), wearing sunglasses and hat, I think he had a beer in hand?. He smiled at me and embodied the feeling I always feel in Lot 8 and in the stadium: welcome.

I didn't know him beyond his posts here. Yet, when I saw Riz post this late last night, my first thought was, "no....."

My instinct was to let those who knew him well make their posts first. Now that I've read your posts, I'm saddened that I'll not have the opportunity to meet him in person.

I know I don't post much anymore, and honestly I did think alot about this place today, but, today I stayed away from here, at least until now. Facebook was enough for me today and last night. Anyway, just a few of my thoughts I have posted around the interwebs :

As I posted on facebook last night when I found out: "I just got horrible news. An old friend and the first ever member to welcome me into La Barra Brava, Javier Chico Solares (Chico), passed away this evening. If you had anything to do with DC United in the past 16 years you know who he is. A Brilliant light in D.C. United's and MLS supporters clubs has gone out. Chico, I will miss, love, and remember you always my friend. May you R.I.P. =o("

I first met Chico in Lot 8 at the Barra Brava tailgate back in 03/04 and he was the warmest, most welcoming person there. Shortly after that day I Joined the barra and was immediately treated like family by him, and everyone there. I spent many games in 135 at RFK, went on quite a few road trips....etc etc. There were few constatnts, but Chico, and his undieing love and passion for soccer, D.C. United, Barra Brava, and its members was one of them.

SInce I cant make it to the D.C. United match this evening, I will be raising a glass in his honor at home with a good home cooked meal. I'm still in a state of shock over this, and just at a loss. About the only thing I COULD say last night, was "tears is all I got right now.".

I could not have said this better myself. See even my memory in my older age is getting foggy. I thought it was sometime in 03/04. Anyway, the friend "Ken" Rob mentioned is me. I remember that day like it was yesterday, and I remember Chico being the FIRST person in the Barra to welcome us with open arms. Shortly there after we were as good as family in the Barra and went on to make many many amazing and lasting friends. We all may not be as close as we were or have been scattered about a bit, but I always will look back on that time in my life with proud and profound fondness, and with grattitude and thanks for all of the great people that came into my life from that experience, Chico being the first one. We all have our difference, and we may or may not totally get along, but in the end we all do love one another like family.

I haven't posted in years, but if ever an occasion demanded it...

Chico was one of the first people I met both in the Barra and in the soccer world as a whole. I'd just gotten into the game for the first time six years ago when I went to RFK for the first time and I'm pretty sure I remembered Chico's name from an article about the Barra somewhere. I'm never confident with new people and I was intimidated as hell, but a couple of sentences and a swig of Beam later and I may as well have been family. I always looked forward to seeing him and got to know him a little bit for the couple of games I saw that year, and then moved and barely got to see United at all over the next few years. The few times I got back I never wanted to impose but I always thought of Chico any time I thought of the Barra, the example of all that was generous and welcoming and passionate about the group, and looked forward to getting to really know when I finally made it back to DC for good.

I only got to meet him once, briefly, after I moved back this year and he was as friendly and gracious as ever. I'm incredibly sad I never knew Chico well, but I'm incredibly grateful to have known him at all. Rest in peace, brother.

    OMG!

Just read the story in a Soccer America e-mail newsletter and, to say I'm shocked & saddened, would be a MAJOR understatement.

I didn't know CHICO13, personally, but, through Big Soccer, we exchanged PMs & posts on our favorite sports items...soccer & Michigan football. He actually wrote me about his experience going to the Big House a few years ago & I, in turn, wrote him about my visit last October. My one regret is that we never got to meet at a Michigan football game, as we had talked about on many occasions.

While we disagree on soccer teams...I'm a Galaxy supporter & he loved his DCU...I did admire & respect his love for MLS & soccer. So, from one member of the LA Riot Squad to a member of the Barra Brava:

RIP, my soccer friend and...GO BLUE!!

    Well that's good to hear.

Too bad Cox Cable in Fairfax County isn't showing the game on the channel that it said it would CSN+ so Now I have missed the last two matches in a row.

The channel says DC vs. Montreal but it is showing O's postgame. What crap.

Chico treated me well online and the one time that I met him, I believe in KC. He was welcoming and was interested in making everyone feel welcomed whether they had a lot to contribute or not.

"Sometimes it makes me sad, though... Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend."

Was busy as hell today and didn't have the chance to get on the boards. Home watching the game this evening (i planned to go to the game but circumstances conspired against it), and I was moving about busily during the game. So I was absolutely floored to hear during halftime that they were mourning Chico, and to look up and see his picture. Yikes. I've spent the last 20 minutes reading this thread before posting. I can't believe it. Met him a number of times here and there and he was always cool as hell. I am sick to my stomach.

    RIP Chico
