Wow, I don't know what to say...

Like many, I have so many wonderful remembrances. Chico on road trips north to the Swamp, Chico picking me up at the '04 Cup at LA (which he reminded me of here on BS just a couple of weeks ago), Chico as the voice of the Barra during one of our TV appearances.

What I remember most is the way he embraced life every day with a sly, impish, sometimes cynical smile. He more than anyone appreciated what we have as a DCU family, and he truly wanted the best for every member of that family. He was a great guy ALL the time and a true elder in the best sense -- someone who walked the walk and made other people happy.

    We will miss you Chico,
    Amy and Andy

I have never met Chico and regrettably so. My wife and I recently became (Few years ago) Huge fans of DCU. Our first game was right behind the Barra Brava, screaming and shouting standing for D.C. the whole time.
We were hooked ever since. Unfortunately we can not handle standing the whole time because of her disabilities and we now sit on the quiet side; But because of the likes of Chico and those who are dedicated to the team we are determined to do the same on the quiet side.
Thank you Chico! We never knew you personally but through your legacy, we shall take that torch and light up the Quiet side!! Descanza en Paz hermano!! Vamos!!!

I only met Chico briefly for a few moments. I was a scrawny ass kid in a Crew jersey walking through the concourse at halftime as Barra Bravva was singing and dancing. I was just trying to walk by and not get my ass kicked, or worse, spill my beer. Some dude puts his hand up in a "do not pass" way and I am thinking, "great, this is bad news" then he morphs into a smile and we lean back against the wall, enjoy our beers and chat for a few moments.

That's stuck with me years since then. Definitely one of the good guys. Sorry for your loss.

Javier Chico Solares and I argued on here about Etch long before we met. It was near the end of Etch's run, and I thought he needed to step aside. But to Chico, it wasn't just a player. This was a legend from his homeland whom he had grown to know. We didn't see eye to eye on the situation although I don't remembe rhow heated it got.

The first time I met him at a tailgate, he said, "Oh, so you're monster." I was worried he was going to light into me, but he smiled, handed me his bottle of rum and said we had to have a drink together then we'd be friends. Just a hell of a guy all around. I'm bummed I didn't get to have one last drink with him.

Like many, I don't come here as often any more.. and like many, I met Chico at the DCU games.. but for me, it was at a roadtrip against the MetroDonkeys.. His first words to me, after wrapping his arm around me as we were around the LN drum banging it were... "I Love you Guys, ******** the metros!" How can you not want to befriend someone like that?

I may not be as close to him as many were, but I am lucky enough still to have called him, to still call him a friend.

    Descansa en paz compadre!

I've come out of my BigSoccer hiatus to just briefly touch on the impact Chico has had not just on me, but on several people who are Barra and proud DC United fans.

When I first moved here in 2004, I went to my first DCU match with my friend Ken, had a great time and a few games later wound up meeting some Barra friends. Chico was one of the first to walk up introduce himself and welcome us to the club! He never had to say much, you always knew Chico had your back, and it was never more true the next season when derogotory comments were made about me and a few friends and our sexuality. Chico didn't hestiate for a minute and stepped in to say that in the Barra, no matter what we are all family, and if you don't like someone's race, religion, politics, or sexuality then you don't have to be in the Barra.

I cannot tell you how much that meant to me and to many other LGBT fans who subsequently heard of his actions. Chico has been a true brother and friend, and his actions in Lot 8, in the stands, and in his everyday life make saying goodbye that much harder to do.

I feel truly blessed to have known Chico, you will be truly missed my friend. At least we can all take comfort in knowing that he is watching over the DCU family from above.

    Rest in peace Chico!

RIP Chico. One of the guys from Lot 8 and the Barra that I miss the most since moving out here. He was one of the very first people to welcome me to the tailgate the first time I showed up, alone and intimidated but wanting to see what it was all about.

I'm really at a loss to process this. :(

Very sad to hear about this. Chico's efforts made everyone else have a better experience at the tailgates and the games, and on the message board, and everywhere having to do with United.

Sincere condolences to the Solares family and those who knew Chico best.

I wish I could be at the tailgate tonight to commiserate with the Barra and celebrate Chico's life with his friends.

I haven't been on BS much recently, but felt compelled to log in today to pay tribute. I met Chico, naturally, at a Barra tailgate. His good will, generosity, and approachability were infectious. He was the reason I joined the Barra. He taught me what it meant to be a supporter.

I unfortunately never met Chico in person, but have been interacting with him over this board for the past 10 years. I always mean to go to the tailgates, but never have actually gotten around to it. I think I'll start now.

    RIP Chico

I never had the privilege of meeting him but he has been a great presence in the Music conversations on this board for years and years. He always struck me as very good soul.

I am so sorry to hear this.

Condolences to his family and friends and the DCU community.

    RIP.

Yes, the soccer community in this country is a tight-knit group, and it always pains me to learn of another loss.

Thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and community...

Somewhere, Chico is reading this and smiling. He always wanted everyone and anyone to come and enjoy the atmosphere at the tailgate and in the Barra section.

This might have already been posted in this thread somewhere, but if so I skimmed over it. Chico is interviewed in this video a couple of times. He first comes in at 0:40 or so.

Like others, I only knew of him from his presence here. By his posts, he distinguished himself with interesting insights, fair appreciation of other writers, a consistent presence, and an uncynical love of the team and the game.

He really knew how to make a noob not feel like one, when I first showed up at the tailgate he made me feel like I'd been there for years.

    RIP
