The writter commented to Jason's inquiry about sourse of rumor that things didn't work out in Greece and that he is returning. So much for that.
From MLS soccer round-up. Could forward Caleb Folan be on his way out of Colorado? This report out of Greece details negotiations with Greek side Panionios regarding a move for the Republic of Ireland international It's in Greek. http://www.onsports.gr/Podosfairo/S...i-apo-tin-pleyra-Folan-kai-apantisi-Panionioy
Huh, I wonder what that article says. Who knows about Google translate, but it gives the idea there's a problem with the money. But this part, if accurate, suggests the Rapids were covering salary. Does that seem likely?
Shipping him out and paying his salary on the surface makes no sense except it frees a roster spot and possibly 'buys' cap space at $1/$1? A loan deal would allow for recalling him but would not provide cap relief or a roster spot (so far as I know anyway). As for "there's a problem with the money" in Greece, I think that was already in all the papers. ;>)
We must of given him a guaranteed contract. If not we could just release him and no biggee. Guess that whole VISA/ green card stuff was a smoke screen.
If I had to pick one $100K+ player that had to go to make room for a mysterous #10 young South American, it would have been Folan. Sorry bra.
Well, I wish him luck! I was never one to light a torch with the angry mob when assessing his abilities on this board. I now expect the other shoe to drop shortly. I am satisfied at how fist this situation seems to have taken care of itself.
what a terrible april fools joke Pid Army just found this tweet from Greek Footy "Folan did not sign with Panionios. The move eventually collapsed late last night because of his demands. Panionios signed Dimbala & Antunes". Who knows what is really going on. Something almost did anyway.
Some interesting Tweets from Folan: (This next one he deleted but it still showed up in my RSS feed) So clearly the whole "permanent residency" story was a cover for the fact that the Rapids are trying to move him.
From Jason's post: "made clear my intention to honour" Oh great - another Rapid that believes in honoring contracts!! From SteveD's: "GS needs to step up..." Where are all those Smith lovers and Bravo haters on this board? Why aren't they jumping in and telling us how Smith was so brilliant to sign Folan at high dollars to 2 years?
He is gone now. http://www.coloradorapids.com/news/2012/02/rapids-and-forward-caleb-folan-mutually-part-ways
This frees up an international slot, hopefully this allows us to add one or two more players. If the Rapids can find a steal like Rosales for Seattle last year... I'd be happy with that.
Said it in another thread, but they're signing a 22 year old Argentine #10. Don't know who, but he's apparently pedigreed and I think the Folan move frees up his spot.
I wish but that isn't really practical. Rosales took a league minimum salary with the understanding he would be taken care of the next year if he performed. I don't think we can expect that. I do think they are excited about him and they would be pretty foolish to throw around the signing of a #10 from Argentina if he wasn't a player they were expecting to make an immediate impact. I asked about him at the Fado's meeting and was told he wasn't a DP level player (yet) and was currently out of contract.
