Very poor. The official site used to be pretty awesome with the game day reports, but it took a serious step back after the redesign. It used to have weather conditions, field conditions, attendance, etc, etc and they were updated within a day of the game being completed, but usually within hours. Now, it never includes the weather conditions and field conditions, unless it is mentioned in the prose, and is getting worse and worse about reporting the attendance figures as the season goes on. Back at the start of the season I might be unlucky to have one or two that didn't mention the attendance and those were generally just the ones that got bad attendance, now it's pretty much hit and miss with even the good numbers not getting mentioned.

Rugby dominates in New Zealand and even super rugby has being getting low crowds.
New Zealand has a low population that doesn't earn much money.
    8k isn't too bad considering.

Two newspapers in New Zealand usually post attendance figures of Phoenix games in their reports. So does Adelaide Now.

Well, three out of five good games isn't bad, unfortunately the 2 bad ones were really, really bad. This season started out with a lot of promise, but it seems to be sliding off a bit. Still better than the last two seasons, so at least the league is moving in the right direction.

The A-League has an Iphone/Ipad app that has had the attendance for every game, and fairly timely. If you would like any of the attendances, let me know and I can post them or send them to you.

Bah. You have to have access to the Australia or New Zealand app store to get it and none of the ones available in the US store have attendance.

I now this might be kind of off topic, but why are the crowds so low? I know its still a young league, but its not like people don't know it there. It just seems really puzzling. Or maybe it just seems so bad because they're all playing in Rugby stadiums, like MLS in NFL venues back in the day

Wellington and Gold Cost. They need something to get people to their games.

I'd say Perth is another massive concern at the moment.

I've seen on another forum a comparison of A-League crowds to BBL crowds over the period that the BBL has been played.

I wonder if the BBL and a (performance wise) stronger Australian cricket team has had an effect on A-League crowds and interest.

It might have a bit, but look at Perth's last crowd at the Victory game. That was over 12k and was also a day after what I'm pretty sure was a sell-out crowd at the Scorchers last game at the WACA. So the Kewell effect was able to pull Perth's best crowd of the season straight after the Warne effect. I'd say Perth's issues are more to do with the performance of the club and the owner.

The BBL was always going to be a big competitor to the A-League as cricket is well and truly entrenched in the Australian sporting psyche.

Gold Coast, though, surely has to start doing something drastic to try and get some decent attendances. Their highest season attendance is 6927 and their average is about 4k. Compare that with the Titans who have averaged about 20k between 2007-10. Obviously there are no issue with a lack of sports fans, transport or the stadium- they have just failed to connect with the community.

Wellington's averaging a bit under 8k (nearly twice GC's average) so they are doing OK, not great.

Cheers for that app!! Really handy :)

Perth Glory problem is that the brand is now almost toxic. It will take some real hard work and new personal to fix it.

One thing about the crowd was that it was a night match. Night matches in Perth are the way to go this time of year, and probably fit in better for television anyway.

The Scorchers crowd was almost independent of Warney, the WACA has being at close to full capacity for almost every game (except members).

I'm more interested in how the BBL may have effected crowds in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney but there is no evidence that it really has.

Okay, so week 15s numbers are a little late. I'll hopefully post the week 16 numbers on Wednesday after the games. Week 15 wasn't that great getting the 4th worse weekly average so far. While the Victory pulled in a 20k+ game, it was weighed down by two Heart games, a Gold Coast, and a Sydney regional game that was a make-up from the game rescheduled from Week 9. However, the attendance is still better than the last two seasons and just a bit behind the season 1 and season 4 numbers.

Sheesh. I suck. I had the file all set to go, just didn't copy and paste it into the thread. Well, after a couple of good games, the regional games are becoming more and more of a bust, with Adelaide being the latest victim. It will be interesting to see if they continue these next season.

It is starting to look like the A-league will drop below the 10K average before season end. :(

Most likely it won't. Every season so far has ended an average of 525 higher than where it was at this point in the season.

Won't happen, heading into the business end now. A lot of people will start jumping on bandwagons come the big, season-defining games.

Also, the regional round is a good idea being executed poorly, this week's being a case in point: Newcastle and Adelaide mean nothing to Bathurst, it's a varsity town but the game's in the holidays, etc.

What sort of advertising have they been doing for the regional rounds?

They did a bit for the Campbelltown one, but then started the game at 5:30pm on a working weekday. I knew people who actually had tickets but couldn't go, because they were still at work.

Yeah, before we even get to marketing the planning has been sub-par.

Yup. It has made things hella easy for me. This is how the a-league website used to look. It was awesome. Everything was easy to find and informative.
