Belmont isn't ideal, certainly, because the subway doesn't go there. But they do pack in about 100,000 people for Stakes day every year, a good chunk of whom take the LIRR there and back, and the rest of whom drive, so it's silly to say it would be inaccessible for a 25,000 to 35,000 seat soccer game. I've been there for a couple of full-capacity stakes days, both on the train from the city and driving, and it took a while to get out but not any longer than it would take to get back to Brooklyn from the Meadowlands on the bus. And a soccer crowd would probably be a third of the size of a Belmont Stakes crowd. The idea that they wouldn't be able to attract fans because of the $13 fare doesn't seem very plausible, either, given that plenty of MLS fans in other parts of the country pay $15-$20 every game for parking. This reminds me of the old plan to build a MetroStars stadium at Aqueduct. If I remember right, the plan was that the stands would roll forward over the track on soccer days, and roll back to reveal the track on race days, with the soccer field in the racing infield.
Could run a ~12-minute shuttle from Jamaica, too. Definitely a weaker option than Queens if you actually have that choice. But if the choice was Belmont or nothing? Seems like a no brainer to me.
Looks like Belmont was looked at by MLS, not FCNY: http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/sections/mls2.php?article_id=29010 "There is, however, another issue to consider – a stadium. The Cosmos had scouted various sites in the city, including near the Queensboro Bridge and in Brooklyn, according to sources, but nothing definite has evolved. MLS also has considered Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., in suburban Long Island, according to another source."
If it is absolutely impossible to put a sss in NYC, then I think that this could also be a good solution. Better Long Island than NJ. But however I hope that at the end of the day we will have a soccer stdium in Queens !!!!
BB stands for "Borough Boys", you know, sort of the MLS2NYC counterpart to the ESC, except, you know, the BBs actually do and achieve things off of soccer web sites.
I was never hurt, just angry that a bunch of dorks put their petty, honeycomb hideout concerns ahead of country. 8675309!
Energy Drink "resonsible for bastardizing the image and brand of the team to suit their own image and agenda." Its only fitting that you lost to the LA Galaxy.....
True story - i once saw a guy i knew from HS at a sporting event - nice guy but not the kind i wanted to hang out with. We were all there and he was hounding me for my number to get together. I gave him 867 5309 and the ********ing hoople had no clue. He didnt even realize the 3 rows in front of and behind me pissing their pants. He was like "Great man, lets grab a beer"
I don't start chants. Not my bag. But racist chants like that? That sounds like an ESC special to me. The BBs and AONYC have been outspoken about some of the racist chants we've been hearing lately. That shit don't fly with us.
Not at all - this chant wouldn't fly with any of our members. We arent fans of chants like that, nor would we start anything that can even remotely be misconstrued as racist. Our chants are soccer based, we don't call anyone a 3rd world country, we actually have confronted people who try to start that. We dont tell a specific cultural group to go back to X Neighborhood. We keep our chants to the soccer field. We might say shit like "feck X national team" but that is purely based on Soccer. Shit, we have in the past allowed Mexican Americans into our parties to watch the matches and even defended them when fans tried to start shit. But to the point stated above - this needs to get back on topic now because its not even getting to a pissing match, its starting to get to a very sensitive area. I had to chime in though for the record because as a group we have 0 tolerance for racism, fascism, homophobia, sexism etc. Lets talk about Belmont.
A rope, a tree .. is racist? As a non-white, racially sensitive dude I gotta say I'm not really seeing it.
Unless of course the referee was non white, then it would be overtly racist and to a certain extent almost criminal.
