Don't count on the wings. they need a bigger stadium in detroit. Maybe they could put a smaller hockey team inside this new stadium. Like the old Detroit Vipers. I sure enjoyed their games at the Palace.

I can't get in his head, but I doubt he's that dumb. If you could retro-fit an ancient stadium to current Big Four standards for only $50 million, they would have done it already for either the Joe Louis or the Palace (which isn't even ancient).

If he's not off his rocker about the $50 million figure in the first place, then that's a pretty good bargain for just a good MLS venue. Whatever else you get in there is kind of gravy. He can also reduce the size of the parking lot to recoup some of the investment. (I figure he doesn't need the entire Lions parking lot, as his three projects together have a capacity of 10,000 less than the Silverdome for Lions games, and there's no way all three will ever be filled at the same time.)

Indeed. I always figured that he could afford to indulge in some out-there concepts on this property because he's only put like $7 million into it total (for the auction and some refurbishment), and he could always take the wrecking ball to it, break up property, resell to ordinary real estate investors and recoup that much.

And this plan is pretty 'out-there', enough that it's either unfeasible or visionary. I can't tell which.

I definitely agree with the logic, but if there are two cities in the US that can go by their nicknames and readily be identified, it's Detroit and Pittsburgh. Plus, it's not unprecedented in American sports, with the NBA's Golden State Warriors.

Regardless, I just hope this comes to fruition and that it's another success story for MLS somewhere down the road.

Forget about the Red Wings in the Silverdome. Mike Ilitch is 100% committed to A) keeping the Wings in the city of Detroit, and B) having the Wings in a building that he owns, not necessarily in that order. The idea of the Red Wings playing in the suburbs is as likely as changing their name.

And there is considerable doubt that this will ever come off, but only because it is contingent on having an MLS franchise to play there. It isn't a case of, "build it and they will come," because doing this massive renovation on spec would be patently idiotic. The lower level would be the source of secondary income for the soccer stadium, but it can't (financially speaking, anyway) support the place by itself.

The Golden State Warriors are pretty much the only team that still does it and they're hardly one of the leading lights of the NBA. I just can't see it happening myself especially in this brand orientated age. Detroit Motor City FC might work but it still sounds clunky.

I do think "Golden State Warriors" is poor branding, but on the other hand a whole lot more people can readily identify what metro area "Motor City" would be than "Golden State."

the Warriors are so named because they made an effort in the early 70's to serve as a home team for both the Bay Area and San Diego. Plus, they were playing in Oakland and using San Francisco in their name had become a liability... it's not a model we should follow, even if Motor City is amongst the best known city nicknames in the world.

The plans looks fine, but call me when they announce how it's being financed.

The Silverdome owner wants to spend $50 mil to renovate. His net worth is $805 mil.

That is 6% of his net worth. If I spent 6% of my net worth its like buying a new Ford focus. I think we found how to finance it already.

Well said.! I think all the numbers make total sence 1% of the purchase price to buy the dome and 6% of his net worth to renovate by what I see those #s are in check and make sence ! Also why would anyone say how they are financing a purchase or a renovation would you ?

there is no way in hell that any of this could be done for just $50 million and Oakland County isn't giving him any kind of money to get this done

New England Patriots. Very successful, not named after their city or state. Not that I support the idea, but this example runs contrary to yours of the GS Warriors.

I'm good with any name as long as it's not something stupid like:

    Detroit Rockers
    Detroit Safari
    Detroit Neon
    Detroit Drive
    Detroit Ignition

It's not what he's saying that's the problem (although as a prospective engineer I'm obligated to disagree). It's the way he conveys it. His attitude towards it. And, above all, the closed-mindedness he has on the whole deal.

Well there's that, and the whole idea that MLS is going to be favorably inclined to award a franchise to an owner that's going to have to liquidate 70%+ of their "fortune" to create this facility and pay the expansion fee.

I see that my reputation precedes me. Obviously people follow my work in the "upper fora" on this topic. To answer your questions: No, I was not abused as a child and the reason for my "dickitude" is that I don't suffer liars easily.

Typical response from people that hate it when facts challenge their beliefs.

Much more to the point. Don't for get that AICP status for the Regional/City Planning work either.

Prospective Engineer? That's a new term. I don't recall it under the steps in the PE licensure. What is it that you disagree with? That it might be hard for hockey or basketball players to perform between a forest of columns holding up a couple of acres of soccer field with a foot of snow sitting on it in December?

I'm far from closed minded on the deal, as I've stated many times, with enough time & money, you can make just about any thing stand up. You just pass an event horizon whereby you would have to have an event daily in any of the 3 venues to make the facility pay back the investment. I know that's not something engineers have to consider since they're just there to do the math to make sure it stands up or that the water gets into and out of the building and the AC keeps it cool, or in the case of the lowest of engineers, civil engineers, that there is enough parking and that stormwater doesn't flow into the building.

Mike, I usually admire your dickitude, since it's generally well aimed and on point. But in this case, I think you're going a bit overboard with the "lies" stuff. There is a difference between statements with which you disagree and lies. It's not like they're making up the rules of architecture as they go along, or that the plans and renderings weren't done by a well respected firm with a long history of stadium design.

If you can come up with some evidence that Rosetti told them that they couldn't possibly do it for $500M and the Greek family whose name I don't care to mis-spell just disregarded it and said it anyway, THEN you can claim that they are lying. Until then, you're just being needlessly dickish, bordering on assholian.

This is a "lie" in your world? Seriously? Even if they had ever actually said that, it's at most an honest difference of opinion, and nothing more.

Wow, it really seems like you're going out of your way to attack people who really haven't warranted such borderline slander. Or libel, whatever. What's your horse in this race? I don't even see the sort of irrational exuberance around here that would ordinarily get your hackles up, and warrant a good slapping down.

I mean, I'm still somewhat skeptical that this can come off, but it's not like merely proposing it constitutes a lie.

Well, I really hope that they are being advised by a competent firm, but when the Astrolopithicus family makes a statement that they're planning on spending less than half what it took to build any of the last set of SSS, that raises some serious questions on either them or their advisers or (hopefully) the people who wrote the story.

50 million buys you a new 1,000-1,200 student high school. It doesn't build you a field in the sky over a hockey arena & performance hall.

    Needlessly? ;) C'mon, Scott.

As stated by the Don, the fee has gone up. They've repeatedly stated that they've applied to MLS, yet MLS seems averse to mention that, unlike they've done with other no-hoper bids.

Perhaps, Scott, you are right. Liar might be, "over the top", but it dangerously close to being a lie when you publish an image w/o any structure and say you're going to build it for the cost of a new high school.

    Being a dick.

Maybe the economic downturn has just made me mean.

When you come out and say you're going to build this for half the cost of a new facility, inside an existing facility, that may require removal of a significant part of the existing facility, one that was never designed to be either "open" of have another building inside of it, it snuggles right up to "lie".

I don't know what you are referring to when it comes to the word 'fortune'. But the Apostolopoulos family is reported to be worth $800 million. The MLS expansion fee was $30 mil (maybe $40 mil now). I don't see how that equals liquidating 70%+ of their 'fortune'?

If they do get a MLS team I think the team will come first then the renovation. If they eventually decide to do this plan maybe it could be completed in stages. Do the roof and the field first, and work on the other two arenas a few years down the road. Also, they have mentioned saving money in construction, because they can work 24/7 under the dome with no weather stops and with 3 different work shifts.

My thoughts are the silverdome owners are doing this to generate excitement and to garner interest from MLS executives and to grow the Detroit fan base. It's essentially a marketing scheme. Maybe this plan helps get the ball rolling faster with the MLS executives. What you might call a lie, I call marketing.

Then when they finally do secure a team, the new Detroit team can play in the Silverdome right now (they could play next season if they wanted to). They can throw tarps over the upper bowl and they are ready to go (it's been done before).

5-10 years down the road they could complete the Silverdome triple arena renovation extravaganza after they have secured a franchise.

Personally, I welcome the 'dictitudeness' it means their plan is half working... There is no such thing as bad news.
