No and, clearly he felt his identity was German because they tried to move heaven and earth to get him eligible. Then he fell back on the country that chased his family out when he was a kid.

That and the US had invested significant money in developing him after he was discovered while tagging along with his sister to her tennis camp in Fla. And he was quoted that it would be a betrayal if he turned away from the USA after wearing its crest as a youth.

Neven and Rossi are interesting cases because they are so completely different. Rossi was born in the USA and raised a Jersey kid, yet he never wanted to do anything other than play for Italy. He made no bones about it. Never was almost completely the opposite-- US youth (through the US residency program) verbally committed to the US, then he felt strongly German enough to explore all options of becoming eligible for Germany, and THEN he decided that he'd like to play for Serbia.

Playing for Serbia is a good choice- they are an exciting team and should be on the rise for awhile. But the way Neven went about switching his allegiances (especially as his family has stayed in the USA and built a very good life here after Germany told them that they were no longer welcome), well that's probably never going to sit well with a lot of us.

I'm not going to crap of Serbia here- they are a good team with good fans who are rightfully disappointed in missing out on Euro 2014. As for Neven, though, couldn't happen to a nicer person.

From what I read in the German media, Sammer posed the question to FIFA and they said, "No, and here is why..." and it pretty much concluded at that. I'm not sure there was much moving of "Heaven and Earth".

The country didn't chase them out...the current government situation and instability did. Huge difference. Germans also fled Hitler, not Germany during the late 30's. Castro did this to Cuba. Though the people that escaped have been welcomed by the US, ask them and they will tell you thy are Cuban first and foremost.

I cannot disagree with the rest of your post but will add that he simply was not interested in becoming an American player. He seems to be labelled as a traitor because of this.

Perhaps I over state things a bit and should apologize for that. However, Neven is such an interesting case- first he's American, then German, then Serb. It's fine that he ultimately chose Serbia, but it sure didn't seem to us like he did it because he always yearned to play for them (because he clearly didn't).

Also it's not true that he wasn't interested in becoming an American player-- he was an American player capped in official competitions with our youth sides. He also publicly said that switching would be betrayal. Why should we not hold him to his word?

It's water under the bridge now. He made a choice that will likely be a good one for him and I hope he continues to be very successful. I just wouldn't mind playing (and beating :D) Serbia in a meaningful match one day.

Of course he is. This is a US-based message board.............

The overwhelming majority of people are apathetic when it comes to Neven, hence the fact that his Yanks Abroad thread is basically nonexistent.

But it was Neven himself who said this.....................(as alluded to by firststar)

I've played [for the U.S.], I've been in [U.S. U-17 national team)] residency, so I'm an American," Subotic said. "And I've worn the crest, and that's also a thing that you have to respect. If you wear it once you're not going to wear another crest.

"That would kind of be like back-stabbing, I would say. I'm an American 'til the end.

"America was like a second chance to make something of ourselves. I'd like to think I did accomplish something. I made the national team, I went to college and this country made it possible. It's my way of kind of repaying."

So you tell me? If you were a US fan would you feel stabbed in the back? If any European posts something in a thread and asks why US fans are pissed about losing Neven...............these quotes should appear automatically in the next post.

Meh, he was a kid - still is. He made the mistake of promising what he felt was right at the time. Pissed off fans? Sure, rightly so - but a "traitor"? Come on, that's a bit too much. Kid had a change of heart and that is that. People commit to life when they engaged in marriage...then the divorce comes. I'm not sure we should label all of them "traitors' for going back on their vows and ultimately, their word. It's still just a game, a sport and for you and me - a hobbie we love to follow.

He also played in a bunch of meaningful qualifiers in front of passionate fans and in some great European cities. Meanwhile we just played in front of 2,000 Americans and 15,000 Ecuadorians and didn't come close to sniffing a goal. Hard to blame the guy.

Isn't that the definition of traitor. And I think we all mean traitor in the soccer sense which a few thousand steps below a traitor in the national security sense. Soccer Traitor is not equal to a political treasonous act. He's no Anwar al-Awlaki.

As others have said........"traitor" in the soccer sense.

The overwhelming majority of us are reasonable people that understand these things.

When I say that I'd like to saw Neven's head off with a kitchen knife, and feed his corpse to my pigs.........it's not reality. Frankly, I'm too lazy.

I don't know whether I'm more shocked at how you conjured up such a violent fictitious scenario or the fact you have pigs!?

Actually, Snatch is my favorite movie.

I was going to come on here, and mention that pigs can go thru a 200 pound man in around 8 minutes...........but was sure it was too obvious. Somebody would have seen thru it.

I didn't even have to do it. You were on to me. So no, SuDano........I don't have pigs. :) I am capable, however, of coming up with violent scenarios in my head of things to do to Neven Subotic. I've always been partial to impaling, but that can be quite messy.

In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary... come again?

Serbia has been a perennial underachiever on the soccer scene with the exception of the Radomir Antic reign there (ex-Real, ex-Barcelona, ex-Atletico Madrid manager, among other squads).

They got into a tough group in the WC (Germany, Ghana and Australia), losing to Ghana on a fluke goal (mindless handball PK), beating Germany (after Klose's ejection) and then going down to Australia in the deciding match. After that, the Serbian officials got mad at Antic and fired him. It didn't help that he was suspended by FIFA for four matches for insulting a ref at the WC.

    It's been downhill ever since.

Yep, awesome fans who try to kill the goalkeeper and don't care if they cost their team a chance at qualifying for their major continental tournament by trying to kill their goalkeeper on the field. If that's passion? I'll take 2,000 American fans.

    ...in a soccer sense.

Love the Snatch references, just saw that for the first time recently. Unfortunately (fortunately?) for us, "ze Germans" are already here.

You should talk to the Pope about that one.

Anyway, he was a kid and it's a free country (over here, anyway) and he made his decision. He will play in some awesome matches there and will travel much less for international games (making his club coaches much happier). He'll probably play less in the WC too, as Serbia have a fairly hard road to qualify. It's a trade-off, can't blame him for the decision.

But we still don't have to like it.

Not only that, they cost their team 3 points in Italy last October when the match was abandoned due to rioting by Serbian fans. Italy was awarded the points.

I was actually in Italy and we were looking forward to watching the match at a pub. I remember watching a Serbian Hoolie in a ski mask, sitting on top of a barrier, cutting the netting separating fans with a knife. Seem like a nice group of people.

    Have fun Nevin!

Why wouldn't a club wait until summer to sign him? He's out for the year

Count me as very skeptical regarding all of these rumors.
