I did some stat analysis of the Mexico vs Chile game on September 4th. A long time ago I know, blame it on laziness, procrastination, and how time consuming this process is. But I'm figuring out ways to work faster so hopefully I'll have the Mexico vs Brasil stats up quicker. Anyway, one caveat first. Univision has a habit of showing replays 3-4 times, or putting fans on the screen, or the teams' suplentes on the screen, while the game is still being played, so my stats aren't 100% complete. Also, some things are a little bit subjective. At what point exactly does a lateral pass become a forward pass for example. I used my own judgement. Overall team completed pass percentage: 325/382, 85% Individual completed pass percentage: Gio Dos Santos: 27/33, 81%. 13/14 bp (back passes) 8/9 lp (lateral passes) 83 minutes played 6/10 fp (forward passes) Aldo de Nigris: 6/8, 75%. 2/3 bp, 4/4 lp, 0/1 fp 45 minutes played Hobbit: 11/16, 68%. 6/6 bp, 2/4 lp, 3/6 fp 60 minutes played Castro: 55/62, 88%. 18/18 bp, 22/23 lp, 15/21 fp 90 minutes played Marquez: 48/53, 90%. 4/4 bp, 14/14 lp, 30/35 fp 90 minutes played Duenas: 30/32, 93%. 5/5 bp, 3/3 lp, 22/24 fp 90 minutes played Cherokee: 39/45, 86%. 16/16 bp, 9/9 lp, 14/20 fp 90 minutes played Aldrete: 33/38, 86%. 16/16 bp, 7/7 lp, 10/15 fp 78 minutes played Zavala: 41/47, 87%. 11/12 bp, 11/11 lp, 19/24 fp 90 minutes played Velarde: 7/13, 53%. 1/2 bp, 5/8 lp, 1/3 fp 64 minutes played Chicharito: 6/8, 75%. 3/4 bp, 2/3 lp, 1/1 fp 45 minutes played Barrera: 4/5, 80%. 1/1 bp, 2/2 lp, 1/2 fp 30 minutes played Guardado: 12/15, 80%. 5/5 bp, 4/4 lp, 3/6 fp 26 minutes played Salcido: 4/4, 100%. 1/1 bp, 1/1 lp, 2/2 fp 12 minutes played Torrado: 2/3, 66%. 1/1 bp, 1/1 lp, 0/1 fp 7 minutes played Individual possession: ball lost (bl), having the ball taken from you, vs ball recovered (br), intercepting a pass or taking the ball from an opponent Gio Dos Santos: 3 bl, 9 br Aldo de Nigris: 4 bl, 1 br Hobbit: 4 bl, 3 br Castro: 0 bl, 6 br Marquez: 0 bl, 13 br Duenas: 0 bl, 6 br Cherokee: 1 bl, 7 br Aldrete: 0 bl, 4 br Zavala: 4 bl, 9 br Velarde: 2 bl, 4 br Chicharito: 2 bl, 1 br Barrera: 4 bl, 0 br Guardado: 1 bl, 2 br Salcido: 0 bl, 1 br Torrado: 0 bl, 1 br Individual crosses. I classified crosses into the box as their own category of pass since their completion rate is much lower than for other types of passes. For me a completed cross is a cross where a team mate either receives the cross or shoots directly. Gio Dos Santos: 0/2 cr Hobbit: 0/4 cr Castro: 0/1 cr Cherokee: 1/2 cr Aldrete: 0/1 cr Velarde: 0/1 cr Individual clearances. A clearance for me is when a player doesn't attempt to possess the ball but simply tries to kick/head it towards another part of the field, usually away from his own goal. With these, the first number in the ratio is clearances that were recovered by your own team, the second number is total clearances. So 0/1 for example is one clearance that was recovered by other team. Castro: 0/1 cl Marquez: 4/7 cl Duenas: 3/8 cl Cherokee: 3/5 cl Aldrete: 1/6 cl Zavala: 0/3 cl Chicharito: 1/1 cl Barrera: 0/1 cl Guardado: 0/1 cl Salcido: 1/2 cl Torrado: 0/1 cl Last but not least, individual shots. First number in the ratio is shots on target, second number is total shots. Gio Dos Santos: 1/2 sh Castro: 1/1 sh Duenas: 0/1 sh Velarde: 0/1 sh Chicharito: 0/1 sh Barrera: 0/2 sh Guardado: 1/1 sh (goal)
Analysis & observations, granted for 1 game extrapolating a rep, but it's a start, more opportunities to come, hopefully with more stats... Velarde and de nigris demonstrate the difference in quality in a short period from their still young generation to the even younger kids that sparked the phrase golden generation, they can be very good, but they cannot rep as impressively as chich and gio do for the golden gen. Velarde=Club boxer? Or will he still improve? Israel Castro more impressive than European experienced Gerardo torrado but then torrado had few minutes to warm up. Torrado age may explain difference, 32 is a bit over the soccer player physical prime, his knees must be feeling it by now, Castro is still 30. Dueñas impressed more than it showed previously and not sure why he's so unpopular in some of the forums. I don't like Chepo bringing all his Toluca oldies all the time, but sometimes they do have quality. Duenas is doing well. Marquez still rocking them, still passes like a barca player capable of tiki-taka style. Barca may not be holding him until retirement, but he still earns his bank, new York is full of soccer newbies. Zavala did very well for a new guy. Hobbit is not ready yet and continues to disappoint and it must be apparent to most observers by now, their eyes were not deceiving them, it's in the numbers. Also Cherokee did well, passing, crossing, and recovering! Aldrete did okay to good, mainly on recoveries to losses. Who were all these individuals pressured by ? Obviously whoever faced Alexis sanchez had pressure.
Also, check out memo's wiki stats, it shows so much improvement, current stats by tala era are better for the n.t. Than old stats for gio, but gio has really been on an upswing. His latest stats have been an improvement. Brazil was always an issue, as was the Netherlands and of course Spain. These are practical statistics, would love to see how french gio deals with top teams today as he continues to grow. I would love to see more statistics against top teams by top goalkeepers, but hoe often do we see a brazil level friendly lik this month's?

If memo gets more consistent against brazil now that he's getting experience in Europe, he should get more consistent call ups, but his 07 history trails him, one clean sheet and one with 3 goals allowed. Maybe this game will help him turn the page on his past.
