Opportunity for what exactly? I don't understand what you're getting at exactly? You want the Cosmos people to invest in the Mets?

What opportunity? What are you talking about?

The Wilpons exploring options means they want someone else to buy a stake in their team because they need the cash.

Right It could be that they are looking for a NEW investor or NEW opportunities can also mean that they are also looking for other ways into inject cash in their pockets.

The Cosmos and WIlpons have talked business before. I don't see the Cosmos buying into the Mets but they could work together and it benefit the Mets financially.

It is not a given but there is an opportunity there

Show me a scenario where this is possible. I don't see any that address the current needs of the Wilpons.

Any income opportunities from the Cosmos is not going to pay out quickly enough to help the Wilpons. They need money NOW, not in two-three years. Also, getting the Cosmos off the ground would need a significant initial investment by the Wilpons and if they could afford that, they wouldn't be looking for someone to buy part of the Mets.

Well, you always hear about the Wilpon's land from Garber - the Cosmos could buy or lease some of that land and the Wilpons could ask for money up front - thats a possibility.

If the Wilpon's rent Citi Field for a Cosmos team (yea in 2013) thats money in the pocket of the wilpons at no cost.

However, this might be moot - seeing rumors of the Wilpons selling parts of the teams to family members and friends that would equal that 200 Million.

However, those are two scenarios that help the Wilpons make money off any Cosmos venture.

Right - 100% but as a Mets fan (taking the Cosmos part out of this) you wonder how much they really need that 200 Million.

Im hearing that the reason the deal went dead is that Einhorn was pushing MLB to accept him as a Majority owner right off the bat (even though the deal stated that would only happen like 5 years down the road). The Mets then asked MLB to not vote and cut the deal (or something like that)

So that to me does not sound like a group that is desperate, but then again, this is the Wilpons lol

They wouldn't be looking for a bailout if they weren't in financial trouble. I'm going to bet that the reason why they nixed the deal is because they would have lost control of the team and the whole reason for the bailout was so that they wouldn't lose control of the team. They want the best of both worlds, the money and control of the team.

    How much financial trouble?

I agree - selling to this guy and giving him a path to majority ownership shows me they were in some shit but now they backed out of that and rumors have them selling to friends and family for the 200 million - shows me they have no intention of selling the team - which shows me they must be improving with that 1 billion suit possibly being thrown out. That cuts their "on the hook" from 1 billion to about 300 million - so they are liable for at least 700 million more less - and then im sure they might go for a settlement on that 300 million.

HOwever - i dont see them investing in the Cosmos at all - i see them more as they bring the land type of thing - which could be money in their pocket long term but yea - not short term.

And this has absolutely nothing to do with the Einhorn situation or potential ownership of the Mets. So the thread has nothing to do with anything.

Except they never intended to sell the team. They were basically using the team as collateral in order to get a loan from Einhorn. Einhorn, on the other hand, wanted the team and was hoping to get it "cheap". Wilpon and Co. are still looking for $200 million in cash, they are just changing their strategy hoping to get multiple investors at $20 million a pop so they don't have to worry about losing control of the team.

Wilpon is still very much in trouble. There is no evidence of the Madoff case going in any direction at the moment.

Actually most lawyers with an eye on the case believe that Judge Rakoff will push hard on a settlement that will mostly, if not entirely, nix the $700 million principal payment. If I were the madoffs, i wouldn't start spending that money, but after the related second circuit decision, I think they can at least put off selling the store until with the educated guess that they won't have to pay all that money.

Moreover, Judge Rakoff moves fast, and requires the parties to move fast. There's going to be plenty of pressure on the parties to settle because he will brook no delay on the trial date -- and that trial will be crazy expensive for all sides.

Ha ha ... sometimes I read these pages and wonder if there isn't anything that can be heralded as a sign that the Cosmos are on their way back.
