I thought that the Cochrane sub was strange but then it looked like he might have had an injury. If you have to sub to close out a game, do you bring your slowest, least skilled and most uncoordinated player on? Have to second guess that move. me I bring my speediest player on and tell them to pester the guy with the ball, get possession and hold it. Schiller for Tierney was odd too

Inexperience or indiscipline/selfishness? I coach U17 players, young amateurs, who recognize when to do this...

Amen. I heard it explained to me that when you're shielding the ball, you have de facto possession (or something like that) so you can legally shield. Well, if you have de facto possession, then when the ball goes out of bounds, the other team should have de facto possession. =)

He did play well, but don't forget that he got beat twice early in the first half only to have folks on the line save him.

Anyway, for huge portions of that game it seemed like the Dynamo were on the soccer equivalent of a 5 on 3 power play. The just passed around the area probing for weaknesses and creating opportunity after opportunity.

And two of them were on the same play (the goal) in the 4th minute. Typical.

I'm not a Reis apologist by any stretch of the imagination, if anything I hope he's gone next year, but I don't think you can blame those two on him. The marking on those set pieces was pretty poor.

That was probably the best performance he's had for the Revs in years. In my eyes he's still the best goalie in the league in terms of reflex saves. However, his distribution skills were very poor last night, and it often hurt us in terms of maintaining possession. His positioning, perception of the ball's movement and trajectory, catching ability, and distribution skills are all pretty poor in my opinion. I think people often get too caught up in his highlight reel saves and don't pick up on his less noticeable weaknesses. I think we could easily find a comparable goalie for half the price.

I think that may have been Reis' best game as a Rev. Hats off.

That game illustrated starkly what's wrong with the team. Even in the first half, when Houston was pressing us in our own end at home, the equalizer was always coming.

Alston, Barnes, and Cochrane are poor passers. They and Boggs gave the ball away almost every time they had it. Tierney does well when he isn't pressed, but can't save the ball without an outlet, and Barnes isn't it. Not that Phelan is the answer at CB, but you could immediately notice the difference in distribution when he subbed infor Cochrane.

You could see that Houston was pressing high, particularly on the wings, because our players can't keep the ball. They aren't good enough. A major reason that we can't score is that we are always pinned in our end. We will never be a winning team with them starting. The days when a good MLS defender just had to man mark are over. Man marking is crucial, but it is not enough.

It's distressing to see Ryan Johnson, Sheannon Williams, and Geoff Cameron, (and there are probably others - I don't even count Charlie Davies) who came from Revolution turf, slip through the fingers of the organization. They are all better than who we have.

Moffat pushed Phelan into the boards as Phelan was shielding the ball as it was going out of bounds. Reis took exception to that and jumped in Moffats face. Couple pushes and that was it. My bet was that Reis was tossed for his reaction to Kennedy and now what he did to Moffat. that was handbags at 5 paces

The Revs blow a lead. The Revs blow a late lead. The Revs blow points at home. Move along folks, nothing to see here … nothing we haven’t seen before anyway.

With those subs tonight I think Nicol pretty much is saying that he doesn’t care.

Just once … just FFS just once, can we actually go for a second goal when we’re up 1-0? It’s pretty pathetic that right after we scored, I heard multiple variations of “And here comes bunkerball!” Every single person who pays attention to this team knew that bunkerball was coming. And every single person that pays attention to this team knew the tying goal was coming.

Luckily we’re so good that the front office just doesn’t seem to care to make changes. And why should they? It’s not like their jobs are on the line.

I’d like to send out a hearty “Well done Sir” to Matt Reis. He was amazing last night. Whatever fine the league imposes, I’m willing to chip in. God I hate Houston, buncha hacks. I expect every one of you to vote for Matt as Man of the Match! ;)

Just an afterthought, throughout the whole game, I did find myself thinking that Boggs (while losing possession as much as everyone else) played well last night, and I am not the biggest Zak Boggs guy, but IMHO he played a hell of a lot better last night than his usual self.

    Also

did anyone else catch Mansally's faceplant onto the concrete? That was one of the few moments where I actually winced (aside from the on field garbage).

He looked like he ate shit hard on the outside, I thought for sure he was going to stand up and spit out a mouth full of teeth.

That's not quite how I saw it. Matt had his hands on Moffat's face during the altercation, and I assume that why he was ejected. No excuse, but he had to have been frustrated at that point in the match. Moffat rightly given second yellow for his needless and stupid challenge.

When Pat came in for Cochrane my comment was "garbage in, garbage out". The sub to make with Ryan coming out was to move Barnes to the middle and put in a left back. Only, oh darn, we don't have a left back on our roster. Nicol's coaching or subbing may or may not be poor, but it's hard to see anyone winning with that roster. We're discussing which of the many sub-par starters should be subbed out and which sub-par players should replace them.

You'll want to watch the game over. He was a black hole of possession and made some really terrible mistakes. Even Feldman wasn't apologetic of his poor crossing and terrible runs.

This......Even the new guy was frustrated with Boggs and even yelled at him for taking a shot.

I do agree that he has some flaws, but I think you're going a bit overboard.

People do get caught up in the spectacular reflex saves (and he may be the best in MLS at close-in reflex saves, but no way best overall).

And, yes he was pretty spectacular for 89 minutes, but he coughed up the tying goal. To be a top goalie, you have to make all the saves you can reach. To start with.
We played pretty well for the first 10-15 minutes, but then we just started "holding on". I don't know if it's Nicol's design (all his subs were defense-oriented), or the players, but it's clear it's a low-percentage strategy.

Even if we had held on and won, I wasn't about to take any solace from that. We played piss-poor football and it was really ugly to watch.
Moffat shoved Phelan into Reis. It's a dirty play and a cowardly way to get a cheap-shot in on the goalie.

I thought the problem with the goal was that the corner occurred at all. Phelan runs down the ball then tries to avoid it at the last minute. It hits his back or the back of his head and goes out. I haven't seen a replay yet but I thought Matt should have been able to get to the ball before it went out, but in any case it was a joke of a corner to give up.
