When was the last time a US / Mexico game didn't sell out? Philly shouldn't get a game for awhile, but they'll get one in a few months once again if the pattern holds up.
Couldn't even fill the lower bowl, why was this game in a place that has had several games within the last few months? Seems like the 30,000 announced is stretched at best. Bay Area had close to 40,000 to catch US / Japan in 06 in a baseball stadium.
I posted this in the Philly thread, so Im gonna post it here also. I went to a viewing tonight, & usually you can hear AO loud & clear through the sound on the broadcasts (examples: US vs. Columbia & US vs. Turkey), but tonight, it was piss poor. We didn't hear one chant during the entire viewing. Hell, it sounded like r bar was louder than the stadium. Maybe its time for some people to cut back on drinking. Also, nice to see a 40k show up to this game, compared to 56k for Real Madrid/Union. Club over country? I do not represent AOTucson. Its my own opinion
How much of this was it to being in Killjoy Eagles Stadium? I noticed they only let you guys have a tiny corner for banners when they normally let you cover an entire side of the stadium. Weak shit by USSF. I heard horns though but no drums. Only chant I heard via TV the entire game was You Suck Asshole in the second half.
think it was a lot of things really. the stadium policies didnt help, the stadium size killed any atmosphere as well. also, as nyrmetros mentioned, the crowd in the SS was short of some people that usually help to organize the singing and bring it for a full 90. it felt like some kind of pre-season warmup. USSF and FMF made their money now we can go back to a more regular pattern of friendlies hopefully.
to all those bitching about numbers: do you guys honestly think this would have sold out at Gillette, RFK, FedEx, The Shoe, meadowlands? 30k on a wednesday at 9pm in a meaningless game isnt phenomenal but it also isnt the end of the world people
I thought you said you liked coordinating the TIFO? Maybe I read that post or misinterpretted that phone conversation...
I would assume it had something to do with us just playing them a month ago in a very meaningful game. USA fans AND Mexican fans both stayed away because of the above I'm sure.
That as well. An ill timed cash grab that probably backfired financially. How much does it cost to rent out the stadium?
I believe I heard that the Spain game cost the USSF $2 million dollars to pay both the Spanish federation and rent the stadium. They earned $4 million estimated by selling around 60k in tickets. Don't hold me to those numbers because I'm going off memory. So if the FMF and USSF didn't do a ticket sharing deal, which I believe they have done in the past, and the Eagles stadium charged the same rate as Foxboro, the USSF wouldn't have made any money. If they did a ticket sharing deal, we could guess that they made $1 million. ALL GUESSES to emphasize.
I'm not sure the timing after the Gold Cup had much to do with the attendance, but it has been over three years since we did have our last friendly with Mexico which was in February of 2008. Our last two friendlies against Mexico were in Glendale, Arizona and Houston, Texas both of which fell on Wednesdays and were complete sellouts. IMO Philly missed the opportunity to sellout (not even the lower bowl was full). Say what you want about it falling on a Wednesday / having just played them, but that was on the west coast something most of the east coast fans didn't attend. If we played England in NYC, then England played us again in NorCal, it's a different fanbase so there should be fans at the gates.
