will believe it when it's in my hands ugg i need a refresher though, i remember very little of the last couple in the series.
I held off reading a Feast for so long just so I didn't have a huge gap, can't wait for the 5th, hopefully we don't need 15 years to finish the series
I wouldn't have minded holding off on Feast - easily the most bloated and worst book in the series (it's not actively bad, just not as good as the prior 3). I'm guessing there were at least a few fights his editors lost on that one. There's one POV character whose chapters I began skipping and only one I found truly compelling.
for any history dudes out there The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire, only started reading but its fascinating as hell http://amzn.com/0674035194
I'm worried GRRM won't be able to finish the series. He is over 60 now and seems to take longer and longer for each book.
If he stopped going to every Con, signing, tea party, etc he would have finished these years ago. I am pretty sure that if you invited him over to tea and to discuss his books he would show up. Nice of him to be sure but would be even nicer, TO FINISH THE GODDAMN SERIES! If he pulls a Jordan I swear I will dig him up myself and put a pen in his hand.
Just finished The Tiger by John Valliant. It was fantastic. I cant recommend it enough. Remember the first time you saw Jaws and didnt want to take a bath after it? Now imagine that with tigers. You get a ton of Russian history, zoology, sociology, politics, etc all masterfully woven together in this nonfiction book. I get that some people may not like the digressions into Nazis living in a desert or nocturnal baboon habits but they do (eventually) highlight the point being made. Roman even gets a little if slightly derisive mention in the book. I really REALLY enjoyed this book.
The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Eco. I love Eco, but god damn it's hard to read him. He's too damn smart for his own good. It's incomprehensible to me how one person can know so much.
I had the same thought after reading Foucaults Pendulum (a book that Dan Brown also read by all accounts).
Dan Brown read a book? I read Eco in Russian, so maybe it creates a bit extra of "lost in translation" moments, but for me, The Island of the Day Before was beyond confusing. Now, In the Name of The Rose, everything made complete sense, though there were so many facts thrown at a reader, I thought my head would explode. Good thing Sean Connery decided to make a movie.
Foucault's Pendulum is one of the few books I've stopped reading halfway through. I just got tired of the information overload. Reminds me of Infinite Jest, another book I didn't really like very much.
I contemplated putting down The Island Of The Day Before. Its an exercise in rhetorical devices and period language though it was tough was worth it. Have you tried Baudolino? I thought that was great. RE: the Sean Connery movie. I saw that movie with my Mom (I was a teenager) and that kitchen scene was probably the most uncomfortable moment in my life.
question for all you GOT nerds, im assuming each season is a book in the series, and therefore ive watched 3/5. Im planning on reading the rest before i next season comes out. Can i do that or did they leave out too much to continue with the books, also, do the first three have enough unseen/read content that i can start by reading 1 2 3.
Season's 3 & 4 are book 3. Having heard friends talk about the happenings recently they still have a lot to show. I havent seen the past season of the show. I am a big fan of the books but not the HBO series. Personally, I think you should read the books regardless.
I'd suggest reading A Storm of Swords and go from there. Been a while since I've read the books, but they're definitely worth reading.
halfway through the first book (got the first 2 for free) really glad i started from the begining, for one thing you dont remember every detail from the show, but the book reveals so much more and watching the show kinda makes you appreciate it more. Looking forward to doeing the reverse in reading 4th and 5th and then watching the show afterwards.
If you're into the graphic novel thing, Fables is well worth a read and it's still ongoing. Would also suggest Y: The Last Man as well. Garth Ennis' Preacher is great fun if you're not offended easily.
The show sucks. Also tales of Dunc and Egg if you're waiting 10 years for the WOW. I'm Ken follet now, pillars of the earth.
