    In 1994, The Columbus Dispatch held a naming contest for the team. This was back when people still read the newspaper and sent letters, and were able to flood the mail room of the Dispatch with contest entries. The contest lasted just a month, but the newspaper still received thousands of entries. The contest was simple, asking that soccer fans send in names for their new team, and the people at the newspaper would do the rest.

    The paper decided that the name must be unique, versatile, appeal to the youth market, and most importantly capture the attitude and key values of the region or team it represents.

    What I find mildly amusing is that all the people posting and complaining about the name of our club and what our stadium will look like, not one of them is actually from Montreal..

    Just to let you know, we really don't care about what Johnny-know-it-all from middle America or some Euro poser thinks about our club's name and what our stadium will look like :rolleyes:..

    Touche. And yes, the "T" was on purpose.

    Going to be a lot of indoor MLS action early next year. Montreal will be playing under the blue roof.

    http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Saputo+Stadium+expansion+delayed/5117100/story.html

    some somewhat concerning developments although it's far from panic time I imagine

    You might remember past soccer moments at Olympic Stadium

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oRm07kL2bU"]‪Montreal Impact 2 Santos Laguna 0 CONCACAF Champions League‬‏ - YouTube[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DgOkYb01ZI"]‪Poland - USA 2007 U-20 World Cup highlights‬‏ - YouTube[/ame]

    I believe that this makes MLS the first league to use multiple former Olympic stadiums since the Bundesliga in 2005 (Olympic Stadium Munich and Olympic Stadium Berlin). (RFK also hosted some matches in 1996 although that's a bit different.)

    Yeah, I wasn't bothered by the fact they were delayed finding a bidder. But I'm a bit bothered that (if I'm reading it right) they still haven't found one. What if it just isn't possible to do what they're asking be done at the price they're willing to pay?

    they won't do exactly what they're currently asking to be done?

    or, they'll find some money (somewhere) to do what they're currently asking to be done?

    so it looks like team19 will be playing a small (or perhaps not so small) number of games in a temporary (and inappropriately sized) home venue -- not that there's anything wrong with that.

    I do wonder how that new plan and reality for the first part of 2012 will at all affect what MLS may be hoping/trying/willing to do with team20.

    this of course reminds me of the tug-of-war over the expansion fee.
    i wonder how much work thay can get done once the cold weather begins. obviously, now would have been the time to do it. a delay like this is a negative also for the overall launch of the mls franchise. why should anyone think about season tix while they're still dithering?

    Is it possible that Joey Saputo is playing MLS for the fool yet again???? Just like he did over the franchise fee? I could see him thinking that now they have been granted an MLS franchise, and are ready to start play, he can abandon his promise of an expanded and improved stadium in favor of keeping the smaller Saputo Stadium and playing bigger matches in the Olympic Stadium.

    Probably a reach......but I don't trust the little weasel!

    I'm fine with this. KC is doing great right now, but there is no guarantee that back-ending the schedule the way MLS teams almost always do when they're building a new stadium will not result in burnout over the second half of the season. There should be enough buzz about the team for them to draw well at Olympic Stadium. As long as it doesn't take them 15 years to build the new one, like it did the MetroStars, this shouldn't be a problem.

    Small point of clarification here re: Fire. Those Nike/X-Games loser names like Clash, Mutiny, and Burn, you both hit the nail on the head there. Revolution, horrible name that it is, at least has a reasonable tie in to the region. As for the Fire, they came into MLS in the first wave of expansion w/ the Fusion (ugh). The Fire were supposed to be called the Rhythm. I understand Nike had uniforms and logos pretty much ready to go. That name would have blended in with the other horrible original MLS names. And it sucks worse than any other name possible, really. Peter Wilt, then team GM dug in and said no way. The Fire are named after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The Fire was a significant event in both Chicago and world-architecture history (clearing the way for new building methods, shoreline reconfiguration, fire fighting methods, skyscrapers, etc.). The name has significant relevance to Chicago. Now it doesn't end in an S, and I generally don't like names that don't do that, but it is a serviceable team name and FAR from the category of names like Clash and Burn.

    +1. Fire is actually a good name, and not just by MLS standards, as evidenced by the fact that it hasn't (and hopefully never will) be abandoned (unlike Burn, Wiz & Clash -- whether Mutiny or Fusion would have survived is an unanswerable question).

    As for Impact? Not the best name in the league. But certainly not the worst, either.

    Saputo already has the money from the government to expand the stadium, so it isn't like he doesn't want to use that free money. The problem is that construction in Montreal is sometimes complicated and the occasional shakedown is expected on big projects. I'm guessing this will get done through some back channel negotiating somehow.

    Unfortunately, his show wasn't around in the mid '70s when the Big O was built.

    Holmes is in Toronto. I'm sure he could have a field day with BMO, though. :)

    Où est la stade du fromage? ;)

    I hope that little bit of french wasn't garbled too badly.

    Levity aside, I look forward to our next TFC road trip to Montreal. The expeditions have always been eventful and generally fun. Whether it be in the Big O or the new Saputo, I can't wait to jump on the train and head for Montreal in 2012.

    The sad thing was that we didn't get to go in 2011. :(

    This actually doesn't sound terribly different to what Union did to start off and it worked out fine for them. If Saputo Stadium is ready come, say, June it should be fine.
