It happened after the Sounders game. Two Sounders fans were hanging around outside of the stadium (near the eastside (Key Bank) exit when some douchebag walked up to them and said, "did you see this" while pointing at the ground, then gave them the finger and shouted "f**k you!" I told him to grow up and act his age and he walked away. The Sounders fans seemed grateful.

There should be *no* room for this bs inside or around our stadium. Denigrate all of the players on the field if you want, but the fans are fans just like you and I, here in town to watch a soccer match. They're not the enemy. The enemy are the idiots on sports radio who say soccer isn't American or soccer isn't a sport, etc etc. If you act like an ass you deserve to be called out as an ass. What are you, 13?

By the way, this sort of idiocy seems to be reserved solely against Sounders fans, we've had traveling fans from other clubs here this year that have been treated well (drinks post-game at the Bitter End) etc. For whatever reason Sounders fans turn some small percentage of Timbers fans into absolute morons.

Just as the Quakes turn some Galaxy fans into morons and vice versa. Just as Dodgers turn Giants fans into morons and vice versa. Just as the Yankees turn half the teams in baseball's fans into morons... Certain teams generate certain responses from an immature subset of their rivals fans. It's nothing new and nothing unique to soccer.

And if you head over to the Timbers sub-forum, you can see some of them are morons to everybody period, including their own.

I'm traveling to the Timbers game in Chicago tomorrow and don't expect to be harassed as a visiting fan. God forbid there be a welcoming environment.

    Really? Tell us more...

Are you seriously some sort of nun or monk that has been going to the games, and I have yet to spot you? :p

"his sort of idiocy seems to be reserved solely against Sounders fans"

Jesus tapdancing christ, they are only our archrival for fudge sakes, have you been watching the games on a deserted island by yourself this entire time?

I may even know you personally, I have no clue. But regardless, you're acting like a forum thread lunch lady, and it's really bugging me. Seriously, fan banter is extremely normal in heated rivalries...it happens all the time a la the Civil War football game. Not only that, it's extremely hard to censor, and stop...as long as both fans keep it to a "fun-level"...everything is fine. The Timbers Army does a very good job of self-policing, and keeping the area free of opposition fans in the stadium...that's really all you can ask, we're not a police force, we're a supporters group.

There were no reports of violence from this past derby, and there was a TON of shit-talking. So seriously, stop being a killjoy. I am not saying I support what that guy did, but the fact is, this is a huge derby...if you don't think fans are going to talk shit, then well, you're really going to hate Seattle-Portland games from now on, so get used to it.

    Go Timbers, and ******** Seattle.

And why is it exactly that a group of adults can't stand to have someone wearing a Sounders jersey sit next to them, even in the non-supporters section of the park? My problem isn't with friendly shit talk, it's with the idea that apparently folks can't be expected to control themselves if someone wearing Seattle's laundry were to be within their line of sight. Put it this way, somehow folks in every other major sporting rivalry in this country (Yankees/Red Sox, Packers/Bears, Celtics/Lakers) don't need rules about where they can sit if they're sporting team colors. What makes the Timbers different?

We could use a segregated away supporters section for this one. A Packers fan in Soldier Field can expect to get pelted with popcorn and insults. There will always be several ejections a game.

The only way to avoid this is to stay in your seat and keep quiet. But who wants to do that after buying $100 seats and driving 4 hours? Besides avoiding problems, keeping them separate is more fun for everyone.

Ok guys, back to talking about how much the game did for MLS on the whole. Take it to Rivals

I don't understand this throwball thingies... can we talk MLS now?

I don't mind other teams' fans sitting in the non-SG group, but they better know their place. They're the one who bought tickets to our section so you better follow our rules. And for me there is only one rule, let the pre-teens enjoy the game. It is their fault not buying tickets from the away section.

There are a number of college rivalries that I can think of that should (and generally do) keep away fans in their own section.

You compare us to other sports but we are held to a very different standard by the media. In the long history of those rivalries thousands of incidents have happened and for the most part the media has skipped over it. If some of those same incidents were to happen in our rivalry it would be a media lynching. There would be no more away allocations of 515. There would be no more tickets sold to people with certain zip codes on the open market. It would also have repercussions for MLS and the sport.

As for your "people need to behave themselves and act their age shtick" history has shown otherwise. Humans dont behave themselves and dont act their age all the time and in the REAL world, involving the Timbers vs Sounders, with REAL people all it takes is one moron whether they are TA or ECS or not.

I would spin this the other way - I think any game in any sport that's expected to have a noticeable away presence should have both a visiting fan section and a home-team-fans-only section - it just hasn't happened yet. actual fights between Mets and Phillies fans at CBP might be relatively rare, but you will see thrown beverages and intimidation and insults (this and Dodgers/Giants are better MLB examples then Yankees/Sox for unacceptable behavior, i think.) why not cut down on this by putting the section in place for these games? away fans will have more fun and you'll cut down on incidents. it'd be TV-friendly, too - when the Yankees hit a home run in Fenway, the camera crew can cut over to a group of 400 yankees fans jumping up and celebrating.

i personally would never feel the need to throw a beverage or profanity-laced tirade at someone just because of the jersey they're wearing and neither would most fans, but it does happen a bit, so any simple measure that would cut down on it sounds great to me.

How about ejecting and banning the guy throwing stuff at people? That sounds pretty simple and would get the point across that it won't be tolerated.

PDX tifo was excellent. At first I was a little insulted that it wasn't bigger or more creative, after the huge effort we put in making DoD. But after getting over my little snit about that, I'm glad to say the KoC/QoQ tifo was very well done and executed with style.

I hope this rivalry's tifo raises the bar for all of MLS, not just here in the PNW. MLS has plenty of teams who know how to do tifo and have been doing it for years: I just want to see us doing more of it, and putting it up more often.

Jeld-Wen security and PDX police were excellent. I was surprised to see so much Rave Green sprinkled in with the Timbers crowd. Great plan by Jeld-Wen to pull up a tarp or two for easy re-ticketing/re-location of stray Sounders fans. Few got moved, but kudos to them for making the option so easy to execute. We'd done the same in Seattle on a smaller scale and I think very few were moved.

Timbers fans were great everywhere I went. Civil, yes, friendly, not so much. As it should be. We were the same, plus deferential, as we should be: we're on a business trip, this is your town, you've got the numbers and I'm glad you do. I think it helped that we were almost all consciously on our best behavior. And that, as in May, the vast majority of away fans understood this was not a day to play tourist and mill about the entire neighborhood wearing the invader's colors. It's fair game to politely tell such out-of-place fans they are, in fact, out of place.

We want bigger away-allocations to each other's stadiums, and this year's big hurdle is to prove we can do a derby big-time without hitting the police blotter. So far Seattle and Portland are posting clean sheets; Vancouver gets their turn in a couple months.

Most games at Husky Stadium give the away fans a section of their own int eh horseshoe. For the Apple Cup they also give them the East bleachers.

This is the same at every college football game. This comes from the fact that the away school is given those tickets to sell to their fans. The away fans are still allowed to buy tickets elsewhere in the stadium.

    This.

Of all the Apple Cups at Husky Stadium I have been too, I have only sat in the visitors section once (mostly because the seats are beyond awful).

The student section has pretty good views, but the seats (benches) themselves kind of suck. :D

The only stadium I've been to that's crappier than Husky Stadium is the Coliseum in Oakland, and that's only because you're in actual danger of chunks of concrete falling on your head while you're there. As rundown as RFK is, at least it's a decent venue (and yes, I do remember the whole collapsing section issue from a couple years back - it's still nicer than the Coliseum).

Well, Husky Stadium is getting the track removed later on this year. The renovation (most expensive in NCAA history at $250 million USD) will be completed in 2013. That is why there won't be any grass at Qwest until then at the earliest while the Huskies are sharing with the Sounders and Seahawks.

    Now...
