Tell me about it. This goes way, way back. My favorite debate was Mays-Mantle-Snider. I'm still ready to argue for Mays. The great thing was that all 3 HoF players played the same position, at the same time in the SAME city. Can something like this happen with 2 soccer teams? Hopefully.
Were you at the Progol Tourney at Downing in 95 when the Centaurs played Atletico Nacional ? Around 10K Colombians there .. Must have taken about 3 hrs to get to the bridge after that match.
Nah I went to 2 games , went with some guys from Glasgow who were dying to watch some live footie. I know we saw Seattle..I think the other game was against Atlanta..same thing..packed..but we didn't drive to the stadium..we walked from Astoria..stopping on the bridge for a spliff ..ahhhh the good ole days . Thats where we met all you guys..the NYC firm guys
What about these numbers ? http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/rock-report/2010/07/is-baseball-on-a-road-to-insignificance.html
Good article, but times have changed and effected everything to do with television, not just baseball. As channels have proliferated, viewers have much more choices now than they did in the 80s. I'm sure if you look at ratings for the Tonight Show, or 6 o'clock news programs, or prime time sitcoms, you'd see the same trend.
For sake of getting this thread back on target 1) Do you think the Cosmos will be announced 20? 2) IF so - when? It almost seems perfect for ASG but with recent comments - i still think they might need some time. I do think it is going to happen and an announcement could come by years end.
I think these questions can only be answered after a full discussion about the decline of Arena football and curling and the relative ratings of the Cosby Show v. Modern Family.
1) 20 2) This August, 1st-15th I think that New York is being evaluated with a few other cities. Given that the Cosmos have started development teams we know they will come back. If not the next season, the one after.
How exactly would they make it work? The Mets are in town 81 days a year. How long does it take to convert the field?
Not saying its def going to be at citi - but the Nats/DC United made it work. Remember - MLS starts in March and ends in late October - they can fit 4 home games in at times when the Mets arent even playing (being the Mets wont be a post season team for a while ) However, the Mets are so hungry for money - they will make it work
Didn't the MetroStars import a field on a tray system at one point? Couldn't something like that work as well at Citi? I wouldn't feel so gloomy about the Mets playoff hopes. MLB doesn't really start until August anyway.
The tray system was a complete failure. Why would you put trays of grass over a grass field when all you really need to do is put some sod down on the infield dirt?
I only mentioned that because someone was doubting the grounds crew ability to change fields over quickly. I'm with you, I don't see it as a big deal at all.
Oh yes. If you don't have any plans for your own soccer specific stadium, you don't get in MLS. It's a requirement for candidate teams.
Just like it was a requirement for Seattle? There are plans to build an SSS in NYC. We're talking about announcing a team based on using a temporary venue while shovels are in the ground elsewhere.
Seattle controls revenue. Any team that can have that kind of situation, would get into MLS as well I would think. Those plans have to come public though. Without them, I think the OP is right - MLS will be hesitant. However, I feel pretty good they will get something done. Not 100% as nothing is set in stone but I feel good.
