I just saw it on ESPN twitter stream. To lose Gary and Paul in the same season is tough. According to the first news release, Scholsey is joining the coaching staff. I tried posting it on the Redcafe, but the New Topic link does not seem to be there.
As I said in the thread inquiring about a 'replacement', he's the only midfielder we had who could play football against even the most elite sides pressing to high heaven, if his supporting cast was competent enough. Retiring as the best at the club, even now, in so many facets of the game. I rate him for calling it a day whilst still having something to contribute. His presence was too strong and too brilliant for us to move on with him still being the de facto king of our midfield. I figure the emotions will kick in later on when the video montages start popping up as well as his last video interviews.
Had a feeling this was coming. So long, Scholesy. You will definitely be missed. What an inspirational, irreplaceable player - a true professional, midfield maestro, all class, from the first day until the last.
Just to add: What a coach to have! It's a major coup for the club that he has stayed on in that capacity.
Undoubtedly. It's a shame Edwin hasn't agreed to do the same. For this club, anyway. The next generation of United CMs will be in fine hands...as long as they learn to time their tackles from one of the other coaches.
I have never enjoyed watching any athlete more. My favorite. My little ones will hear stories about the Ginger Prince. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4d1auOz4N8"]YouTube - Manchester United Chant 'Scholes scores goals'[/ame]
What I love the idea of is that absolutely nobody can come in and call the odds on him as a superior player. The authority and aura he'll have in that role will be immense. There isn't a player in midfield who couldn't learn a thing or two from him. Godliness.
Don't know what to say. Thought it would probably happen, but..... I wish him well in his future endeavours.

As a coach for MUFC. I have been checking soccernet every hour dreading seeing this news. When I saw it...
One of a maybe a handful of CM's who could step into their midfield passing game and not miss a beat. Not sure about the pressing/running and tackling, mind..
Paul Scholes aka the best interview in football. As much as I was expecting this, its still a shock. He could easily have played in Italy for another few years. But Paul Scholes is a one club man. So much respect for him for that as well as everything else. So many retired footballers talk about how hard it is to stop playing, and about how they do everything they can to prolong their careers. Not Paul Scholes. For him playing for Manchester United was only thing he ever wanted. He puts the club before himself. We are never going to see the likes of Scholes, Giggs and Neville again. Staying on as a coach eases the pain a bit. That class of Scholes video wrecks havoc with my allergies
Scholes in Barca midfield, now that is one horrible thought, somebody who can score from range to add to his passing abilities. I miss him already, plenty of potentials to work with Scholesy.
To wake up to such news... terrible Yes, it shouldn't have come as a complete shock, but still. My favourite player, someone I've always looked up to, a brilliant man, and I could go on. Thank you for all the years of amazing service, Paul!
You've got me picturing all the young players sitting around in a circle looking up to him with big eyes.
I am in office but i just couldnt stop myself from shedding a tear....I will miss watching him........
Agreed. For a split second when first seeing your post, I did wonder if he might be assertive or forthcoming enough to excel in a coaching role. Then I got to picturing it like I mentioned in the other post, like playschool kids all sitting cross-legged, listening intently to their teacher reading a story and I think he'll do well. He won't need to shout to get their attention.
