Folks, if you want to talk about England possibly leaving FIFA, then please start a thread about it. This one has to do with Qatar and WC 2022.

If you'd like, I can split the England-specific discussion out and use it to start a thread on that topic.

Sure. "England (amongst other countries) could leave FIFA"

edit: Use my earlier post to kick it off.

edit2: I'll start a new thread. Just move all the "Ditching FIFA" posts.

Keeping quiet doesn't gain them anything, so what would be the incentive to be quiet about the fact that you are losing a bunch of money in bribes? Are you implying that if it becomes well known that Qatar bribed people to vote for them their reputation for future bids will be pristine because they didnt say anything?

This is all relevant to the dreadful decisions to award the WC2022 to Qatar.

Not "pristine", no, but it's got to be in their interests to keep denying everything, just in case they can salvage anything in the way of reputation. And even if they ended up confessing to some bribery it would only be in proven cases, so that they looked like they were coming clean. Probably they'd blame it on certain unscrupulous representatives who they would scapegoat (I'm guessing).

Any other cases they could keep quiet about, I'm sure they would. They'd gain nothing by announcing them.

Compare the Fifa committee members who have already been suspended, they're not confessing to anything. By appealing the decisions all the way they are maximising any doubt that they were guilty.

The last Qatar thread we ran got completely out of hand. This one is being enforced under a more limiting set of parameters. A discussion of England's intent to stay in FIFA or leave it does not fall within those parameters.

As I said, it's a perfectly legitimate topic for another thread.

I agree... in fact, when I first replied to this topic, it was a separate topic... I guess another moderator felt it needed to be joined to the Qatar 2022: News and Analysis Only! topic, which is a completely different story; England were not even bidding for 2022.

So Qatar bribed FIFA and they get a WC, and U.S. where asked to change MLS structure and they refused, so now U.S. will never get to host a W.C. again.

    So who's the winner?

Blatter is the loser because he never said anything about the MLS playing during the FIFA calender when an agreement was made so that the US would host the '94 WC in exchange start a pro soccer league.

How is he a loser when he will cap expansion at 20? and if Gulati doesn't agree FIFA could desanction USSF and then what will happen?

What makes you think he will cap expansion? Remember FIFA allowed MLS to change the rules to suit american tastes.

FIFA also intervened in the 1930's and it sent the game backwards for decades. Doing it again would have the same repercussions.

The truth is FIFA need the TV money coming from the US to be much larger. If they were smart, they wont make the same mistake again.

FIFA will only ever sanction if their is clear government interference.

FIFA might not be happy but what could they do? Nothing, except behind closed doors just make sure the US doesn't get any hosting rights for any tournaments.

FIFA need the US more than the other way.

Why do people keep saying this? He has no power to cap club numbers. He tried to get through the 18 team leagues rule a few years back and the EPL basically told him to get lost and Serie A actually expanded from 18 to 20 the year after. The English lower leagues (the championship contains many internationals) still have 24 teams in each league. This is one of these strange BS rumours that has morphed into a fact when it's no such thing.

There is no limit on club sides per league, Blatter floated the idea, got shot down and that was that. It also had no bearing upon the USA bid for 2022 considering Blatter actually voted for the USA after South Korea was knocked out of the bidding.

Well, actually, if you look over in Asia, the AFC have given requirements that need to be met if leagues want to take part in continental competition. These requirements are the number of clubs that must be in the league.

Whereas in Europe and America leagues are overbooked, in Asia they are under run! But like you said, they don't have any bearing on anything FIFA does.

There are so many things that MLS does different that FIFA could make issue about a half dozen things. But they won't because the differences make sense! Canada and the United States have logistical issues completely different from other countries so this should not be cause for grief.

World Cup whistleblower to give evidence

The whistleblower at the centre of World Cup bid bribery allegations has agreed to come to FIFA to give evidence in person, Sepp Blatter said today
The person, who had worked for the Qatar 2022 bid organisation, alleged that FIFA members Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma were paid $US 1.5million each to vote for the Middle East state's World Cup bid, according to evidence given to a Parliamentary committee by the Sunday Times. The pair deny the claims.
Now Blatter, the FIFA president, has said that the newspaper has agreed to bring the whistleblower to Zurich to testify in person.
Speaking in an interview with reporters at FIFA headquarters, Blatter said: "We are anxiously awaiting for these evidences or non-evidences in order that we can take the adequate steps.
"The newspaper has agreed that we will bring this whistleblower here to Zurich and then we will have an investigation of this."

    Also worth noting..

"The whole procedure cannot be done in 11 days but before 11 days we must know whether the allegations are true or not true - or unproven. If they are not true this case is over.
"The ethics committee is already alerted and alarmed - they are not just lying on the beach - and the members will come for the Congress and can convene at very short notice."
Blatter refused to be drawn on whether FIFA would organise a re-vote of the 2022 World Cup bid if the allegations are proven.
He added: "This is an idea circulating already around the world which is alarming. Don't ask me yes or no, let us go step by step."

So the whistleblower is going to whistleblow on himself?

Yet the identity of the whistleblower is unknown so could in fact be anyone Blatter has paid off to get in a dig at MBH. Oh, and what a surprise, a FIFA President's election is just around the corner.

FIFA will just have to have a re-do for 2022 if the whistleblower is credible.

This is what I said they should do, and everyone practically yelled at me saying why, whats the point!!

But all this generally shows is, why didn't they put someone forward themselves? Fair enough they are making there point that they don't want Sepp or MBH in charge, but what are they doing about it? Nothing.

That would be great news for the Ex-Co members, another bidding day earlier than expected. They don't have to worry about staying in power for the 2026 vote, they can just re-run '22 over and over again.

But this will never happen. For example, if the US got the vote in a re-run, then who's to say that someone else won't complain or make allegations?

The best FIFA could do is ban everyone that is found guilty for life. Maybe thats all the Qatari Organising Commitee, but the cup must stay there and be organised by someone else, probably FIFA themselves.
