There wasn`t a re-vote in something much more important than world cup football host election, as the elections for the presidency of the USA in 2000 (Bush-Gore), after the countings scandal of Florida, which were pretty much evident back then.

Don`t expect that FIFA will do it, only on the grounds on the suspicious atitudes by some ex-com members, specially if all what is said about them is done by those who lost, with no proven facts that there was any corruption involved here.

As for FIFA, the whole process was clean, and to them no change will be done in regards to the past elections of hosts for the 2018 and 2022 WC, granted to Russia and Qatar, respectively.

The allegations are such that they should at least be investigated. And not by FIFA's joke of an "ethics committee", but by an impartial body. There's a lot of smoke around these bids, and it behooves FIFA to see whether there's any associated fire.

After a previous FIFA bribery scandal, Swiss law was modified to make the taking of bribes illegal. So if these allegations are true, then something illegal may well have happened.

I certainly believe those Olympics shouldn't have been hosted in SLC.

Nothing will happen because the corruption goes all the way to the top of FIFA. Who's gonna take any action ? Action would have to come from the national federations themselves (non-corrupt ones if there are any). Most fans don't really give a shit ... nobody will boycott the WC. So in the end, business as usual.

What laws is Fifa even subject to? The only accountability they have is t Swiss courts as far as I understand. And in Switzerland, until recently, bribery wasn't illegal. Just saying.

Qatar ‘paid millions’ in World Cup bribes

Six FIFA officials were prepared to sell their votes for up to $1.5m each to push through Qatar’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup, according to new revelations disclosed Tuesday.
Evidence presented to a British House of Commons’ inquiry reported claims of corruption behind Qatar’s surprise win in hosting the 2022 tournament, including a network of bribery that implicated senior FIFA officials.

I don't really remember much about the corruption back in 1998. I was too busy chasing tail in college. But, I'm not really sure what the SLC Olympics have to do with this discussion, other than an attempt by you to change the subject from the 2022 WC and to throw in your typical bigotry against the US.

The point of the SLC discussion is that the US Dept. of Justice, the IOC, USOC and SLOC actually investigated what went on and held those people accountable. These people were acquitted in a court of law but they all were fired or resigned and the procedures for future Olympics were changed. I think that is what most people would like to see.

Note, what drove the SLOC heads to do the bribes for 2002 was their belief that bribes had been paid by Nagano officials to IOC member to secure the 1998 winter Olympics. In 2006, Nagano's governor came out with a report that their city had in fact paid those bribes ("excessive hospitality") to secure the Olympics.

By actually investigating the allegations, FIFA might be able to prevent this from happening again in the future. However, without the governments of certain UEFA countries (or the EU) and/or the US getting involved, I don't believe that will happen.

I doubt anything will change because IF it is true and FIFA DOES actually make changes based on Qatar bribing then Qatar would get nothing for the bribes already paid. If Qatar doesn't get anything for the bribes already paid I would expect they would sing like a songbird and gives names and other specifics. This would be very embarrassing to FIFA and also fuel those that are unhappy with FIFA.

Qatar's bribes will be as deep under the rug as FIFA can sweep them.

Why would they do that? What would they gain?

 The question you should be asking is why wouldn't they do that?

If you got caught in something incriminating, wouldn't you take those who turned on you down with you? Why wouldn't Qatar take down the old sleezebags in FIFA with them if something went down?

If they ain't scott free, no one's scott free.

More to the point...what would they lose? If FIFA hangs them out to dry over this do you expect them to go quietly without a peep? Should they expect FIFA to treat them kindly if they do not expose everyone in 'the scandal'? No, FIFA's best bet is to do nothing to Qatar and control any damage from that aspect.

    Blatter v Bin Hammam

Interesting election. So we have the long time overseer of corruption against the fresher face who will promise to clean up FIFA.

If elected, Bin Hammam will expose the corrupt forces in FIFA, including the Qatari bid process.

    Can't wait.

And he will look the other way so his country doesn't lose the '22 WC.

Binman will NOT investigate Qatars bid.

There is simply too much money at stake for that tiny nation.$50 billion in infrastructure on the back of hosting rights alone.

Bladder is terrible, but he never supported the Qatar bid at the vote and was horrified that they got the votes

If Qatar had run an honourable bid then I would have been happy for Binman to become Prez but he's been involved in too many dodgy deals.

A vote for Binman legitimises the way that Qatar do business-surely he can't be rewarded for such a brazen program of bribery and corruption

A fair point- despite my loathing of Blatter, Warner and Blazer as human beings, the three of them were not in favor of Qatar hosting the 2022 WC.

Wonder what Blatter's long-term moves are going to be. He doesn't care about the corruption, but it might give him an opportunity to "fix" the results of the 2022 WC vote to a location that is more to his liking.

From a political point of view the investigation will get some traction so that Blatter can discredit Bin Hammam. I doubt that it will bring about real change since the crooks that took money will also vote in the presidential election. In a related note has anyone noticed that CONMEBOL is now giving full backing to Blatter? Bin Hammam is no doubt furious.

I'll post what I posted in another section of the Big Soccer forum about the current situation:

"The election is going to be interesting. If bin Hammam wins, he'll keep his mouth shut. If bin Hammam loses, he'll start naming names and then might get stripped of the '22 WC."

The way it looks right now, he'll be naming names in no time.

    Interesting.
I would think that the AFC would be fractured in its support of Binman as well after he knifed the East

I think if Bladder told the full executive that they could have a new vote on Q2022 he would romp it

  22. Federations stepping away from FIFA?

    http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=reu-fifaqatar

I'll vote for that. FIFA is a ridiculously bloated and corrupt organization that is beyond reproach or any kind of auditing. You can see the results in the way the World Cup played out in 2010... Plenty of controversial, questionable officiating and lots of unsold tickets. Then they give us Quatar? What a joke...

Re: Federations stepping away from FIFA?

I brought up this thought on ESPN's articles AFTER Qatar was chosen for the '22 WC that maybe countries will start breaking away from FIFA. Maybe people will actually take this into consideration.

However, you have to think about WHICH countries will leave and WHICH countries they will be joining and WHAT those countries will do next. But I do expect there will be some countries that would want to leave their respective confederations.

Re: Federations stepping away from FIFA?

According to an article in The Guardian www.guardian.co.uk the European Union is putting the corruption in fifa question high on their agenda....be interesting to see what Blatter and his crooks do about their "no government interference" in fifa seeing as how there are 27 member countries in the EU....
