I think I'd possibly put Platini ahead of Zico in shooting, but I feel Zico ahead of Platini in speed from my impression (probably close though as I know Zico wasn't quick for a great player). In terms of strength, I'd feel Zico last actually if talking about resisting challenges etc - Platini wasn't big but he was taller while Maradona was more robust and a powerful runner so probably he would be number 1 in that category. I agree with all the others and creativity is certainly a category they all score very high in - maybe Zico would be ahead of the other two if I had to call it.
Overall, I'd have to say 1) Maradona, 2) Platini, 3) Zico though Zico is probably my favourite to watch of the 3 of them, probably because of his inventiveness. I'm not saying Platini is a better goalscorer than Zico but apart from free-kicks (Zico was even better) he may be ahead in shooting. I think Platini could dribble pretty well at times myself but Zico would edge that one indeed because he was great at twisting and turning or using great ball control in tight spaces then dropping his shoulder and gliding past players (he didn't go on long surging or mazy dribbles though from his own half very much from what I've seen). Maradona, partly because of his pace but not solely has to be ahead on dribbling by the biggest winning margin in any category.
Actually in terms of control I think it's also close between all 3. If I had to put a number 2 for passing I'd probably choose Zico, and for heading maybe Maradona but not sure.

Shooting: Zico, Maradona, Platini (Zico's goal stats and shooting stats spoke for himself)
Strength: Maradona, Platini , Zico (Zico was the weakest athlete of all)
Creativity: Maradona, Zico, Platini (Zico was best close to the box, but M10 was better in overall even in midifeld control)
Passing: Maradona, Platini = Zico (Maradona slightly more complete overall from short, assists, thruball long pass and crossing) Platini was better than Zico in long pass and crossing, while Zico was betetr in thruball and direct assist so they were equal)
    Heading: Maradona, Platini, Zico

To be honest I think all 3 are equal in passing ability.

I agree with him. Diego's creativity was breathtaking. Probably the most creative footballer in the history of the game alongside Cruyff. His passing too is second to none. But coincidentally, the other two (Zico and Platini) are also among the 5 or 10 greatest passers of all times (only competitive comparison to these three in passing is probably only Didi).

    Indeed ...
There is NO COINCIDENCE that Maradona was regarded as head and shoulder with Pele and ... ON TOP of everyone ...

In my opinion maradona in passing comes ahead of both simply because he is #1 ever in my opinion in that category he had ultra-vision in the field and was very versatile (long-short-one two-through, you name it) whereas maybe platini was better in long passes and zico in through balls as james said

what I would like to know is who people rate the #2, zico or platini?
i usually think that south americans put zico ahed whereas europeans put platini ahead. I would like to know why whomever you rate the #2 is better?

Call me biased or not but strictly in term of talent and skills as an attacking midfielder/playmaker: Zico is #2 behind Maradona -

Zico was betetr in dribble, 1&2 or 1on1, slightly better in shooting as well

However in reality: Most people in Europe (or around the world) put Platini ahead of Zico, for he was great with Juve in UEFA CL, aqnd especially his memorable performance at Euro84 whereas, Zico spent most of his career in Brazil and he was a underated with only 1 great season in SerieA, plus his short at WC82. That's understandable and reasonable to "rank" Platini ahead of Zico,

In europe yes I think zico is not seen as an equal to platini or even known to regular fans today, but world no.Because in asia or africa you see many football jerseys and shops have zico written on them, and he had a huge impact on japanese football.

On the other hand him playing in brazil doesn't make him less of a player, i think in the 80s the brasileiro wasn't lagging behind the serie a, and he dominated south america and was a protagonist to the glory years of the most supported club in brazil.

If this is about the 80s, Valderrama deserves mention for passing and control under pressure. At the very least he was on par with Platini and Zico with goal creating ability.

Disagree. Vanderama was excellent in passing andcould very well be in TOP10 best passers all time, but that does NOT mean he was "ON PART" with Zico/Platini who did that days in days out over >10yrs . Vanderama was great in some bst years (equally) but not equal over the whole career per se!

Just with passing and goal creation, overall no. He also never played for any major teams, and his national team (Colombia) hugely underachieved in the 80s and 90s.

They are both top 20 all time, but I think the difference that makes Platini more highly regarded (usually placed in the top 10), is his performance in Euro84. Zico didn't have this kind of dominating international performance, although in my opinion his success with Flamengo was higher than Platini's with Juventus.

Well, in fact he did have a great WC82 until Rossi's hat trick stole his show!

4goals+4ass/5games WC82 testified of his greatness there ... it was just Brazil (as whole team collapsed before quater) could not dilute Zico's performance. Like Eusebio in 66, Cruyff in 74, Fontaine Kopa in 58 Muller at 70 ... they were great but most often forgotten for not having won the WC!

Platini's performance in that WC was just as good, or almost as good, but in 86 Platini played great, as did Zico but he didn't start on every match due to an injury. So overall WC82 + WC86 it's about even between them, Zico's success with Flamengo was slightly greater than Platini's with Juventus (Flamengo destroyed Liverpool in a memorable match, while Juventus won controversially in a tragic match). The difference is Euro84, where Platini gave a performance for the ages, Zico doesn't have a dominating Copa America (or two) to equal that feat.

I admit I exaggerated, Zico was a better player than Zidane, Laudrup and many others, but Maradona was another level for me, is my opinion.

With Platini instead is at the same level.

    For me
    1)Maradona
    2)Platini or Zico
