Hello there, Recent soccer convert who's been reading up on the history of the game. Was wondering what followers thought about Mexico's performance relative to the big boys in CONEMBOL on the world stage. El Tri seem good but overshadowed compared to Brazil and Argentina (and I guess Uruguay). It seems as if they underachieve. FMF seems relatively well orchestrated (can't be the basketcase that the CBF is). Mexico has decent money relative to rest of Latin America and there is high passion and talent for the game just like Argentina and Brazil. Why hasn't El Tri hasn't equaled the same success, is it money, infrastructure, manpower?
I would say we have many different problems. Included is the mentality Mexicans have about most things not just football (and I'll probably catch some flak for this) along with corruption amongst the powers that be. I suppose genetics play a role as well, but not as much as some would like us to think. Where are you from that you just recently converted to the most beautiful sport in the world?
...or maybe we just don't have near as many talented players as the futbol world powers do. Sure our federation is crooked and prioritizes money over anything else, but at the end of the day you need talent to win something of important.
I'm a Yankee who got caught up in the world cup and found that this round ball game is interesting enough to tide me over until the pigskin rolls out in the fall (can't deal with the baseball). I was reading Soccernomics and it provided a lot of food for thought on performances of National teams and leagues. It just surprised me about Mexico's performance seeing as how they have a decent amount of money and a strong league full of talented homegrown players. Arguably, the league as a whole is stronger than Brazil (badly administered) or Argentina (It's River and Plate...............and friends). In fact, isn't Mexico importing players now? I've seen some people of color on America's roster. That shows that you have to have a decent amount of dough to attract internationals.
Dont you need $$ to join club soccer in mexico?fees, Gear. Cleats, clothes, etc. If you have $ u can join a club. So I would suppose the talent pool dramatically decreases. Cus the poor talented aren't given a chance.
i'll answer this part, since you don't seem to be a troll... as far as the league being strong, it is one of the strongest in this side of the atlantic, but the two i wouldn't argue it is better than are the two you mentioned. both have a lot of talent and export it as well - too much so to just be overlooked. as for callign argentina river and playe (you mean river and boca) and friends, you would be doing a huge disservice to the top 3 finishers in the past 4 tournaments, because neither included boca nor river . they both have had dominant streaks, but you're overlooking teams that have played well lately like estudiantes, lanus and velez. historically, the two best clubs are river and boca, but the argentine league is no scottish premier league mexico importing players is nothing new, mexico exporting players the way it has lately is though. anyway, going back to the importing, there is a rule against too many foreigners, and most teams are somewhere around the limit, and most of the top scorers in the league are foreigners (the all time leading scorer is brazilian) regarding foreigners, some say there's too many, or too many bad ones, or too many lazy ones just collecting a check, but that's part of the can of worms you opened that i don't want to deal with . partially also because you reopened a slew of arguments and subjects that have been beaten to death.
I think this has got to do because it's a cycle. The FMF is just trying to make money and they do, but it costs us not improving. How can we measure our improvements if we continuously play in the U.S. to crappy teams? or how can we improve period? The teams we play know us and we know them. We need to be playing elsewhere to different teams so they expose our weak points and so we can learn tactics to use against strong opponents. As for the league, I think a lot just care about making money and winning titles as well. Because of this, they just get already known talent and don't risk on giving the younger a chance. They don't scout as much and such. I wish we had some youth system so we can better prepare them and export the cream of the crop.
There are a lot of reasons for this, but like guado said, this has been discussed to death But in short, Mexico is light years behind Brazil/Arg/Uru in youth development
Yeah, but we play friendlies with the same teams all the time at the same locations. I'd like more variety and have more European teams play us in Europe. Just staying here is our comfort zone and that's not going to help us get better. As for Copa America, it's not like it's played yearly and this year there was a restriction on what players we could send (U-22), which maybe is good since it'll force us to look at younger players.
I feel sometimes the Selection process for our NT is dubious (in my opinion) and it seems like friend of friends and family get call ups, and of course there are those callups that just leave us scratching our heads but I think also another contributing factor is we dont allow a head coach to fully coach a cycle, get their system in place and working well
