A roadtrip to Montreal was already going to be an awesome experience, but with this stadium it is going to be unbelievable.
“The Saputo Stadium was already beautiful, but now it will be magnificent,” declared Richard Legendre, executive vice president of the Montreal Impact and Saputo Stadium. I'm sure there's a number of people like Bill Archer who would beg to differ, but in any case they better gets their butts in gear if they don't want to play the whole first half of the 2012 season on the road. A year is not a very long time when it comes to stadium building.
Why not? Its traditional in MLS to not have stadiums ready for First Kick. I think the Dick is still the only SSS to open on Opening Day of the season.
RBA. But they're adding 7,000 seats to the existing stadium and other amenities like the roof. I wouldn't think there would be much of an issue in completing that by opening day next season.
Right, for some reason I was thinking that they opened for a game in 2009 but I must have been confusing it with something else.
it was scheduled to open near the end of 2009, but with delays adding up, RBA just said "f-ck it, we'll do it live (in 2010)" /probably a good decision, especially considering the disaster that 2009 turned out to be.
Are there really that many trees around the stadium? It looks pretty awesome. Grats Montrealites. Also, you guys should probably make it, like, three times bigger.
great another DICK , PIZZA , HOME DEPOT, Future SJ , future Houston, LIVESTRONG,BMO field looking stadium, is it just me or is this the same crappy architect that has made the same crappy design for all the stadiums i just mentioned, i mean fine if your gonna make them small atleast do something different than the same shoebox design...
Seriously?!? Sigh ...BigSoccer's Architecture critics strike again. Paging Mr. Warmth.... Let me start ....Not to crap on BMO Field or Pizza Hut Park but neither of those venues look nothing like Red Bull Arena, Livestrong Sporting Park, the new Dynamo Stadium, or renovated Stade Saputo. Does PGE Park fit the same shoebox design in your opinion?!? MLS venue have come along way. Cheers to the folks in Montreal (preferably with a La Fin Du Monde) ...your new home looks great!
And does it really matter what these stadiums look like? They serve a purpose, and that purpose is to make a profit for the team so that this league can continue on and and continue to grow. And another thing... if you think this new design for Montreal (or the design for RBA or Liverstrong) looks like PHP, the HDC, or BMO you need to get your eyes checked. And to your "shoebox" comment... WHAT DO YOU WANT??? The dimensions of a soccer field tend to limit what one can do with the shape of a stadium.
Thanks for throwing these "before" pics in for comparison. Yes, this renovation looks like it will work fine. 20K is a nice number, and those corners could still be filled in some day for more seats, or the whole old stand replaced like they do in England. OR, is that open corner space the mandated "unobstructed view" from the Olympic Village to the big Stadium? Let me be the first to say that, once again, if the TFC joint had a roof like this it would make it so much cooler looking, seeing how the basic stand design seems similar. One day, after it has been expanded to 30K perhaps? Also, the one overhead shot reminds me of how the new San Jose digs will suffer IMHO from having a big empty instead of at least some small stand for the ultras in that one end. BUT, just get it built and that will be great anyway. Someone will soon throw up the pictures to show that the MLS stadiums present and future will have plenty of variety.
Stade Saputo's end sections would be (at least partially) covered, which is not the norm for MLS stadiums. And I love the three-quarters wrap-around seating/roof, where two of the corners are filled in, which is also not the norm for MLS stadiums. I don't know how one could accuse this one of being cookie-cutter. It gives me a different look from most of the other stadiums, and I love it. If the drawings are accurate, it's going to be my 3rd favorite stadium behind Red Bull Arena and Livestrong Sporting Park.
The gap between the main stand and the three others is mandated because of the park's architectural integrity: the lane at the bottom of the pic below runs from the tower to the athlete's village (the pyramids in the back).
Why are they still using "Montreal 2012" to refer to themselves. They know and have said they'd be the Impact, previously. We all now they're going to be the Impact. Why the beating around the bush...
How is future SJ like alot of those stadiums you list. Not to mention how is this revamped Saputo Stadium or Livestrong like the others you list? Have your eyes checked my friend.
I remember reading somewhere it has to do with wanting to wait for the launch of their new logo and kit since they are still in NASL as the Impact. They don't want to confuse the issue between the NASL Impact and MLS Impact. I believe the announcement is supposed to be in May or June for the logo and kit.
I find it amazing that this stadium will cost only $40 million total including the upgrade. ($17 million originally and $23 million for the renovation)
Pizza Hut Park BMO Livestrong Sporting Park These are just a few of the examples listed as being the same (along with the Saputo Images). Exactly how are these the same other than that they are stadiums and soccer is played there?
